I think it’s an Americanism, loads of Youtubers seem to use it. It’s mildly irritating but young people have always adopted slang and expressions that irritate their parents, ‘twas ever thus!

splishsplashsploshsplishsplash · 11/01/2020 22:28

Completely agree! It irritates me too!

Yabadee · 11/01/2020 22:29

My 4 yo says it all the time, super cool, super tasty etc

Thought she got it from someone at nursery but it’s probably that feckin Ryan on YouTube

littlepaddypaws · 11/01/2020 22:29

just read 'super paranoid' on here, fgs, super fuck off Grin

It's extremely irritating, mainly because some people appear to have list the ability to use any other intensifier whatsoever.

It makes language less rich.

CrocodileFrock · 11/01/2020 22:35

It's super bloody irritating.

Almost as bad as friends on Twitter who type "y'all" as though they're relatives of the Dukes of Hazard, when they've never ventured further than Wolverhampton.

MondeoFan · 11/01/2020 22:35

I always say super. Super excited, super busy etc
I think it makes me sound enthusiastic about life and not just soldering on so you speak

Fr0g · 11/01/2020 22:35

preferable to peppering everything with crude language

I say y’all Grin

I wouldn't mind if it was "the youth" Petrichor11 - obviously they are meant to make annoying language choices which sound groundbreaking, edgy or on trend or whatever to others of the same age... It's people my age who used to have decent vocabularies replacing their wide range of options with "super" this and "super" that, and forgetting that "excited for" and "excited about" convey different meanings in British English, even though they've managed to use each appropriately for the previous 45 years...

Frostylawns · 11/01/2020 22:38

It’s rather interesting how language has evolved even over the last 2 decades. My now dh nearly didn’t go on the 2nd date I asked him on as apparently I said super too often. He felt I was a bit Sloane Ranger because of using the word!!!

SuperMeerkat · 11/01/2020 22:38

First world problem! Doesn’t bother me really although ‘blessed’ does because they’re usually humble braggers too.

BodenGate · 11/01/2020 22:39

Yes it is irritating. I watched the American series Easy on Netflix recently and absolutely everything was super this and super that.

thelongdarkteatimeofthesoul · 11/01/2020 22:41

Frostylawns replacing very, extremely, terribly, immensely, really, incredibly, enormously and a slew of other options with just "super" isn't evolution it's decay, or Newspeak...

Reallybadidea · 11/01/2020 22:41

I think I use the word 'fucking' in the same way which is probably worse Blush

ArthurDentsSpaceTowel · 11/01/2020 22:42

Don't know about you but 'super excited' always screams MLM bot to me, along with 'living my best life'.

It's as if the whole thing has been written by Siri on speed. Just chuck in a few of these phrases, muddle them about in a cocktail shaker with a dash of delusion and a double measure of attention seeking, serve pumped through with hot air, and hey presto, you have Instagram.

CrocodileFrock · 11/01/2020 22:42

RustyBear · 11/01/2020 22:46

Not actually American, or not recent American, anyway, though I suppose Jane Austen might have got it from America....

"Elizabeth really believed all his expectations of felicity to be rationally founded, because they had for basis the excellent understanding, and super-excellent disposition of Jane"

Peachypips78 · 11/01/2020 22:47

Argh I hate this!

AutumnCrow · 11/01/2020 22:48

I doubt it @Reallybadidea.

'DD attends a super selective grammar school and is super skinny'

'DD attends a fucking selective grammar school and is fucking skinny'

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 11/01/2020 22:48

Well fuck you, miss prissy arse Grin

Frostylawns · 11/01/2020 22:48

@thelongdarkteatimeofthesoul - you’re absolutely correct. I was a little bit of a nightmare then. Amazing what 20 years with a good partner can do for your vocabulary! I think it was probably the phrase “Gosh, that’s absolutely super” that did it for him . . . . .

OhNoMyCheds · 11/01/2020 22:50

Yes, I hate this trend. It makes my skin crawl. That, and people giving 110%, 150% etc. Fuck. Off.
