AIBU... some dinners you can’t eat at the weekend?

Does anybody else designate certain dishes to weekdays only and HATE having them on the weekend which should be a bit more ‘special’
Spag bol for example!!! That’s a weekday dinner!

AIBU? And also..... what’s your favourite weekend dinners? Grin

Sorry to go against the grain but I don't have time for proper spag bol cooked slowly in the week so it is very much a weekend food here. Likewise chilli. Unless I've batch cooked previously and am just heating it up.

Isithometimeyet0987 · 16/01/2020 17:15

I definitely understand this post! Although during the week it’s all healthy meals, lots of fresh veg, proper full dinners. Weekends are all about more treat foods on a Friday we always have a take away, Chinese or something. Saturdays either me and dh go out (dd stays at home we feee her before we go) or we feed dd and have a nice meal later like steak, roast chicken etc. Sunday’s almost always a roast dinner either homemade or we go it to eat as a family with dd and Sunday evenings we usually do more of a snack/buffet type dinner depending on how hungry we are.

I work a seven day shift pattern but still have weekend food Grin

Eg. Sausages, soup, vegetarian dishes or any form of fish are all examples of things that would never make Saturday night menu!

TheDogsMother · 16/01/2020 17:23

This is so true for me. Roast or casserole or something slightly elaborate only on a Sunday. Home cooked but simpler on a Saturday. During the week it's quick to prepare or previously batch cooked things. Friday is often fish cakes for some reason. Though the ragu/bolognese is only eaten in the week it is cooked at the weekend as it takes ages to make/simmer

Definitely no soup, beans on toast or jacket potatoes at weekends. These are weekday only foods Grin

Savvyblonde · 16/01/2020 17:53

We moved to the Middle East a few years back where weekend is Friday and Saturday. So Sunday is Monday, we are still baffled as to when to have our roast dinner. It seems strange having a Saturday roast but Saturday is our Sunday so it sort of works. Lots of my colleagues struggle with the same phenomenon.

DuckonaBike · 16/01/2020 18:20

Am horrified by how many people are not making bolognese properly. It's supposed to take hours!

The weekend meals thing is broadly true, but bolognese is definitely one of them.

Mrsjayy · 16/01/2020 19:03

Ah i have a relative in UAE and always wondered why they were doing stuff with the kids on a friday but i guess i just didn't think about it hard enough Blush @Savvyblonde

Sundancer77 · 16/01/2020 20:53

@DuckonaBike Agree! Spaghetti bolognese is def a lovely winter Saturday night one for me..takes ages to let it properly soak in all its flavours 😋
Sunday’s generally fairly traditional type foods-roast, slow cooker type meals.
Friday nights-curry, Mexican or the ultimate if having after a drink-Fishfinger butties on white bread with lashings of mayo and wedges 😂😬
In summer, it’s much more hit and miss and no special cooking on Sundays etc

ByeMF · 16/01/2020 21:06

Pizza (pref HM) and curry are Sat night foods. They could be Sunday night foods too, but casserole could also be Sundays, risotto at a push. I like to be a rebel and have midweek roasts as they're somehow more enjoyable.

Obviously in the summer any sunny night is BBQ night.

CreekIsRising · 16/01/2020 21:13

@Itstheprinciple yes I was just coming on here to say that spag bol is not a quick dish for me. On the other hand, curry definitely can be - in fact, I made one tonight, 30 mins start to finish and quite often do. Onion spices, fry, tomatoes, reduce coconut milk, heat, chopped up fish, warm, all done and dusted.

So I agree with the general concept of the thread but approach the execution of it differently.

CreekIsRising · 16/01/2020 21:15

Oh and risotto also a thirty minute dish. In fact it's a mid week staple to use up any stray vegetables. I do now start it off with the frozen ocado soffrito mix though.

73Sunglasslover · 16/01/2020 21:35

Monday - left over roast dinner

What do you mean 'left over roast dinner'???

Drinkciderfromalemon · 16/01/2020 21:35

Totally agree. ClaudiaWankleman sums it up beautifully. You have no idea the amount of time wasted today agonising over the possibility of tuna pasta bake for dinner tomorrow. It's just not Friday night food.

DinoSn0re · 16/01/2020 21:40

We definitely do this! Friday night is something easy from the freezer with chips, then Saturday is our ‘treat’ night (usually a curry with sides and dips) and Sunday is roast day during the winter and BBQ day during the summer.

MrsHusky · 16/01/2020 21:44

my only rules are that Friday night is takeaway night, we always have one, and you never eat the same kind of meal 2 nights on the trot.. so you can't have lasagne the day after Spag Bol.. and you never eat stew either side of cottage pie xD

The rest is subject to mood, plans and pain levels.

PumpkinPie2016 · 16/01/2020 21:52

I do this Grin

I quite often use frozen veg in the week but wouldn't dream of using it at the weekend.

I will happily cook things from the freezer e.g. breaded fish, kievs or buy a supermarket "takeaway" in the week but you wouldn't see them on my plate at the weekend!

I think it's because I try to make more effort at the weekend when I am less hurried. In the week, it's manic so some days it's whatever is quick.

itwaseverthus · 16/01/2020 21:54

So true op! Although occasionally I find the slog of a Sunday Roast takes away the enjoyment of the food and swear the following week it will be Chinese take-away. Have done this a few times and, although enjoyed it, the day feels out of kilter somehow. As though the natural order of things has been disrupted Grin

Tonight was beef stir fry, quick and easy and everyone likes it. Yesterday was chicken pie, the day before Lasagne.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 16/01/2020 21:55

Chilli or Bolognese is a Sat/Sun meal as we like to do it in the slow cooker and don't have the prep time on a weekday. We add all the sides and lots of red wine to the table.

Weekday dinners here are:- risotto, pasta and something, bangers and mash, fish finger sarnies, pizzas, salmon and cous cous, etc.

If we ever have steak it's always a weekend.

Cordial11 · 16/01/2020 22:13

It’s a close vote Grin

iolaus · 16/01/2020 22:22

I don't have particular weekend meals or weekday - but I work 7 days a week (normally not all 7 days but random days over all days) so maybe thats why I don't see the difference

DialsMavis · 16/01/2020 22:53

Friday night is pizza and treat food as we are all tired but I can't even remember what we eat on a Friday in the summer!

We eat curries, Bolognese and chilli at the weekends but ponced up (would make 2 curries rather than 1 and serve with samosa and pakora etc and chilli at the weekend has gauc and refried beans and the choice of rice or tacos etc). Sunday's are for elaborate curries, roasts, pies. Mid week it's jacket potatoes, the dishes already mentioned in their non weekend form, stews, veggie fried breakfast for dinner...anything quick enough tbh

MamaWeasel · 16/01/2020 23:01

You're all batshit! (in the nicest possible way) Grin

pooboobsleeprepeat · 16/01/2020 23:38

I’d be pretty pissed if if someone served me up a shepherds pie on a Saturday night 😡

notacooldad · 17/01/2020 08:23

I love shepherds pie on a Saturday night !! 🤣

JustDanceAddict · 17/01/2020 08:26

Only that takeaway is weird in the week.
