Does anybody else designate certain dishes to weekdays only and HATE having them on the weekend which should be a bit more ‘special’
Spag bol for example!!! That’s a weekday dinner!

AIBU? And also..... what’s your favourite weekend dinners? Grin

YABU. I will happily eat beans on toast every single night. its only food.

Stayingstrong24 · 16/01/2020 13:09

I always associate Mondays with sausage and mash!
We always had it as kids on a Monday and it's just something I've always continued for my own kids.
Funnily enough school lunches for them are often sausage and mash on a Monday.

Sceptre86 · 16/01/2020 13:09

Yep but I think it stems from the fact that my mum would do this when we were younger. At the weekends my dad would be home so she could cook in peace and he would take care of us. For example I wouldn't cook a regular chicken curry on a weekend we would have biriyani cooked from scratch instead.

Dustarr73 · 16/01/2020 13:09

I get what you mean.Spag Bol on a Sunday is weird.

I do like a roast during the week though sometimes.I can do it without the crown of vultures breathing down my throat.

Weepingwillow123 · 16/01/2020 13:09

Pasta is a weekday meal for us ...lasagne either
Beans on Toast is a lunch not a dinner ...jacket potato beans and cheese is a dinner ... a can’t be arsed but yummy kind of dinner

SalamanderingAbroad · 16/01/2020 13:10

@ClaudiaWankleman spot on

Beans on toast is a wonderful Tuesday night dinner. It's filling, comforting and delicious.
Beans on toast on a Sunday night is sad, lonely and can only foreshadow a terrible working week.

needanewnamechange · 16/01/2020 13:13

Thought this was just me .
Some weekdays I fancy beans on toast , omelette but never at a weekend. Saturday takeaway or eat out if I cook it's pizza , burgers or picky tea with nice fresh bread and salad , Sunday's roast , casserole, steak .

Equimum · 16/01/2020 13:16

Definitely!

Saturdays in our house are normally a big sharing-type meal, so DH might make several Indian dishes, homemade pizzas, fajitas, Mediterranean feast, tacos etc. We probably wouldn’t eat these on any other day.

Sunday’s are always either roasts or oven meals (lasagne, MLUs all’s) etc, or perhaps BBQs in the summers.

Weeknight meals are typically much simpler. I think this is partly due to time, and partly as we don’t all eat together in the week. DH isn’t home before the kids’ dinner time, so I normally eat with them, and he heats it up later, or they eat early and DH and I eat together. Weekend meals are, therefore, quite special in our house and we try to make the food reflect that I suppose.

MadMadMad · 16/01/2020 13:21

You are absolutely right, Friday, Saturday and Sunday are different and deserve special meals.
These are the nights a glass of wine is acceptable - no midweek drinking unless it is a birthday or other special occasion.

icannotremember · 16/01/2020 13:25

YABU, anything can be eaten any day of the week. I'm a product of a "Sunday we have a roast, Monday cottage pie, Tuesday spaghetti bolognese, Wednesday sausages or fish fingers with mash and peas, Thursday something with rice, Friday curry, Saturday bits and bobs" childhood and I cannot stand the feeling that because it is a certain day we are eating a certain thing. Just cannot stand it.

MulticolourMophead · 16/01/2020 13:27

I'll cook whatever I fancy, when ever. Had had mid week roasts and spag bol at weekends.

2Rebecca · 16/01/2020 13:27

I tend to cook more time consuming dishes on a weekend (if we have time) Spag bol would be a weekend dish for me because a good spag bol needs prolonged cooking time, my weekday pasta dishes are faster stuff like carbonara or pasta with smoked salmon or pesto or a simple tomato sauce.

Ragwort · 16/01/2020 13:30

No not at all, in fact at weekends we are far more likely to be out and about doing sports, going out for the day, church activities, visiting family etc so have less time to cook. I do love making a 'roast' but my DH considers it an absolutely waste of time to spend time cooking on a Sunday Grin. And spag Bol (done well) is a delicious meal whenever you eat it.

Sundancer77 · 16/01/2020 13:32

Yes, so true 😂

I think the weekend ones for me are because they either take more time to make or are definitely nicer meals..nachos, fajitas, lasagna, curry, roast etc..although spag bol is a weekend one for me too..all from scratch, bottle of red, homemade garlic bread etc 😋

It also changes depending on the season..so at the moment it’s more of the beef type dishes, roasts etc..summer is more about Mexican food, homemade burgers.

It would depress me to eat beans on toast or a boring pasta on a Sat night 🤷‍♀️😂

MrsGolightyly · 16/01/2020 13:32

We nearly always have a roast on Sundays. On Saturday I try and do something that's a bit of a treat, for example spare ribs, fries, corn on the cob.

christmaskit · 16/01/2020 13:35

I totally agree. But would go a step further: I always make lentil and ham soup for supper on Christmas Eve after cooking the Christmas ham. I tried to buy a gammon joint to make same in October. My DC were appalled and refused to eat it as it was "Christmas Eve food".

Arthritica · 16/01/2020 13:35

I don't like the implied disrespect of past meals on this thread. Pasta is glorious every day of the week.

BlooperReel · 16/01/2020 13:38

Pie! Pie is a weekend dinner in my house

Thinkingabout1t · 16/01/2020 13:40

My mum was a fabulous cook who used to make cheese souffl’e for Wednesday tea. She didn’t have a leisurely life, or any help. She also worked fulltime or parttime most of my childhood, and let us off helping because she said we’d have enough work to do when we grew up.

Needless to say, I didn’t appreciate it at the time and never bothered to get her recipes or learn to cook from her. I wish I had!

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 16/01/2020 13:40

I've stopped eating meat but spag bol used to be a Saturday affair –it needs to be cooked low and slow, and ideally with a glass of wine in hand. But yeah, I'd never have made that on a Sunday.

Staysexyanddontgetmurdered · 16/01/2020 13:44

I agree 100%
Pesto Pasta = weeknight dinner
Stir fry = weeknight dinner
Homemade pizza we can all choose our own toppings for= Saturday night dinner!
Slow cooker pot roasts = Sunday night dinner.

Elbeagle · 16/01/2020 13:45

We eat anything we like, any day we like! Last night I made quite a laborious curry as my mum was around to entertain the DC so I had more time than usual.
I swear DH’s parents nearly combusted once when they asked us what we’d had for Sunday lunch and we said fish and chips. It just did not compute. We have a roast on a Sunday maybe once every 2 months (we’re usually out so not much time for cooking) but I’ll quite often roast a chicken on a week night for the DC to have with potatoes/veg/gravy, and DH and I will have the rest of the chicken that evening in fajitas or something.

Funkycats · 16/01/2020 13:48

No, I'm just delighted to get a meal on the table every evening. Saturday is a busy day, and we nearly always ha e baked potato with cheese or tuna

FizzyIce · 16/01/2020 13:48

We only have homemade fried chicken on a weekend but that’s more because there is a bit more time and another person to help tidy up (it gets messy!)
I’d never have pasta, sausages or fajitas at the weekend .. that’s boring midweek food !

ArtichokeAardvark · 16/01/2020 13:49

I refuse to eat sandwiches or soup at the weekend. That's a weekday lunch at my desk and would be indescribably depressing on a Saturday or Sunday!
