AIBU Distressed after work colleague told me my phone (hotspot) used to access Escort website?

Apologies in advance I'm not up to scratch with the posting etiquette. I've been a long-time lurker here but had no real need to post up until now that is. Also sorry if the title is confusing, I've tried to explain my problem succinctly but its a bit complicated.

I've very upset all week despite putting on a brave face in front of colleagues, friends, and family. Cut a long story short I had problems with my phone accessing the Internet during the past few weeks, i.e. pages not loading, so I handed it to one of my work colleagues in IT who told me he'd look into it. He managed to fix the problem and I got the phone back the same evening (this was on Monday), which I was happy about.

However, as he handed the phone back, he mentioned that while checking for issues, he'd come across logs that showed someone had attempted (and failed) to access an escort website called Adwork numerous times (sorry I don't remember the exact name of the site). Naturally I was a bit taken aback by this as I assumed he meant someone had used my phone while it was unattended. So I pressed him to tell me more. He said that someone had tried accessing my phone's WIFI using a second device (i.e. using my phone as a 'hotspot') so I was quite relieved. With specialist software it was possible to extract times/device names, but we both thought that was OTT as it was probably just one contractors that drift in and out of our office.

However, later that evening I suddenly remembered OH had used my phone as a hotspot last year, and I just don't wanna go down that path whatsoever (I actually feel really sick in my gut as its unthinkable for me). Up till now he hasn't given me any 'suspicions' so I'm kind of angry at myself for even entertaining that thought.

Also surely 1 year+ is a a long time for a phone to be connected to a hotspot. Surely after some time the connection would time-out or refresh and so on simply for security reasons? (Thing is I'm crap with technical stuff like that so I can't be sure).

Sorry if I'm rambling here but I don't really wanna approach my close friends about this in case they think I'm a weirdo or paranoid freak for obsessing about this. I think I am probably being unreasonable but that horrible niggly feeling at the back of my mind just won't go away.

Go back to the IT guy for more info.
Your husband would have to be really stupid to use a hotspot for that, as you have to be close to a person (or their phone) to access the hotspot.

QueenOfOversharing · 13/01/2020 07:33

OP, sorry this is causing you so much worry & confusion.

I'm no techie, so I have nothing to add but think some of the PPs have offered you enough advice that you really should double check with IT guy.

I would, however, couch this approach to him in terms of you being concerned that a colleague has made those attempts - don't let on that you gave suspicions of it being out with work times, IYSWIM. Purely to keep your personal life out of this discussion - in case he wonders why you are pressing for more info.

Hope that makes sense.

EBearhug · 13/01/2020 08:47

He had no need to be anywhere near your browsing history etc

If he's trying to work out why the phone is not loading pages from the internet, it makes sense to check any history and logs to see whether there are any problems showing. It's pretty much the first thing you would do as part of investigating any IT problems.

Interesting parallel thread. www.ukpunting.com/index.php?topic=270465.0

Emmelina · 13/01/2020 09:22

Interesting that we should have a pretty much identical other-side post and from not long ago. Thanks user pi. Other post the users called them out for male cow poop. Wonder if that’s the case here.

Hadtoask · 13/01/2020 09:25

I honestly think your IT guy is up to no good. I can’t see how there would ever be a record of websites accessed in this way. Your hotspot is either connected or it’s not. If not, how would there be anything to see by looking through your phone? Ask IT man what he’s insinuating and why he’s examining your phone. I think he’s teasing you.

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 13/01/2020 09:27

Definitely speak to IT guy and actually sit with him while he brings up the logs. See it for yourself in person.

For those saying it was the It guy covering his tracks- think it through. He works in the same company as OP! He knows better than anyone else which websites will be blocked, he also knows that any audit would show exactly when the attempt was made and that it would absolutely confirm he was the one attempting it. It wasn’t the IT guy.

Hadtoask · 13/01/2020 09:27

Or you’re teasing us.

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 13/01/2020 09:32

From the link above

It's not a particularly well known site to those outside of the punting world.

Awww how cute. He thinks he’s in a secret boy’s club Grin

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 13/01/2020 09:33

I’m now wondering if this is someone researching for a book or something.

BorissGiantJohnson · 13/01/2020 09:35

Haha, that is an interesting thread user314...
Everyone needs a hobby I suppose!

lisasimpsonssaxophone · 13/01/2020 09:49

Either the two threads are from the same person, or someone read the other thread and thought it would make a good story for us MNers Grin

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 13/01/2020 09:50

Yup!

LonelyRose · 13/01/2020 10:04

Hi guys, I've read your replies and I'm just very confused about what to do. If I approach the IT guy asking for more info, problem is I am drawing attention to this after a week of radio silence. The conversation about the logs was very brief, just something like 'this happened and you might wanna look into it...' without really much insistence. I think my colleague probably thought it was something minor and not worth while fussing over. And if I now approach him again after a week asking for more details it will draw attention to myself. On the other hand if I approach OH he will plain deny it, although as someone said I could bring it up in passing and see his reaction. I will really need to think about this as I'm desperate to get to the bottom of it. Re: suspicions about my colleague in IT I don't see him doing something like that and mentioning it. Why would he access the site on my phone anyway? It doesn't make sense. I got the impression he just wanted to raise it in case I wanted to take it up with my boss, but we were both of the impression (at the time) we should just let it go. I am running late for work because of all this and its really make me so upset. Anyway just wanted to update (although not much of an update yet) as you've been so kind to chip in with your advice. Much appreciated

Mmhmm.

LonelyRose · 13/01/2020 10:08

The last few replies, the site the colleague mentioned was Adwork (but like I said I might have got this wrong). A few here have mentioned some site called Adultwork and it may even be that. But no other sites were mentioned at all. There is only one way to confirm this - by approaching the IT guy and that's something I'm dreading to do now

mummmy2017 · 13/01/2020 10:15

I think he got mixed up.
I don't think your hubby did it.
Just change the hotspot password, then you know it won't happen again.

PhilCornwall1 · 13/01/2020 10:16

If based on the previous few posts, this whole thread isn't gobshite, why be worried about approaching a support person in IT?

Based on reading the thread on the other link, this certainly whiffs of bullshit.

SaskiaRembrandt · 13/01/2020 10:23

Oh, I see, the shit writers are back.

ForInstance · 13/01/2020 10:30

Not sure what to make of this OP. Re your suspicions about your OH, YADNBU and I hope it is not him. But if it was anyone else it’s unpleasant but I don’t think that big a deal...

BorissGiantJohnson · 13/01/2020 10:32

I've reported this thread as a troll thread so likely it'll be deleted soon.

Highonpotandused · 13/01/2020 10:42

My devices remember other devices that I’ve used as hotspots. Once you’ve used it once it keeps it in its memory, similar to WiFi connections.

Highonpotandused · 13/01/2020 10:46

Oh just say updates. That Punting thread page seems to be have been deleted?

DecemberSnow · 13/01/2020 10:48

If you are that worried, the best thing to do, surely is, get the time / date / device and then you can either rule in or rule out your husband

A hotspot only lasts while you are very close to it...

Someone tried to connect and take my pictures off my phone while on a train once.....

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 13/01/2020 10:48

I can still see it high
