'DD attends a super selective grammar school and is super skinny'

'DD attends a fucking selective grammar school and is fucking skinny'

Strangely I would trust the person making the second statement much more than the first.
(I think this may say more about me.)

MAFIL · 11/01/2020 23:01

In our house it isn't not an Americanism, it is a cycling-ism. If you listen to an interview with a pro cyclist of any nationality or type of cycling, every other word is super. As a result, my son's every other word is super. I largely grin and bear it.
I couldn't stand it last night though as he was face timing one of his mountain biker friends to plan their weekend ride. He said " Yeah dude, I am so ready to shred them super knarly trails" and I shouted from the kitchen " No dude, you are so ready to shred THOSE super knarly trails". Apparently he was super annoyed because I am a super embarrassing parent. So that's a super win for me then. Grin

MAFIL · 11/01/2020 23:02

Isn't not...oh dear. I seem to have caught something from my son. Send for the grammar police.

thelongdarkteatimeofthesoul · 11/01/2020 23:04

Frostylawns you weren't using it in the same way the OP's complaining about if you said "gosh that's super" though... You weren't using it as an intensifier, just as a bland adjective, like "nice". If you'd been using it as the OP means you'd have said "gosh that's super nice" or gosh that's super super"... Wink

Conformingtoregulations · 11/01/2020 23:07

I quite like it 😬

Douberry · 11/01/2020 23:08

I think I use the word 'fucking' in the same way which is probably worse

Same here Grin
Hate the phrase. It's super fucking annoying

thelongdarkteatimeofthesoul · 11/01/2020 23:09

MAFIL Grin

I don't care whether it's American or not American - it isn't the occasional use of super as an intensifier or adjective that's irritating, it's the fact it's replaced a wide range of other words and stripped the richness and subtle variation of meaning out of a lot of people's speech.

Doobigetta · 11/01/2020 23:14

I know two people who say everything is super-this and super-that. Both around 40, both entitled to call themselves “doctor”.

augustusglupe · 11/01/2020 23:21

Yes, drives me mad.
And people who now seem to start every bloody sentence with with....’So...
Argh 😖

AlexaAmbidextra · 11/01/2020 23:29

loads of Youtubers seem to use it.

And loads of MNers use it. It’s so fucking pretentious.

AlexaAmbidextra · 11/01/2020 23:35

And while I’m at it, what is this ‘anyways’ I keep seeing on here? Have we had a sudden influx of the Ewings of Dallas?

Cherrysoup · 11/01/2020 23:37

It’s a foreign import. My French and Spanish colleagues say it a lot.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/01/2020 23:43

Eurgh , cannot abide it .
It's up there with "Guys" (my pet hate)

Davros · 11/01/2020 23:51

Another international sport import is "for sure" from F1.
I hate "super this" and "super that", especially when "fucking" will do nicely.

Forcryingoutloudwtf · 11/01/2020 23:56

I am quite super myself so I think yabu.

managedmis · 12/01/2020 00:00

Bit like literally

'I literally swept the floor with him'

No you didn't!

2stepsonthewater · 12/01/2020 00:00

I think it is (or was) common in French too: 'Elle est super jolie'. It used to be a bit posh sounding.

Blankscreen · 12/01/2020 00:02

I cannot stand it.

What is wrong with saying really or very. I'm sure that is what people used to say.

Super is such an Americanism. The first time I heard it was for the name of the film Superbad and it just didn't make sense to me.

The other phrase is somewhen. DH says it sometimes - he's picked it up from work. It makes me want to punch him. It's not a fucking word. Don't say it.

LolalolaLola · 12/01/2020 00:30

And people who now seem to start every bloody sentence with with....’So...

Yes! I find this jarring too.

Everything seems to be 'amazing' these days, also. Amazing this, amazing that. Are you really amazed? It seems like the word has lost it's meaning.

lostsoulsunited · 12/01/2020 00:38

What superlative thread.

RoseMartha · 12/01/2020 01:01

It annoys me too

Chuffit · 12/01/2020 02:11

So, it's literally all super duper then 😂

lostsoulsunited · 12/01/2020 05:22

It's a super interesting thread, yes.

StudentMummy92 · 12/01/2020 05:25

@littlepaddypaws scrolled down a bit in the list of threads and one said 'super paranoid' Grin

StudentMummy92 · 12/01/2020 05:27

This reminds me of my mum, she hates 'super' and 'absolutely'. Says she she wants to smack them round the back of the head Grin
