To ask teachers on here a question

My DD 6 has broken her right thumb. She is in Year 1 and loves doing tons of neat writing. She is upset that she won't be able to write for probably 3 weeks maybe more due to her thumb being out of action.

What is the teacher likely to do with her? She thinks she can type on a computer instead but I don't think they have any in the class room.

Any experience from teachers would be appreciated. I am not worried that she will fall behind and not be able to catch up, but obvs 3 weeks is a long time not to be using a pen!!

I would probably either find her a laptop or scribe for her (probably using a phoneme mat so that she could tell me how to spell the words).
Hope her thumb feels better soon.

We'd get her a laptop. Or a TA would scribe for her. Sometimes she might work with a partner, and decide answers together with the partner writing them down and I'd photocopy the work so it went in both books. Depends on the task, obviously.
If she couldn't do PE I'd give her a Very Important Job to do, like keeping score or coaching a friend. A good school will do whatever they can to minimise the impact on her learning and make sure she doesn't feel left out.
Hope she feels better soon!

Yes, either laptop, scribe, or partner work so the other child can do the writing.

My DS wrote with his other hand. It was messy but he thought it was fun

There are probably a few iPads in school too which she could use easily enough.

FuckingHateRats · 12/01/2020 09:03

I'd get her an iPad.

She'll be given a computer of some kind. If the school doesn't have any free, she'll be able to take a laptop/tablet from home.

Could she hold a pen in her fist? Using a marker on a flip chart pad might work if she can.

Greenteandchives · 12/01/2020 09:06

I’m not a teacher but you could look at getting her a finger pen to use. That might be fun.
Look on Amazon.
