Not AIBU. DIY Will?

This isn’t an AIBU, but I didn’t really know where to put it! How simple are those DIY Wills really? The kind you get from WHSmiths? I need to do one just in case as I’m a Single Mum and want to make sure everything is in order.

@mumblechum0 is usually the MN go to will expert if she's around?

As a lawyer (though not a wills and probate lawyer), I think they’re fine as long as you don’t want to do anything remotely complicated with your estate. If it’s a case of appoint guardians and divide the estate equally between your kids, a DIY kit is ok. Anything more complicated than that, use a proper solicitor.

If you do go DIY, follow the instructions for executing it very carefully or it won’t be valid.

If you have home legal assistance on your home insurance most come with a free will checked by a lawyer.

As PP have said, if your affairs are straightforward then just follow the instructions to the letter and it’ll be absolutely fine.

If you have more complicated arrangements, you need an expert.

Thanks everyone, very straightforward, just appointing guardians and leaving money to my DS and parents in the event of some horrible accident.
