To think most family meals are low enough in caloroes and the diet industry is not necessary?

Obviously not if you're going to deep fry everything but we know that. A standard family menu at home.

A grab and go breakfast of cereal, porridge, toast, eggs or fruit and yogurt will be no more than 400 calories.

A sandwich lunch will be about 4/500 calories

A home cooked dinner based around lean protein, some carbs and veg will be about 500 provided you go easy on the oil and butter . Even an M&S beef lasagne is only 620

So, 3 meals a day = 1500 calories max. We don't need special products or cookery books.

We do need to stop with all the junk we eat and drink between meals. But we have to do that whether we foĺlow a diet book or buy diet products or not.

I did lo carb about 22 years ago and it worked great - can't do it now as veggie/mostly vegan

Way too hard to do low carb without the loveliness of fuck tons of cheese Grin

Your posts, while not wholly off topic, are going a step further as you are talking about eating extremely reduced portions (A single wedge) in order to run a high calorie deficit and lose weight..

Just because I don't eat a lot of potatoes does not mean I don't eat a good amount of other food! There are other vegetables!

A 1000 calorie deficit is not unusual when on a weight loss diet. Some diets are based on a larger deficit, such as Michael Mosely's 'Blood Sugar Diet', some diets are based on only a 500 calorie deficit. I am quite happy with 1000 cal deficit, so why not?

I want to lose body fat for my health. Having had cancer and read studies that link it to excess body fat I've got a very compelling incentive. My DH does work for local government and knows the NHS talk about 'lifestyle cancers'. I don't want to fall into that bracket (again) if I can help it! I can tell you now chemo was worse than a 1000 calorie deficit!

I think for most people, the issue is portion sizes. Things like meal deals encourage people to eat more. Also, snacks -very few people only eat 3 meals per day.

Many people don't move enough either.

There shouldn't be a need to buy diet foods but care over portions and hidden extras such as condiments is a must.

veryvery · 18/01/2020 15:57

Laurie, you might be able to try Maffetone training and not eat an excess of simple carbs and sugars, though. Which would help with fat adaptation. Being vegan won't stop you doing that. Smile

Want to loose weight and keep it off see what a slim person eats .
They eat what they fancy but when full or not hungry they don't eat .
Low fat meals are rubbish .
Home cooked meals are fine as long as lean meat lots of veg no cream .
It's the snacks , booze and lack of exercise that makes people put weight on .
It took me years to realise but I'm much happier now.

People lose weight on Ketogenic diets. So it's not all about low fat. A lots of scientists and nutritionists are changing their mind about fat in the diet.

Junie70 · 18/01/2020 16:10

Most of us need to eat less and move more.

It's not rocket science.

Sonichu · 18/01/2020 16:21

" If the dinner doesn't have many carbs in I might add a single potato wedge or 3 chips or a dessert spoon or rice or table spoon of mash"

This is mental.

What's wrong with cream?

😂😂 You can always guarantee that a Mumsnet food thread will give you a chuckle

Why? I don't get sugar cravings, or feel hungry between meals if I eat less carbs. Which is important if you are trying to lose weight or even in preventing weight gain. Yet I like to have a little taste of what I fancy. So I just eat a small amount. That way I am satisfied and I don't feel like I've missed out.

Pleased I amused you. I'm quite happy with my way of eating, though.

veryvery · 18/01/2020 16:42

And one small roast potato (equivalent to a wedge I reckon, at least the way we make them) is 164 calories so you can see how the calories would easily add up if you ate more.

Good God. I can't imagine spending my life counting the calories in a single roast potato.

Sonichu · 18/01/2020 16:46

"Why? I don't get sugar cravings, or feel hungry between meals if I eat less carbs"

Why bother adding them at all in that case? A SINGLE potato wedge? A spoonful of potato? What's the point?

APatchyTomCat · 18/01/2020 16:48

Has anything sounded sadder than a ‘single potato wedge’?

veryvery · 18/01/2020 16:51

I don't. I just enter the info into my FitBit app. Very quick and easy. I feel happier doing this. I have lost a significant amount of body fat. I enjoy it along with my running.

As I said in my previous posts, I have had cancer. Just about everything I have read links cancer with excess body fat. Tbh looking after my diet and exercising is important for my mental health if nothing else. Virtuous circle because I feel and look physically healthier too.Smile

adaline · 18/01/2020 16:54

I'm sure it is quick and easy, but it sounds utterly miserable!

MimiLaRue · 18/01/2020 16:57

Its all about portion size and everything in moderation. There was a bizarre thread recently where people insisted that feeling full after half a medium dominoes pizza plus side dishes indicated you had some kind of restrictive eating disorder. With perceptions like that, no wonder we have such an obesity issue in the UK

veryvery · 18/01/2020 16:58

I enjoy it. I find it all pretty interesting.

And did you read why I feel happier monitoring what I eat?

smemorata · 18/01/2020 17:05

Yanbu but I don't think they are marketed at families. I have never dieted or used low cal foods and I don't believe in them.

veryvery · 18/01/2020 17:05

*Why bother adding them at all in that case? A SINGLE potato wedge? A spoonful of potato? What's the point?g

Because, believe it or not, I'm a bit of a foodie. I like a taste of stuff.

I just keep cracking up at the mental image of it on the plate Grin
