How much do you spend on your cats?

BluueVelvett · 11/01/2020 14:32

I've seen quite a few people say they only spend a little bit of money on their cats and that will last the whole month etc, so I was just wondering where everyone buys their litter?

I have two cats and end up getting through one bag of litter a week (£6.45) and then I get a 40 x Felix cat food a week for £13, so about £20 a week, plus £2 a week for biscuits and treats. They eat two wet meals a day and have biscuits out in a bowl to graze on throughout the day.

But I've seen people say they spend this a month and I'd be interested to know where abouts you get your food from as I'd like to know how to get it cheaper? Where's good to order from/shop in?

Food £10 per week
Pets at Home scheme for annual jabs £10 per month.
Chattery £700 per year ( we go away for times a year).

SimonJT · 13/01/2020 18:51

Monthly
Insurance about £16
Food (raw) £24
Litter £8 (worlds best)
Flea treatment £4
Pet sitter (twice a week) £75

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 13/01/2020 19:00

Not a lot in summer as the litter tray doesn't get used. The rest of the time we scoop daily and only do full change about every 3 weeks. Prob about £10-15 a month guess.

We dont insure. we can afford any bills that come our way so we just pay as we go. Last yr was just fleaing/worming & vac.

Food: 4 50g sachets wet food a day - £1 a day. Plus a handful of kibble prob 20p or so.

MargotLovedTom1 · 13/01/2020 19:11

Feel like our little cat is cheap as chips. She has one pouch of wet food a day (turns her nose up at anything other than Felix Doubly Delicious). A bag of Applaws dry food is £11 from Amazon and lasts over a month. Big bag of wood pellet litter from B & M is six quid and lasts weeks even though she's 100% indoor cat in the winter. Bravecto Plus costs £30 every three months from the vet, and Tesco insurance is £10 month for the best cover.

After having a huge dog previously who ate like a horse and needed professional grooming and whatnot, she just seems like such a bargain!

BlueBirdGreenFence · 13/01/2020 19:12

About £12 a month on a big bag of Purina and £10 wormer/flea treatment from the vet. She's house trained and it works out cheaper for us to pay medical bills as we go with the animals rather than 3 lots of insurance. The dogs are a difference matter and cost a bloody fortune.

mrsbeeton999 · 13/01/2020 19:21

Mine is so cheap she goes outside for toilet so no litter. She only has biscuits as I got fed up of wasted meat getting a flu on it in the summer and constantly binning it and washing bowls. She had vaccinations for life for £99 so only pay for wormer and flea treatment. She’s not insured I put £10 a month in a sub account and it’s currently at £600. Didn’t realise cat litter cost so much!

mrsbeeton999 · 13/01/2020 19:23

Actually I also pay about £400 a year for cattery. I need to get friendlier with a neighbour to feed her when we’re away

Beamur · 13/01/2020 19:26

Mine are a bit expensive at the moment!
Three cats.
Litter £20 a month
Insurance £45ish
Food probably £20/30 a week...

LadyAllegraImelda · 13/01/2020 20:58

We are using pets@home wood pellets (huge 30L sack for £6.99) it lasts the month, very pleased with it. Was usingi catsan but runs out too quickly and got fed up of standing on stray bits of it. Interesting to hear about the world's end stuff though.

Our cat likes variety, so i tend to alternate with what ever pouches happen to be on sale, also tried the Amazon own brand, pretty good, twice daily. He particularly likes the gravy ones, also likes Aldi's own tins (the salmon one in a pink tin, vite something or other, not the pouch though). I have to keep a good supply of dreamies in for treats and more recently those soft stick things. Also has a bowl of go-cat out all the time.

So I'm guessing about £35 a month.

So I'm guessing around

1990shopefulftm · 13/01/2020 21:03

normally get Aldi wet and dry food, treats, and litter so I think for everything we spend about £30 a month including the insurance.
our cat is 7 years old.

1Morewineplease · 13/01/2020 21:34

I stopped using Go-cat after my cat developed a horrendous urinary tract infection. My vet urged me to switch ( not to a vet product but to anything other than .. it appeared that Go-cat is urinary tract unfriendly)

TreacherousPissFlap · 13/01/2020 21:40

£60ish for food, not sure about litter as we've only just started using a litter tray yesterday.
Meds from the vets are around £40 a month at the moment (but likely to go up soon) No insurance as he's an old boy with previous health conditions and the insurance became prohibitively expensive, while at the same time not covering half of what we need it for- we have savings and a credit card put aside for the inevitable rise in vet bills Hmm
It was while doing a grown up budget for 2020 I realised he costs more monthly than the 3 dogs put together Confused

Gonewiththemadness · 13/01/2020 21:43

I have 4 and all together I spend around £120 per month for basics of food, litter and pet plans. I always end up spending more on them than the basics Blush.

RainbowMum11 · 13/01/2020 21:51

About £2/week. 1 cat, doesn't have a litter tray, 1 box wet food pouches from Aldi and a box of dry food from Aldi which lasts a couple of weeks.

sweetkitty · 13/01/2020 21:59

3 cats they eat Millie’s Wolfheart 80% meat no crap food wet and dry £60 per month or Applaws
Litter £16 a month, we buy Tesco own label and clean out every 2 days
Insurance £15

Babdoc · 13/01/2020 22:21

Very little. She has a catflap and prefers to toilet outdoors, so one bag of litter lasts months unused in her tray.
I’ve never insured any of the cats I’ve had over the last forty years, they usually just cost me £20 to £30 a year for immunisations and a check up. My last cat lived to 21 and was fit as a fiddle.
I buy cheap Felix or Whiskas wet food, and provide a dish of dry Whiskas to nibble, but Madam is a dedicated and ruthlessly efficient mouser and usually too full to eat much that I give her. The kids call her the Verminator!
I grow catmint in the garden and dry the leaves for her to enjoy in the winter - it costs nothing. Her favourite “toy” is simply a piece of string that she will happily chase.
Reading some of the PPs, I seem to have the “economy version” of a cat!

VivaLeBeaver · 13/01/2020 22:25

I use world’s best cat litter and a bag lasts about 6 weeks, definitely a month.

They don’t have pouches, just dry food. Spend maybe 15 a month.

tangledyarn · 13/01/2020 22:31

I have 2. They go out so dont often use the trays and I buy clumping litter so maybe £5 a month, gourmet perle food..because even though its crap it's all they'll eat ...but only have half a pouch each twice a day and its £30 for 96 pouches. Perfect fit dry food they can have whenever..a £13 bag lasts about 2 weeks and dental biscuits which are expensive but they only have a small handful at bedtime so last ages. Insurance is really expensive although I have petplan covered for life so could be a lot cheaper..think its £34 a month for the two of them. Plus flea and worming but am unsure of the cost as I've just stopped paying for a healthy pet club plan. So all in I'd say about £100 a month + dreamies + bloody feliway to stop them killing each other 😬

Toddlerteaplease · 13/01/2020 22:34

2 indoor cats. 9 &7 years old.
£75 insurance. (We've had 20k of claims)
£25 for both for the vets health plan.
Food £10 a month
Litter £15 every 6-8 weeks. (Intersand)

heroineinahalfshell · 13/01/2020 22:35

We have 2 cats. In my experience, cheap cat litter is a false economy as it smells awful and needs changing regularly. We spend:

Cats Best cat litter - 1 bag per month, £9.99 (only needs completely changing every 4-6 weeks as it clumps well and reduces smells)

60 x wet Goumet Perle pouches, bought from Amazon monthly, £29 per month (we feed them 3 pouches per day between them)

Dry cat food, Harringtons - 1 bag per month, £5.99 (supplements wet food)

Cat insurance: £7.49 each per month.

So, £45 per month for food and litter, £60 per month including cat insurance.

MonstranceClock · 13/01/2020 22:38

I buy 2x40 pouches from Asda which costs £14. Doesn’t have litter as he’s not a kitten anymore.

raspberryk · 13/01/2020 22:41

About £2/week. 1 cat, doesn't have a litter tray, 1 box wet food pouches from Aldi and a box of dry food from Aldi which lasts a couple of weeks similar here, but less wet food as we forget to give it her she prefers the odd tinned fish. Plus a few quid a month on flea and wormer from tinterweb.

HoldMyLobster · 13/01/2020 22:49

Don't get me started.

One of mine has IBS. The only food he can eat that he doesn't then puke back up costs nearly $3 a can. He and his brother eat 2.5 cans a day between them.

Yes. Nearly $8 a day on food alone.

But it's worth it to not be cleaning up cat sick every morning.

zonkin · 13/01/2020 22:54

I have 2 cats and get all my cat food and litter from Zooplus. They have the high meat content grain free stuff. They also have the Royal Canin dental biscuits as one of them has teeth issues. I usually spend enough to get free delivery via DPD.

We get the Tigerino high clumping litter and it's really good. I scoop daily and do a full change once a month. They are indoor and outdoor but seem to keep the poos for the litter tray. Grrrr!

Please don't scrimp on pet insurance. I used to think it was a rip off but one of them got ill earlier this year and the insurance paid out over £2500 of fees.
