Reasonable or Unreasonable ?

Governments are not going to make any headway at all with increasing birth rates for four main reasons.

  1. The cost and/or availability of childcare makes working unattractive or impossible because of the financial implications.
  1. Until societal attitudes change sufficiently that women aren't discriminated against for having children, and that men take on their fair share of responsibility in the home. Lots of women have one child, find out that their partner is a lazy arsehole and decide against having another.
  1. Care in pregnancy and post-birth. The rate of birth injuries and trauma is appalling and women are routinely ignored, dismissed and patronised about the long term and sometimes life long problems they are left with.
  1. Accountability for the children you create. The fact that a man can get a woman pregnant, fuck off and refuse to take any financial responsibility for that child, is an outrage. CMS isn't fit for purpose as there are numerous loopholes which are exploited by abusive or selfish men.

Given the above, it's hardly surprising that fewer women are choosing to have children, or to have larger families.

@BaolFan.. Hear bloody hear! All the reasons you state are valid. Good to see you have the final word on this thread Grin

@MoonbeamsAndCaterpillars I don't understand how anyone can not be worried about the future for children but some people don't

There is no point worrying about things that you can't change. I prefer to live in the present and be mindful.

Several of my DD’s friends (early 20s) are considering not having children not in order to save the planet but rather because they are worried about the impact of social and economic changes brought about by climate change on their children’s lives.

Surely the best way to guarantee a good future is to have children and bring them up in the right way, to have consideration and compassion for others, to value freedom and democracy as well as the environment....we need to be raising the leaders for tomorrow.
Yes I know that sounds preachy but broadly speaking it's right.... isn't it?

I'm not a fan if CP usually but this programme is good

Meadowland · 23/01/2020 12:37

@Davros Do you mean Tuesday night's 7.7 Billion people and Counting documentary?
A real eye opener, I think everyone should watch it, if only to make us think about our future generations.

Yes. I was ready to kick the telly but it was very good

Meadowland · 23/01/2020 16:13

Were you ready to kick the telly because you agree, don't agree, or just don't like CP ?!
