Changing Career

I'm late 30's. I started studying for a maths degree through the Open University a few years ago and things are going well. I should graduate in about 3 years.

I'm currently employed as a Carer, an entry level job and been doing the same thing since I left school at 18.

When I finish my degree I'm aiming for an apprenticeship within the civil service or possibly to do my PCGE and teach secondary maths.

My family feel I'm wasting my time, I'm too old to change career and should just accept what I'm doing now, or use the qualifications I do have to try for a promotion in the care field. My children are young and both have a high level of special needs, I'm being made to feel that I am neglecting them somehow (I do my studying at night and in my days off whilst they're at school), I've been told lists of things I could be doing for them instead of studying.

AIBU to continue, surely there must be a benefit for all of us as I still have 30+ years left of employment?
