DD is 11. She's just been shopping with a friend and her mum for a party they're going to tomorrow night. The party is the 13 year old cousin of said friend and lives in a flash house, lots of money etc.

Anyway, she's come back with a pair of, what can only be described as spray on black jeans and a top that barely comes passed her tummy. WTF was this mother thinking! Sadly, she came in all full of it and excited and I could not hide my disappointment when she put it on to show me. I did refrain from using that line 'You're not going out looking like that!'
The mother also told both of them, that they had to go to this party dressed up to the nines to 'bag a rich boy!'

Much stropping and sulking later I have managed to convince her that we will go out AGAIN tonight to find something more suitable.

Soooo, AIBU in thinking that 11 years olds should look like 11 year olds and not slappers?

Thanks Lewis, I was beginning to think, that at the tender age of 39, I was turning into my mother! (DON'T say a word Kbear!)

Think you were absolutely right - we are all a long time grown up. Thats what mums are for - and if she doesnt thank you now, she will when she is a mum

I've heard tonight from DD, that she picked up a size 8 jeans whilst her friend picked up 10. Her mum, looked quite shocked and told her dd that she could fit an 8 too! Now, where have I heard that before, Kbear!

Tell your DD from me that she always looks cool in a relaxed funky kind of way. Looking like she's tried too hard will put people off talking to her at parties and she suits a casual look so much better.

It's agonising watching them grow up (and I'm right behind you with my DD). Trouble is it's not until you're older that you realise what a wally you looked trying so hard to look older.

Hope she has a nice time anyway.

Can't even go there.

"slutty" "body hugging" FFS geta a grip.
I don't think 11 year old are tarts in skinney black jeans?

MML, where has this thread gone?

Others get a grip, these are young girls following fashion. Did we wear rah rah skirts at that age to show off our nickers? NO! it was fashion FFS ! OK I am old!

My daugter has black skinney jeans so shoot me! They look fine,

I've read this from first post - as if new. On one hand Mum of other friend probably thinks she's cool and hip, but yes you are so right to define a boundary. All my good gut responses have come from the heart and family, and morales - yes those dear old fashioned things - because children whose parents don't have boundaries and limits are the ones who end up in court and drug addicts- just my imo, but it is good to say child hood is special - enjoy, don't rush to be a grown up and yes the sickos look for children dressed as adults - stay strong and calm- plenty of time to be adult - enjoy this time - let the others make mistakes - by saying this often none will. just imo

Did we wear rah rah skirts at that age to show off our nickers?
err i used to wear rah rah skirts at that age but never short enough that i would show my knickers because even 20+ yrs ago my parents were aware that an 11yr old should be dressing like an 11yr old

onlyWotz · 30/08/2007 23:35

It's is our views as adults of what is respectable for this age as to and what is fashion or sexy. Most pre-teens have no idea of what is sexy. My 11 year old likes to be comfortable and would not see slim cut jeans as sexy - just cool !

onlyWotz · 30/08/2007 23:37

smeeinit and ?

I think seeing your 11 year old dressed like a 16 year old is going to make you feel uncomfortable. Following fashion is fine to a point and the fashion of leggings and long tops is great for young girls but a skimpy strappy top with spray on jeans is best left to the 16 years (my 16 year old nieces can carry off this look for parties - they have more maturity to go with it). Seeing a pretty blonde girl dressed up to the nines is not nice. It looks desperate and attention seeking - things you should not be at 11.

Just my humble opinion.
