How much do you spend on your cats?

I've seen quite a few people say they only spend a little bit of money on their cats and that will last the whole month etc, so I was just wondering where everyone buys their litter?

I have two cats and end up getting through one bag of litter a week (£6.45) and then I get a 40 x Felix cat food a week for £13, so about £20 a week, plus £2 a week for biscuits and treats. They eat two wet meals a day and have biscuits out in a bowl to graze on throughout the day.

But I've seen people say they spend this a month and I'd be interested to know where abouts you get your food from as I'd like to know how to get it cheaper? Where's good to order from/shop in?

I get worlds best cat litter

I scoop out the solids and top it off but I don’t actually full change it. I change it every 6 weeks or so.

BluueVelvett · 11/01/2020 14:35

How is it for staying smell-free? Does the urine not make it smell bad or is it really good? @soubriquet

Cat little about £20 a month, food and treats £45 a month, insurance £50 a month.

TeaAddict235 · 11/01/2020 14:35

Too much!

Worried74 · 11/01/2020 14:39

We have 5, each have various food needs. Were using Sainsbury's ultra clumping but this has disappeared from the shelves, have started using Catsan Natural and it appears very good especially in terms of smell. If you add insurance to the mix and we spend about £200 a month. No advice on cost cutting 😁 I am afraid, they are an expensive habit

For food I get “Animonda Carny” online from Zooplus website, this is £23 for 12 x 800g tins of wet food. It costs roughly the same as felix/whiskas but is way better quality, felix food is bad

Litter works out around £6 per bag, but scooping regularly means less full changes so it can last longer

Mine are both insured which is between £5-10 each a month, depending on cover level (one I had to claim on before)

Toys, cat tree, litter box, bed etc all more expensive but more or less one time things.

So rounding up, total cost is 25-30 food, 15 litter and 15 insurance a month but that’s for 2 cats

JaffaCakeGal · 11/01/2020 14:40

My cats are incredibly cheap! They don't use the litter tray I have out for them, and leave any wet food I put out! So I just buy them dry food nowadays Smile

WorraLiberty · 11/01/2020 14:43

1 cat and about £6.80 per week

£3 on Whiskas pouches

£2 on GoCat

£11 per month on Healthy Pet Club at the Vets.

Catapillarsruletheworld · 11/01/2020 14:43

I have one cat. Cat litter is around £4 per month. He does go out too, so doesn’t use it all the time, but keep it as he won’t go out if it’s raining.

Cat food I guess maybe £20 per month. I’d say he costs me around £25 per month all in.

WestCovina · 11/01/2020 14:44

I spend a fortune 🙈 I have 4, but our cat budget inc insurance is around £200 p/m...

I get most of my stuff on zooplus because it’s really reasonable. Recommend using a litter like worlds best as a pp suggest or we use Greenwoods because can’t afford worlds best (even though it’s my fave litter!).
I spend £30 on litter a month for the 4 of them using Greenwoods.

CakeandCustard28 · 11/01/2020 14:49

I have two. They are very spoilt 🙈
Food is about £8 a week for two boxes of whiskas pouches. (Morrison’s usually have the best deals.) We don’t tend to buy biscuits as one refuses to eat them and they eat a lot of treats anyway.
Treats £6 a week.
Litter it really depends, we try to buy the big bags of clumping litter which are about £20 but it lasts us a month. (They do go outside but refuse to if it’s raining or cold.)
Flee and working treatments we buy online so about £60 for 6 months worth.
We don’t have insurance, as they don’t have any health issues but we will probably look at getting insurance when they are a bit older. (They’re only 5 and 2)

Two cats - 10 years old.

They share 2 wet food pouches a day and a small palm full of dry.

Monthly:
Wet food (sheba) £20
Dry food (go cat) £8
Insurance £18

Don't buy treats and they haven't used a little tray in years.

BluueVelvett · 11/01/2020 14:50

Thanks everyone! I've been using catsan litter too which is really good but I find I use it quite quickly, even though I scoop daily! I'll try out World's Best. And I didn't know Felix was bad! I'll have a look at others. Thank you :)

I’ve got 2 cats. I get food and treats from zooplus.com. Cheaper and better quality. I buy grain free, additive free, full of other processed shit free food. I always select DPD as my courier and delivery is usually free.

I buy 6.5kg Purizon dry food (£35) and applaws cat food pouches, normally 3 boxes of 12 (£36) every 10-12 weeks ish.

Litter - I buy anti bacterial, clumping litter from Pets at Home. 2 bags for £22 ish. I change it fully and deep clean the litter trays once a month. I remove poo/clumped litter daily and I have a deodorising spray if required.

Cat toys/trees - I buy massive cat trees from Amazon. They come from Europe and are SO much cheaper but actually last quite a long time. I got a nearly 6ft one for £60. Here that would be more like £200. Zooplus do loyalty points so I usually spend them on toys before they expire. You can also sign up for a discount scheme. Pay £3.99 a year and get a discount applied on every purchase.

Same here. My horse is a whole other story 🤭

SciFiScream · 11/01/2020 15:04

We buy 24 cans of butchers from Pets at Home (about £13, sometimes on a deal for £10). 24 cans does our two cats about 20 days. Plus they get dry food. The go cat 10kg bag was £10 and will last us three months

So maybe £23-£25 per month to feed
£20.50 to insure two cats

Don't often buy toys (we make them out of bits and bobs)

We buy tins because cheaper and easier to recycle!

Other expenses are the annual vaccinations and the flea/tick/worming treatment they get according to schedule.

We provide an indoor litter tray but they don't use it much to my despair. I plan to buy an outdoor litter tray in the hope they'll use that instead of annoying our neighbours.

Caspianberg · 11/01/2020 15:07

We buy all food from Zooplus. They eat Applaws dry and a variety of grain free wet. It costs around £60 per month I guess for 2 cats (we usually do a larger order to last several months at a time.

Use worlds best litter, but they go outside 99% of the time so a bag lasts ages as they sometimes don't use it for weeks at a time.

JaceLancs · 11/01/2020 15:08

2 cats
£3.50 a week on tins
Probably £1-2 on biscuits (they don’t have expensive tastes and prefer own brand)
No litter tray
Plus insurance

19lottie82 · 11/01/2020 15:14

My cat alternates between the litter tray and the garden so I’m maybe £8 a month in litter. She has 2 sachets of whiskas and some Aldi biscuits each day, so maybe £14 a month on food. £3 a month on treats and £6 a month for insurance = £31 a month, at a guess.

You seem to be paying quite a lot for your food. I get 90 sachets of whiskas from eBay (delivered) for £16.49, and a box of Aldi biscuits is 79p which lasts a fortnight.

ghostyslovesheets · 11/01/2020 15:17

food is £9 a week (2 X's Morrisions own wet pouches for 1 cat and 1 bag of Harringtons for the other 3)

Litter £6 a week - but they are in and outdoor so don't use it unless they have to

however one has cost me £2800 this week in vets fees - so I am very happy that I continued to pay nearly £100 a month in insurance for the 4!

Twillow · 11/01/2020 15:18

Just splashed out on the red World's best, as it was cheaper than the green. At least the cat uses it, instead of the bath like before when we had wood chip stuff [hmn]. But it doesn't seem the same as I remember from years ago, much finer particles and will it does clump it doesn't do so dramatically as I remember. Is the green one the same?

TulipCat · 11/01/2020 15:21

One cat here. Don't have a litter tray as we have a cat flap. He eats one pouch of wet food a day plus dry food, which I buy at the supermarket on offer. So not very much.

hettysdrawers · 11/01/2020 15:24

Ours actually prefer the supermarket own brand litter which is around £1.50 a bag, prob lasts a week (one cat is outdoor and indoor).

As for food I'm currently fighting a battle that I won't win to get them to eat anything, I'm getting the sad eyes/what is this shit look at everything I try Sad
