Home alone with two ill DCs and ill myself. I need advice!

DP is away for the next few days so obviously it's the perfect time for the whole household to get ill with no support around Envy < not jealousy.

I can manage the DCs but I need to manage myself first so that I am functional for them.
Hope some wise mumsnsetters come along with their tips and tricks as I'm not great with knowing what to do.

The worst symptom is a headache with a lot of pain around my right eye/eyebrow and temple area sometimes radiating down the right side of my nose. The eye is either watering or I can't keep it open without discomfort.
Also feels like I have a lump at the back of my throat which is becoming increasingly painful when swallowing and throat feeling generally sore.
I feel generally pants, blocked nose, bit of a cough and lips going dry.

What do I do to alleviate these?
Any medication I need?
I ran out of lemsip last night so don't have anything in apart from paracetamol and calpol for DCs.
I will be making an amazon order so can pop some bits on there if I know what might help.

Any advice would really really great.

Sudafed mucus relief can help if you can get some. Olbas oil for steaming, honey for your throat if you have some in.
Keep hydrated,. You could try gargling with salty water if you have nothing else in.

How old are the children? It won’t hurt to just have sandwiches or similar today.

Sounds like a blocked sinus - try Sudafed and steam. I feel for you, sinus headaches can be so painful!

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 18/01/2020 09:53

Keep up your dosage of paracetamol every 4 hours , a warm flannel on your face should bring some relief. Cosy pjs and blankets on the sofa, plenty of tv , naps and order in a takeaway !

Mix 1tsp salt, 1tsp of bicarb and a pint of boiled water. Once it's cooled to tepid use it to clean your nasal passages. Easiest way is if you have a plastic syringe to squirt a little at a time up each nostril but you can snort it up from a spoon if you are desperate. Do it over a basin because it is both gross and messy. Best effect is when water is still warm but obviously not so hot that it burns. I suffer from bad sinusitis and this is a game changer - I can go from severe headache and facial pain to no pain in just a couple of minutes. Then get a decongestant - something like sudafed or sinutab and take it regularly (but be careful not to inadvertently take too much paracetamol). Drink lots of fluids too to help flush out the bugs. Steam inhalations will also help.

Throat anesthetic spray. It feels odd but it works.

Cornettoninja · 18/01/2020 10:11

Get some ibuprofen too. You can take this alongside paracetamol (try and stagger the doses two hourly between them both and follow the individual dosing instructions) but I find ibuprofen and paracetamol much more effective this way.

There are some decent nose sprays on the market for sinus infections, but be warned some of them sting a bit! You can do those alongside steam.

I’m not sure what the active ingredient in Sudafed is but whatever you stock up on double check all the active ingredients. Especially when you’re ill, it’s really easy to accidentally take more than you should of something without realising it’s in two products.

Thank you everyone.

I've ordered sudofed, lemsip sachets and strepsils.
Also more honey to have in my tea and going to be making warm water with honey and lemon to sip on.
Can't bring myself to drink anything cold right now.

I also ordered a gazillion snacks for myself and DCs and soup to have.
Luckily I have made a huge batch of bolognese yesterday so they can have that for dinner/lunch today and tomorrow and also have some fish fingers and chips in the freezer.
We already have the basics milk/bread/butter/baked beans/yogurt/porridge oats and some fruit they can have for breakfast and snacks too. None of which takes much to make.

They both seem better in themselves today and the appetites have picked up which helps at least we are not all miserable.
They've been so good this morning just playing amongst themselves and eldest giving me a few cuddles and saying he'll get me some calpol.

I've had some paracetamol which seems to have helped a bit but I'm still in my bathrobe looking rather unattractive.

Just checking you know lens op has paracetamol in it so don't take that and tablets

letsjog · 18/01/2020 13:14

@thetreeisstressingmeout I do but thank you.

I will read the ingredients and instructions on everything before I start with them as I haven't taken anything like that in months so I will check.
