AIBU... some dinners you can’t eat at the weekend?

Does anybody else designate certain dishes to weekdays only and HATE having them on the weekend which should be a bit more ‘special’
Spag bol for example!!! That’s a weekday dinner!

AIBU? And also..... what’s your favourite weekend dinners? Grin

main difference here is that I meal plan and get an online shop for Monday- Friday. So the weekends are a lot more flexible, so we can have what we fancy that day, or grab something easy or out the freezer if we’ve been out. I’ll only plan something big if we have people round.

BearSoFair · 16/01/2020 11:20

Yes! Pizza or burgers only feel right on Friday or Saturday. Lasagne or a pie are Sunday meals.

Skap · 16/01/2020 11:21

Oh no, does this mean DH is right and I am wrong? it's never happened before.
We are both retired so days of the week haven't got the same structure. Yet he still complains "this isn't a Saturday dinner" or " this is too good for a Tuesday".

Nottobesoldseparately · 16/01/2020 11:25

We don't do this in our house as DH works shifts BUT I totally get where you are all coming from.

We sometimes have pizza and wine night midweek rather than the weekend otherwise we'd never get the chance as DH regularly works weekend nights, but people look at us in horror.

My favourite weekends are ones hes doing a day shift on a Saturday. I've got all day to potter to myself and have the music blaring whilst I try out new 'a bit more special' recipes with just the dog for company.

MissPoldark · 16/01/2020 11:26

I also specify foods by which day of the weekend. For example, a casserole might be ok for Sunday but NEVER on Saturday (unless it was a slightly more fancy one, like coq au vin, boeuf bourgignon, etc). Whereas Saturday would be fine for curry or fajitas, but those would be all kinds of wrong the next day.

Yes! It would be so wrong to have casserole on a Saturday but I gave no idea why Confused

I would also never have pasta for tea on Sundays.

It’s mainly because I enjoy having time to make more involved meals at the weekend, instead of being rushed like in weekdays, but I can’t really explain the difference between Saturdays & SundaysGrin

Cordial11 · 16/01/2020 11:26

@skap yes sorry! I’m with your husband on this Grin it’s a mentality thing I think! Good weekend = weekend food

Beans on toast on a Sunday night is sad, lonely and can only foreshadow a terrible working week

Grin Beans on toast represents a little too much cooking for a Sunday evening! For us it's more likely to be a lump of cheese, a few tomatoes and maybe a banana or just a bowl of Tesco finest soup - or nothing at all, if we've had a big lunch.

BlueJava · 16/01/2020 11:29

Definitely OP! I never do a casserole at the weekend - that's a weeknight thing. Try and do a roast on a Sunday (never in the week). Chilli con carne and Spag bol are both weeknights too!

Yokohamajojo · 16/01/2020 11:30

Yes we live by these rules Smile mostly my husband though, I sometimes suggest something for a weekend meal and he without fail will say "but it's not very Saturday/Sunday is it?" Wink

StoneColdSaidSo · 16/01/2020 11:31

Yes I do this. Mid-week meals are quick and easy like pasta, stir fry, curry etc. Sat is something a bit fancier like meatballs, homemade pizza, Mexican, with a pudding and Sunday is usually a roast with all the trimmings and home made pudding.

FreeButtonBee · 16/01/2020 11:33

Shepherds pie is week day only.
I don't generally like mash on a saturday (but it's okay on a sunday)

Fajitas, (proper homemade by me) lasagne, steak are all Saturday night dinners.

Salmon is weekday only (other than smoked salmon!)

GoodnightJude1 · 16/01/2020 11:34

With 8 of us in the house most mealtimes....

They have learnt to be grateful for whatever they end up with for dinner!
One night it could be homemade steak and ale pie....
The next night it could be a fishfinger sandwich.....
If any of them dared suggest it was an inappropriate day for said meal, said meal would land firmly on their head! Grin

adriennewillfly · 16/01/2020 11:39

DH does all the cooking in our house. He can make pretty much any meal special. We generally avoid beige food on weekends unless we had a big lunch and just want something small like a bean burger with salad.

1forsorrow · 16/01/2020 11:41

The only one for me, for years, was you had to have a roast on a Sunday. At 65 I suddenly realised I could have sausage and mash on a Sunday if I wanted to and the world wouldn't end. It was a revelation and since then I've had all sorts on a Sunday, curry, steak and even a McDonalds. It felt very wild and rebellious.

1forsorrow · 16/01/2020 11:42

If any of them dared suggest it was an inappropriate day for said meal, said meal would land firmly on their head! I like your style.

MustardScreams · 16/01/2020 11:45

I was think wtf are you on about, but then read your op and realised I have thought this forever and you’ve vocalised it for me. So much makes sense now Grin

Risotto is a weekday dinner, but arancini with the leftovers is a weekend dinner. Mind blown.

TheKitchenWitch · 16/01/2020 11:45

Yes yes yes! Absolutely!
We will often do something like pizza or nachos or dough balls bolognese on Friday or Saturday night while watching a film, then a slightly more faffy or fancy meal on Sunday (although never a roast as I don't do them). Weeknights are our usual meal-planned meals.

diddl · 16/01/2020 11:50

I used to think this.

And the first Sunday that went by with no roast felt rather radical.

Now there are no fucks given as long as we all eat.

Cordial11 · 16/01/2020 11:50

Haaha I think the title is a bit WTF? Grin

moonlight1705 · 16/01/2020 11:51

Sunday - roast dinner
Monday - left over roast dinner
Tuesday - pasta / stirfry
Wednesday - Spag bol / casserole / slow cooker
Thursday - Jacket Potatoes
Friday - Fish & Chip night
Saturday - something more involved like Lamb Chops Victor Hugo or curry with all the extras.

Aquilla · 16/01/2020 11:54

Definitely, but we're pigs!

CaptainMyCaptain · 16/01/2020 11:55

No, and I'll have a roast any day of the week if I feel like it.

DickDewy · 16/01/2020 11:57

Yes! Friday night to Sunday, all meals are special/indulgent. Only bit of the week I have any carbs!

WeeSleekitTimerousMoosey · 16/01/2020 11:59

No, though my parents did this growing up. We eat a much wider variety of meals now though so rarely eat the same meal more than once every three or four weeks, plus I work fairly random days/hours so what we have depends on what I take a notion for and when I'll be home.

Today I'm working late and had half a turnip in need of using up so I've made lentil soup than can be heated quickly when I get in. I might do pizza (I only like homemade) on a similar day as the dough and tomato base can be prepared before work and then it's a quick 15 minute job to cook.

If I finish early I might make something that needs a long, slow cook like bolognaise, curry or once in a while a roast, or something that's a faff like ravioli.
