To think that it's annoying how many of life's pleasures are bad for us?

Deserts, chocolate, wine, pizza, cheese, gin even sex....all is apparently bad for us.
In excess i know...but noone ever tells us to limit our consumption of lettuce and cucumber do they? So annoying.
I would add smoking but it's foul even though i know many who love it.

I think we are all damaged by our upbringing and attempts to teach us what's good for us. We've been taught that "bad" things are treats. The idea of lazing around might seem good, but actually getting up and doing something active and fun (or even getting some chores done) will make us feel much better.

Same with sweet "treats" we think we're treating ourselves with chocolate but actually makes us feel rubbish. My DN was asked to name something that was a treat, by his teacher. When he said strawberries, be was told he was wrong Shock

JustDanceAddict · 18/01/2020 09:36

Agree.
Mind you my kids love broccoli - they are weird (they eat crap too but can’t get enough of the mini trees!).

My DD was the child who on eating dinner at a friend’s house asked if there was any broccoli or is it just chips with the fish fingers! Blush

Camomila · 18/01/2020 09:42

See the first thing I thought of was going for a nice walk in the countryside (probably because I'm 9m pregnant and feel like a whale!)

The strawberries is a funny one, otoh we want our DC to eat lots of fruit, otoh they are expensive and don't have a great carbon footprint so probably should be more of a treat.

Zaphodsotherhead · 18/01/2020 10:13

Maybe that little 'thrill' that we are doing something transgressive adds to the 'treat' feeling? So if they suddenly discovered, say, a form of chocolate that tasted nice, was good for you and helped you lose weight, we'd stop seeing it as a 'treat' and would lose our taste for it?

Well, we can dream, can't we...

AnneLovesGilbert · 18/01/2020 10:15

Why is sex unhealthy? It’s good exercise, healthy for body and soul.

On Christmas Day we sat down to Christmas lunch which DH had lovingly prepared. Occasionally he forgets a dish left in the oven, so I asked if he'd left the pugs in blankets in the oven and should I get them? He said that he'd asked DD (11) whether he should do pigs in blankets or broccoli, and she said broccoli.

Dancing?

Wellmet · 18/01/2020 10:18

How is sex bad for you? Shock

Coughy4u · 18/01/2020 10:19

Yes. Why cant i just always be healthy and smell great without washing brushing and can have random sex with strangers unprotected and eat and drink as much as i want with no consequences? Doing what it takes to be healthy is so boring.
The only health chore i enjoy is flossing and interdental brushes.

wildcherries · 18/01/2020 10:21

Yes, I wondered why sex made the list?

Coughy4u · 18/01/2020 10:23

Because STIs? Death from choke play? Pregnancy? Can get messy with emotions and fuck up your mental health wellbeing?

wildcherries · 18/01/2020 10:25

Fair points.

Bezalelle · 18/01/2020 10:26

It's one of the biggest ironies of life!

If smoking wasn't so bad, I would be puffing 24/7. I bloody loved it Blush

yellowallpaper · 18/01/2020 10:55

Krispy Kreme doughnuts

ToooRevealing · 18/01/2020 11:06

Yup am with you on this. For extra annoyance, the homeostasis which happens when doing bad-for-you things.. ..the way your body gets used to the bad for you things really easily (chocolate, lazing around) but pulling it back so your body responds more positively to lettuce and running takes fucking ages.

I did a triathlon and literally the only time in my life my body thought "I'm not running enough so I feel grotty" was the week following it (when obvs I slackened off the distance, didn't swim etc ). Every other week of my life despite loads of effort my body has said "I don't want to run too much, it makes me tired".

Three months of cutting out sugar before i felt better without sugar...ete etc

Armi · 18/01/2020 11:07

@Bezalelle

Me too.
