Obviously not if you're going to deep fry everything but we know that. A standard family menu at home.

A grab and go breakfast of cereal, porridge, toast, eggs or fruit and yogurt will be no more than 400 calories.

A sandwich lunch will be about 4/500 calories

A home cooked dinner based around lean protein, some carbs and veg will be about 500 provided you go easy on the oil and butter . Even an M&S beef lasagne is only 620

So, 3 meals a day = 1500 calories max. We don't need special products or cookery books.

We do need to stop with all the junk we eat and drink between meals. But we have to do that whether we foĺlow a diet book or buy diet products or not.

Unless you are eating like that under medical advice they are very meagre portions and you would need to be very sedatory to require such a low number of cals. Of course you can way healthy but eating normal meals but that would probably be 400 breakfast, 500ish lunch and 800 dinner and 100 snack. Meticulously studying menus if a sign of other issues x

veryvery · 18/01/2020 19:05

Pjs Sigh!

Pjsandbaileys · 18/01/2020 19:09

Ha that doesn't make much sense but you get my drift I hope.

Pjsandbaileys · 18/01/2020 19:12

You are on a weight loss diet which is bit of a drip feed, on a normal weight sustaining "diet" I think most people would find eating those kind of portions difficult and a bit joyless if I'm honest.

EllieQ · 18/01/2020 19:12

I’m really surprised that people are saying the photo veryvery posted is a tiny portion - that looks normal to me! Though I would have more carbs and less vegetables.

MashedSpud · 18/01/2020 19:14

The sandwich lunch you mentioned. Each slice of bread (with no spread/butter/sauces) is between 80 and 150 calories so if you have four slices you’re looking at almost 400 minus the filling even if you have lower calorie bread.

veryvery · 18/01/2020 19:16

Please read my post which was immediately before your last, Pjs. I think we cross posted.

If you have read that post, apologies and what would you suggest I do considering I've still some excess body fat to lose? Fat is linked to inflammation and cancer, which as I said I've had fairly recently. It is a priority for me to change that body condition. Simple as.

No drip feed. I have mentioned the weight loss diet throughout my posts. Not joyless. I eat out. Participate in celebrations. I enjoy my food. Cook. Explore new recipes and different types of food. Enjoy my running. No one that knows me thinks I have a problem.

needanewnamechange · 18/01/2020 19:30

What's wrong with cream?
Nothing if it's occasionally but if you want to loose weight not all the time .
Moderation is the key .

Scarlettpixie · 18/01/2020 19:32

Yabu to think that is a standard family menu though.

Who just has a sandwich for lunch? Granted that will be 400-500 cals but most people Would add crisps or a snack - at the very least a yoghurt, salad or some fruit while some will add cake or chocolate - so say 80-300 cals per extra. What about drinks? Bottle of orange juice is around 120 cals. A large latte is around 250 cals.

Same with dinner. I think you are seriously underestimating the calories on peoples plates.

We are designed to want hyper palatable foods containing salt, fat and sugar. People struggle to avoid these or even cut them down without following some sort of plan. That is where the diet industry comes in. People who don’t struggle with weight issues often don’t understand why people don’t just eat less. It isn’t that simple.

veryvery · 18/01/2020 19:33

need, I have cream everyday (and have lost weight)! Fat, in itself, is not the enemy. Look up Dr Jason Fung.

BlueEyedGreeness · 18/01/2020 19:34

😂

Scarlettpixie · 18/01/2020 19:36

Presumable your family meals were not low enough in calories before you started watching what you eat or you wouldn’t have been over weight.

Personal health issues are often the thing that kicks people into action. Glad it is working for you OP but you do sound a bit judgy in your original post!

Scarlettpixie · 18/01/2020 19:36

Fat most certainly os the enemy Very. It is bad for heart health.

veryvery · 18/01/2020 19:42

Scarlett, I am not the Op. Yes, I did lose sight of my portions. I live with strapping men and my portions had crept up to meet theirs!Grin They are lean, fit and not overweight. I had also hurt my back and found exercise painful for a while.

And no fat in itself is not the enemy and not bad for heart health as long as it is not eaten alongside sugar. I have had ECGs done before and after starting my diet and exercise regime and my heart health has improved. My veins and circulation has also improved. My veins suffered with hardening and tightening with the chemo I had.

As I said before look up Jason Fung.

stripeypillowcase · 18/01/2020 19:47

portion sizes
snacking
milk/sugar in hot drink, soft drinks

if everyone one would just eat 3 meals a day and only drink water I would sort of agree with you.

however, some meal deals are shocking calorie wise: sandwich with cheese & chutney, chrisps and smothie are easily 600 calories

needanewnamechange · 18/01/2020 19:52

@veryvery course fat is bad for you but there are good fats and bad fats . I think that's where your getting confused.

Pjsandbaileys · 18/01/2020 19:52

Sorry I did cross post, well done for dealing with a Cancer diagnosis in a positive proactive manner you will undoubtedly be healthier at a BMI under 25. I had read your first post and to be fair you are doing that diet with medical supervision and I applaud you for that but the one size fits all approach doesn't work. Eating a calorie reduced diet as per your example would not be practical for someone like myself on a long term basis for both medical, body frame/height and activity levels. Sort term it's fine but I'd be pretty moody. People generally know if they eat less they will lose weight but for an array of reasons struggle, that's why there is a multi million pound diet industry.

adaline · 18/01/2020 19:54

A Tesco cheese and pickle sandwich alone has over 500 calories. So that combination is probably closer to 1000 calories.

veryvery · 18/01/2020 19:54

need, please, please have even just a little look at Jason Fung. Saturated, animal fat is pretty inert and not bad for heart health if not eaten alongside sugar/simple carbs. It helps satiate the appetite.

CSIblonde · 18/01/2020 19:54

In theory yes, but an awful lot of people's portion control is seriously out of whack. At school all my friends were overweight & had massive packed lunches with 4 slices of bread, fizzy drink, yoghurt, biscuits . Mine was half theirs, no fizzy drink, no yoghurt, 1 biscuit: & guess who the skinny one was. Similarly my friends parents spent all their £ on booze & she had to steal food. Now, from habit, she'll not eat one day, but then she cooks the most massive meal the next. I literally felt ill at the 6inch high mound of mashed potatoe the first time I stayed for a meal. I'm greedy, but I can only ever eat half when I go there.

Pjsandbaileys · 18/01/2020 19:56

Oh @veryvery I see where I've gone wrong I thought you where the OP I posting on the thread in answer to the aibu, if I was commenting on your post I would have tagged you.

noblegiraffe · 18/01/2020 19:57

Ladle full of beef in beer, sweet potato wedge, a Yorkshire, green beans and peas with 1 large glass on wine and a mug of coffee and cream afterwards.

I have a glass of water with my dinner which means I can afford to eat a bit more food.

veryvery · 18/01/2020 20:00

I applaud you for that but the one size fits all approach doesn't work.

Thank you. However I never said a one size fits all approach does work.I posted about my diet, initially, just for example purposes. What normal family meal portions might look like on a weight loss diet. To show how easy it is to lose sight of portions when trying to lose weight. I started off gently until the weight loss kicked in. This level of eating is what worked for me. The running I just enjoy on its own merits. Smile

managedmis · 18/01/2020 20:01

So many people are overweight because they are too stupid to eat properly. This is what it comes down to. The diet industry knows this. Which is why they are billionaires.
