To talk to upstairs neighbours about noise?

I live in a flat and a couple with a young child live above me - over the last few weeks the 'thudding' from above has really been bothering me, I used to hear them sometimes which I expect living in a flat, but now it's multiple times a day and it's difficult to relax in my own home. I have no idea what they're doing up there, I'm sure just pottering about the flat wouldn't create so much noise.
I'd like to go and have a polite word but don't want to cause any conflict - has anyone else had a similar issue and been able to resolve it?

My neighbour spoke to us about the noise. We’d been in the flat one week and we’re desperately trying to settle the baby. It did make things prickly because I’d been so worried because I could hear every single word she said from every single room. I could hear what her mum was saying back to her on the phone. So I knew she must be able to hear us and everyday it made me regret buying a flat. I am sure she can hear you too. Flat living is not for everyone.

yes, i have, be polite and explain, don't complain, it's becoming a problem can you resolve this ? rugs etc dampen noise down.
