Super annoying.

HarrietThePi · 12/01/2020 11:17

Yanbu yanbu yanbu

AngryAngryAngry

It makes me irritable.

Jane Austen didn't replace every intensifier with super though. She didn't use it twice in every sentence she wrote. If she had done, she wouldn't have been published because limiting her range if expression to gushing repetition of the same word would have reduced them to completely banal one dimensional drivel.

Exactly. Also, while I'm on a rant another super popular saying that makes me bristle with rage: " This is EVERYTHING"

HarrietThePi · 12/01/2020 11:22

And yes to starting sentences with "so".

So, this thread has been super cathartic for me.

HarrietThePi · 12/01/2020 11:29

Sorry I know I'm coming across as unhinged but I would also like to add "thankful" to my list. I am grateful for things. I feel like "thankful" has a sense of entitlement to it that "grateful" doesn't have. I don't know, maybe I misunderstand the meaning of thankful, but it seems to lack something.

@TheCanterburyWhales

So if a student, for example, was going to write "it's been a very hot day today" you would potentially give them a higher mark for writing "it's been a super hot day today"?

PhilCornwall1 · 12/01/2020 11:55

And yes to starting sentences with "so".

As soon as somebody does this, I switch off and don't listen to them.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 12/01/2020 12:16

Agree with the Longdark. I think it can make the user sound like they have a limited vocabulary if used a lot, like too much swearing. Although like a pp I think it's actually more annoying than swearing!

And how about "I can't even." As a sentence. What does it even MEAN?!!!

Davros · 12/01/2020 12:19

Comes from German originally. Became popular in US before it did in the UK.
You do hear "super" a lot in German and it must have got translated. I think "for sure" must be translated from other language(s) and also wonder if "init" comes from other language(s), e.g. "n'est pas". You also hear people making a suggestion and adding "no?" At the end. I'm talking sense, no?

LolalolaLola · 12/01/2020 15:38

Another one. When did 'a lot' become one word?

olivertwistwantsmore · 12/01/2020 17:08

It's just a new word. I quite like it.

NameChangeNugget · 12/01/2020 17:37

It’s super shit

Reallybadidea · 12/01/2020 17:44

Alot has bugged me for a long time. My phone autocorrects it, so people must be going out of their way to type it. I've started seeing 'abit' more frequently too Confused

ShinyGiratina · 12/01/2020 18:02

Super as an adjective is fine "this curry is super, which recipe did you use?"

Super as an adverb makes me want to grate my ears with the cheese grater "this curry is super tasty, which recipe did you use?"

There is too much over-use of super as an adverb, which jars on the ears, and becomes dull as a range of other expressive vocabulary is ignored which could make the point.

At the end of the day (Grin) any language that is overused to the point of cliché becomes super incredibly annoying.

StealthPolarBear · 12/01/2020 20:36

I don't mind "I can't even". I think it makes its point quite well.

HarrietThePi · 13/01/2020 00:56

JesusMaryAndJosepheen one of my good friends is from the states and he's thankful for everything. Grin

HarrietThePi · 13/01/2020 00:57

And it does sound smug, but he's a great friend so I let it go

MadisonAvenue · 13/01/2020 01:19

YANBU. It’s annoying, as is “I can’t even”.

FamilyOfAliens · 14/01/2020 07:41

Also hate “crazy busy” and other pointless combinations of adjectives.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 14/01/2020 08:25

Crazy as an intensifier is MUCH more annoying than super!

wanderings · 14/01/2020 08:45

So many YouTube videos begin with "Hey guys!" It's super annoying.

And the Internet mis-spelling which drives me so mad is "loose", as in "loose the game". It's LOSE!

StealthPolarBear · 14/01/2020 16:21

Something that really annoys me is when upset, stressed or angry people are told to 'breathe' (especially when it's 'breath'). And advice or a need to 'decompress'. What is this twaddle?
