Canadian here: To feel mildly and silently judgemental of Canadians who are excited and giddy about the prospects of Meghan and Harry relocating to Canada.

I've been seeing a bunch of social media posts by folk stating how they are HUGE royal fans and how happy and excited they are for Meghan to live in Canada. Granted I live in a more conservative, old-fashioned part of the country- (btw, I'm curious to know if it is the same in other parts? afaik there is some complaining of the potential costs to the tax-payer) I knew there was strong affection for the royal family in these parts- but I still was surprised by these declarations. These are well-educated people, in one case an active NDP politician (same as Labour in UK) where I was like huh? Do you not see the contradiction of being actively engaged in NDP while also a "huge royal fan" and "welcoming Meghan"??

Also there is a school here named after the queen's second son and I wish to god they would change it asap.

All I know is that Canada is welcome to that pair of twerps.

MsPepperPotts · 16/01/2020 19:16

Canada is about 40 times bigger than the UK so what's the problem here?
Are you worried they will end up living next door? Grin

managedmis · 16/01/2020 19:18

Where is this old fashioned place? Maybe just the province?

Genevieva · 16/01/2020 19:24

As far as I understand it, your post is not about whether or not the couple should move, or any of the details about such a move. It is about the people in Canada who have expressed their excitement. I think you are not being unreasonable because where they live will make no difference to the lives of all these excited Canadians. However, I think it is perhaps an unusual situation in that it brings together two very different groups who probably never agree about anything else. One is royalists who are blindly supportive of the Queen. The other group is young, progressive, liberal and politically left-leaning, who like them because they can reflect some of their own values despite being royal. However, this contradiction does make them vulnerable to a rapid change of opinion. As you said, it is one thing to be enthusiastic in theory and quite enough to be enthusiastic about paying a seven figure security bill each year.

FriedasCarLoad · 16/01/2020 19:27

I hadn't realised there were Canadians who were pleased about the prospect. Yep, now I'm judging them a little bit too Grin

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 16/01/2020 19:31

Only comments I've heard is why we should be on the hook for their security bill.

To my mind if they want to be financially independent they should be paying that themselves.

LEELULUMPKIN · 16/01/2020 19:40

YANBU you are just a stepping stone to the bright light's of tinsel town.

The UK should pay for their security in the same way as the security bill is considered for anyone else at credible risk of threat.

If I was judged at risk.like they are, or Salman Rushdie or anyone else the state would fund my protection.

Spiteful grand gestures that could lead to someone's death shouldn't be part of the what done fund debate.

managedmis · 16/01/2020 20:03

of all these excited Canadians.

^

So that'll be 2 out of the 4 then

questionzzz · 16/01/2020 20:29

@FriedasCarLoad me neither, which is why I was surprised and judgy to see these excited social media posts. There was a tone of pride in these posts, like they were "proud" that Meghan had chosen Canada??

Also they weren't all old royalist fogeys either, one of them was younger than me, mid to late thirties! But I was really surprised by the NDP one.

I wonder if there is a "credible threat" to their security here in Canada? Wouldn't they be as much under threat as any other celebrity, eg we have had Robert pattison here or george clooney here and I understand they have no or very little state security? Some minimu private maybe. After all the whole idea is that they can live here in relative peace and obscurity.

Have ‘em!

Taytotots · 16/01/2020 20:53

It's ok op. Apparently they are buying an F150 and moving to Sussex, New Brunswick for the branding Grin. themanatee.net/duke-duchess-of-sussex-moving-to-sussex-new-brunswick/

cologne4711 · 16/01/2020 20:54

Apparently a monarchist Canadian newspaper has said they are not welcome because you can't have Royals living in Canada as it's a "virtual monarchy" and you only have the Governor General actually resident so they need to stay this side of the Atlantic. So it would cause a constitutional crisis. A constitutional expert in Canada has said that's a bit of an exaggeration but there is an issue.

BananaTaffy · 16/01/2020 20:58

I've not heard any comments in BC, but if magazine sections in stores are anything to go by, Anglo-Canadians seem more monarchy-obsessed than Brits are.

Lordfrontpaw · 16/01/2020 21:02

Isn’t it only until trump goes and they will be off to LA? Not that I have any insights into their decisions...

stuffedpeppers · 16/01/2020 21:06

Honestly no one deserves them after their instagram insult today.

What little sympathy i had is far disappearing as the insults continue.

QueenOfTheFae · 18/01/2020 08:18

@stuffedpeppers

Honestly no one deserves them after their instagram insult today.

What was it?

Redrosesandsunsets · 18/01/2020 08:21

No one here has been that excited (BC) and some didn’t know (or care) about it when I asked them. Others have made social media comments saying they don’t want to pay for M&H and their security.

Ellisandra · 18/01/2020 08:23

Is there no Canadian equivalent of MN to ask this on?
Genuine question, that’s not a snippy, “why the hell are you asking it here, sod off to a Canadian website” Grin

Growingboys · 18/01/2020 09:06

LOL at 'all these excited Canadians'!!!

I'm with you OP, can't fathom why anyone would want them around.

stuffedpeppers · 18/01/2020 20:13

The music - totally calculated and so insulting to the country tht quite frankly is going to give her the means to make her monies going forwards.

Seriously welcome to the money grabbing, sanctimonoius bollocks pair

Since when do you insult and bite the family that feeds your web site!
