To hate alloy wheels and think they’re pointless?

Do they actually serve any purpose except sitting on the bits of your car most likely to get scuffed (ie the bit that actually moves at high speed and is nearest the road), being all shiny and vulnerable and attention-seeking?

I clipped a kerb today and managed to take a chunk out of almost every spoke on my front passenger wheel. I had to brake and swerve as an oncoming driver came over onto my side of the road while dangerously overtaking a cyclist.

The wheel now looks awful - I only got the car a few months ago and it’s the first ‘naice’ one I’ve had that’s not an old banger. I don’t actually care about the wheels themselves (the alloys didn’t factor into me choosing the car at all) but I know it will annoy me every time I look at it😫.

DH is obsessive about his wheels and agonises over every tiny scrape, but I really can’t be arsed. It makes me long for my old 1980s polo with plastic hubcaps!

They’re wheels.

TheTruthAboutLove · 24/01/2020 20:32

There are some lovely alloys out there, and I do admire them from afar. But as someone who has a semi-expensive car with alloys I feel under pressure to keep them scratch free and long for the day’s that I could go to Halfords and buy a new set of wheel trims!

Dreamersandwishers · 24/01/2020 20:33

They are lighter and so help fuel economy; they may be easier on your brakes. Oh and they don’t have covers to lose or get knicked.
They don’t cost that much to fix. Check out a local ‘non-brand’ specialist, stay away from dealers.

They ARE pointless, coz they are round.

I'm here all week................

If it's just the one thats knackered you can get them refurbished for less than the cost of 4 aftermarket ones, especially if the tyre is in good nick.

I got one done a few months ago for less than £100, which is expensive as far as a refurb goes, but the colour match was really good.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 24/01/2020 20:40

They’re not something I’d be passionate about, but wheel covers/ hub caps look proper shit.

I wouldn’t spend £££ on them but only very basic cars come with wheel covers now don’t they? Even DH’s Dacia has alloys!

MindatWork · 24/01/2020 20:52

I’m mostly annoyed as the wheels were pristine when I got the car. I don’t even know if it’s worth paying to get it restored as I’ll probably scuff it on a car park barrier next month Wink

I know they look nicer than hubcaps but I think it’s the very idea of making such a functional - and easily scuffable - part of your car look fancy but also gets scratched if you so much as breathe on it is what’s annoying me most (I know probably am BU)

I'm looking at buying a new car at the mo and the salesmen (and brochures) keep making a big thing about alloy wheels. I don't even know what they are!

They just look like wheels to me, what's there to get excited about?

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 24/01/2020 20:58

I can drive properly so mine are as good as new.

If you are a driver that hits the curb/car park barrier etc a lot, they probably aren’t great for you tbh

Careful......... you are tempting fate!!

And FYI, it's KERB, not curb (when referring to the pavement!) Wink

I have ridiculous dickhead boy-racer alloys and I love them. I painstakingly park my car to avoid stuffing them.

I let an ex-friend drive my car once and she fucking scraped the kerb on the passenger side; the rims have a lot of flat space so I really notice it and hate her whenever I think about it.

Rubyupbeat · 24/01/2020 23:20

A car looks crap without them, well, ok, a decent car looks crap without them!
