So, say I have 20 cards in a pack.

I pick one. It's the Ace of Diamonds let's say for argument's sake.

I then pick another one out of the same pack of 20 cards the following day.

Am I correct in saying that the odds of me picking the same card is a multiple of the single odds?

So 1/20 x 1/20 = 1/400

?

Because I've someone telling me the odds are still 1/20 that I'll pull the same card.

I can only imagine you’re being so ridiculous because you want the thread deleted, probably because you’re realised you’re wrong here and you’re embarrassed.

That’s pretty pathetic.

Fainne · 24/01/2020 01:52

Is Maths just not taught over here or something?

Ok, convince me that the probability of two dice showing matching numbers is 1/36^5.

OhTheManatee · 24/01/2020 01:54

When's the poker game? I'm looking forward to winning the pot with a pair of twos!

PyongyangKipperbang · 24/01/2020 01:54

What are the odds of someone asking a seemingly simply kids homework question on AIBU, and turning out to be a goady cunt?

Fainne · 24/01/2020 01:55

This is pretty basic probability here - not proving theorems and shit.

To think that bar a few, most of you haven't a pig's arse clue of what you're talking about, is embarrassing for you.

PurpleDaisies · 24/01/2020 01:55

Don’t you mean any two matching cards OhTheManatee? Wink

1/1

Poker game - my gaff - ALL are invited.

Can't be a troll. Who would knowingly post that 1/36^5 was the probability of matching six-sided dice?

I say genuone rote-memorisation of math techniques with no understanding of how they worked.

PurpleDaisies · 24/01/2020 01:57

Worryingly, I don’t think this is a troll.

This is someone who would rather cling to “I’m right” then look at some sideways numbers showing they aren’t,

Spamantha · 24/01/2020 01:58

Its absolutely clearly a troll, but quite a good one so fair play.

You're all welcome to come to my gaff for a game of poker. £100 quid in. No, that doesn't mean you get to leave with your £100.

I’d forgotten how much I love a good maths argument. Should have gone to bed ages ago. Probability of not being grumpy in the morning 1/20.

EBearhug · 24/01/2020 02:02

Who on earth would want to play with such a rude host?

PotholeParadise · 24/01/2020 02:02

I once had an argument like this with an American teenager who was insistent that we needed to invent methods to calculate Improbability, which was totally different from calculating Probability.

No consensus was reached, I'm afraid. He was convinced he was right, because he refused to read our posts or look at our links, and we knew we were right because we were well beyond 8th grade, thus the links. Grin

Am I correct in thinking you don't do Maths after GCSE unless you choose it as a subject? So most of you only have GCSE level Maths?

OP posts:
PurpleDaisies · 24/01/2020 02:05

What’s your highest level maths qualification? I am ready to be wowed.

PotholeParadise · 24/01/2020 02:06

Right.

Fainne

How many ways are there of throwing two dice so that you get the same number of pips on each one?

Fainne · 24/01/2020 02:06

Higher Level Maths in Leaving Cert.

I think the problem is that sometimes you're asking the question as a possible future scenario, sometimes a past scenario and sometimes a halfway through scenario. See below:

What are the chances of me getting the same card twice = 1/400 (because there are 400 possible outcomes)

I pulled the same card twice, what were the chances of that = 1/400 (because there were 400 possible outcomes)

I just pulled this card. What are the chances of it pulling it again = 1/20 (because there are now only 20 possible outcomes as the first card is already determined)

Fainne · 24/01/2020 02:07

How many dice will it take me to throw at you to make you go away?

Who the hell is "you"? British population as a whole? Mumnet? People up after 2am on a weekend?

P.S. No, I don't only have GCSE Maths.

Fainne · 24/01/2020 02:09

@SleepWarrior Clearly the final scenario assumed the card had been put back in. Otherwise I'd know that the odds were zero. Don't be obtuse.
