How much do you spend on your cats?

BluueVelvett · 11/01/2020 14:32

I've seen quite a few people say they only spend a little bit of money on their cats and that will last the whole month etc, so I was just wondering where everyone buys their litter?

I have two cats and end up getting through one bag of litter a week (£6.45) and then I get a 40 x Felix cat food a week for £13, so about £20 a week, plus £2 a week for biscuits and treats. They eat two wet meals a day and have biscuits out in a bowl to graze on throughout the day.

But I've seen people say they spend this a month and I'd be interested to know where abouts you get your food from as I'd like to know how to get it cheaper? Where's good to order from/shop in?

We have three and spend a fortune 🙈

Biscuits: £47.99 or £25.99 a month (big bag lasts a month and a half, so every other month we can just buy a small one), we buy Canagan

Wet food: 36 Canagan cans, approx £40, 15 kitten food pouches approx £15

Insurance: £19 each, so £57 altogether

Litter: again, either £34 or £17 a month, as as two boxes lasts us a month and a half. It's really good stuff, called Felipure, and lasts ages as long as you scoop every day. They all go outside but the little shits refuse to poo out there.

So either £190ish on the more expensive month, or £150ish on the cheaper ones. Worth it though - it's really good food and made a huuuuge difference to their coats and teeth from when we got them (all three are rescues), and the litter lasts ages and never smells.

My cat has a litter tray but only uses it when it’s raining - she otherwise much prefers to do her business outside. Even when she does use the litter tray, it’s only for wees - she’ll hold in a poo until she can go out.

I therefore rarely need to change the litter tray in the summer, and only about once a fortnight on average in the winter.

So the only real cost associated with her is food, which I buy in bulk whenever it’s reduced on Ocado.

ViaSacra · 11/01/2020 15:25

(Plus insurance obviously)

Owlypants · 11/01/2020 15:30

An absolute fortune and he's very ungrateful. Cat food he only eats gourmet wet food which is expensive as its half sized pouches you get. Dry food he only eats cheap supermarket own brand and cat litter i have now changed from catsan to aldi own brand.

TheFuzzyStar · 11/01/2020 15:32

We buy the wooden pellet cat litter from pets at home, massive bag lasts ages as I scoop poo out immediately. They eat dry food too. 3 cats, £15 a month I reckon.

Fr0g · 11/01/2020 15:34

I use zooplus for food as well - I usually order every 3-4 months to avoid delivery charges. Probably evens out to £20 a month.
She loves cosma, which is essentially white chicken meat or tuna.
Occasional dry food - she likes Scrumbles or Sainsbury Hypoallergenic grain free - £5 or £3, lasts about three months.

Litter - I buy 30L pack of woodchip litter from Pets at home or B&M £6 or £7, lasts about six months. (for one cat)
My process with the litter is to scoop and flush poo daily, the woodchip I 'sieve' using a chip pan, and recycle the pellets. Doesn't smell because the urine is in the sawdust that I filter out.

She has occasional treats - pouchy biscuits (poundstretcher ones, about half the price of dreamies) and cat milk from sainsbury - 3 boxes £1.60, probably every month or so. Occasionally if local supermarket have discounted meat or fish at the end of the day, she has that as a treat.

I stopped having her vaccinated because she is an indoor cat.

wet food 20
treats 5
dry food 2
litter 1
So around £28 monthly

If I go away without her - up to £10 a day for cat sitter through Cat in a Flat.
'Her' Holidays - I rent a cottage on a farm that she loves a couple of times a year - yes my holidays too, but I'd probably be a bit more adventurous if I wasn't going back to the same place that she likes and is welcome at - £300 to £500, depending on time of year.

We always used to buy the granular clumping litter but have just switched to the wood pellets from Morrison’s and it’s bloody great - cat loves it , doesn’t get trod out and onto floors and it’s lasting longer between changes too.

Food we get at farm foods - 120 small pouches for £22 of whiskas

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/01/2020 15:39

Cat litter £9, £40 on wet food, £35 on insurance. A bag of dry food is about £10 and lasts a couple of months.

Want2beme · 11/01/2020 15:41

CakeandCustard28 be careful about putting off insurance cover. Most pet insurance companies have a cut off age and I think it's around the 5 years of age mark? I tried to insure 2 of mine, but they were too old at 7 and 10, so I only have one insured, who was 2'ish when she came to me.

I spend way too much, roughly €120 pm.

Per Week -
1 x €11 box of 40 sachets whiskas wet food, shared between 2.
2 x €5 boxes of 12 sachets whiskas wet food for other cat who won't eat above.
1 x £3.50'ish boxes of dried food
1 x €1.50 box of dried food
1 x €3 bag of litter
Treats €5

I'm trying to cut back, ie less wet food for the greedy so and son's, and am slowly getting thereHmm

Drinkciderfromalemon · 11/01/2020 15:42

Spend maybe £40 a month. Mine has catsan litter. I don't like it, it smells awful very quickly (or she has toxic pee) but she refuses to accept an alternative.
She will currently only eat gravy lover pouches. She licks the gravy off and leaves the rest, then cries for more.
I buy toys she ignores. Got a self propelling ball last week that she is scared of.

chugga · 11/01/2020 15:45

Pets at home pellet litter 30ltr for £7, scoop the poo out everyday or every other day (she's half in/half out cat), top up the litter but gets properly cleaned once a week the litter lasts us about 6-8 weeks, box of whiskas for £9 from ASDA every 6 weeks and she has dry biscuits as well whiskas always get them on offer for around £4 (I think) and then cat insurance is £6 a month. She gets cat milk every week and has the whole 3 bottles in a pack, buy 3 bottles for £2.89 from pets at home.

madcatladyforever · 11/01/2020 15:47

Fecking loads, 18 year old cat has IBD and can only eat the gastrointestinal diet from the vet or Lilys kitchen for a treat. That's £50,00 a month, plus her vet insurance is £50.00 a month, she has cost the insurance company around £5k of medical treatment including radiactive iodine whch she has had done recently to cure hyperthyroidism. She isn't showing any signs of slowing down and still likes to go out hunting.

Pardonwhat · 11/01/2020 15:49

Own brand dry cat food (their preference) - 50p a box and lasts about 2 days between the two of them. So approx £1.75 a week for food..

And they don’t bother with their litter trays anymore.
I’d say probably roughly another £5 a month goes towards working/fleaing throughout the year.

So annually food is £91 and other bits are £60.
So I spend about £150 a year/£75 a year per cat.

They’re very happy, healthy and active.

Baaaahhhhh · 11/01/2020 15:49

£10 insurance
£15 vet plan for check ups, vaccinations, flea and worm treatments
£30 for Felix pouches, two or three boxes a week
£4 for IAMS dry, last about 2 months

We get all our stuff from the local farm/pet feed store. V. cheap, and like to support local business. Was great when we had Guinea's too.

FruityWidow · 11/01/2020 15:49

1 cat. About £30ish a month on wet food trays, biscuits and treats. £7 a month for insurance. That's about it, occasionally a cattery if we're away for some time

Forestwitch · 11/01/2020 15:50

Two cats both around 13 years old. Lifetime insurance renewal on both in total was £300 this year.
They have IAMS dry food to graze on and one wet pouch of food a day.
So each month we spend about £50.
No litter as they are outdoor cats and have local fields.

ANewUsername321 · 11/01/2020 15:50

One cat - £2.50 per week on Tesco own brand pouches. £2 or so a month on dry food and £5 month insurance. She goes outside so no litter. So about £17 per month.

SanFranBear · 11/01/2020 15:52

Food: bought in bulk from Zooplus (high meat content wet and special urinary dry as he has had ishoos) which works out about £20 month.

Litter - he goes out a lot but is indoors at night so needs his tray. However, I scoop but don't change that often (he only really poos, very little wee indoors) so perhaps £5 a month

Other - I don't buy toys very often, he plays with bits from the house and the kids really but he's on the Healthy Plan from the vets which covers his jabs, fleas & worms which is £10 and then his insurance (he has a heart murmur which caused a spike in premium following investigations as well as his pee pipe problems and endless fights with neighbourhood cats) is £50 which I will admit is eye-watering. But I couldn't bear the thought of him being ill or hurt anyone being the reason I didn't get him treated..

So all in - £80 for one, 11 yr old rescue moggy! Worth every penny!

SanFranBear · 11/01/2020 15:55

I can't count - £85 a month! Mind you, he saves me quite a bit on heating bills as her rarely off my lap or our of my face if I'm home!!

UndertheCedartree · 11/01/2020 15:57

I spend about £10 per fortnight on IAMS dry food for 2 cats. £20 per month on cat litter (CatSan). About £50 every 6 months for flea and worming treatment from Vets. £35 per month insurance. Occasional treats/wet food £5 per month.

happyandsingle · 11/01/2020 16:04

My cat only eats cat soups. She eats 4 sachets a day so probably £22 a week on food. She only uses litter tray as even when she goes out(which is not often as she chooses not to) she will still come in to toilet so a fiver a week on cat litter.Treats probably a couple of pound a week and of course flea/ worming. She also eats whiskers dry biscuits so get a big bag online for just under a tenner which lasts a month.Shes only a small cat so dont know how others get away with only eating 2 wet sachets a day!

VenusClapTrap · 11/01/2020 16:07

I stopped counting after spending £14K on vet treatment.

Don’t scrimp on insurance.

junecat · 11/01/2020 16:11

I buy cats best litter from zooplus in big sacks for around £35 which lasts months as he only uses the trays when he can't get out. I also buy his treats from here.

Probably spend about £40 a month on nature's menu wet and applaws dry from fetch.

Health plan at the vets is £13 a month and insurance £24 a month.

He costs me £15 a day for a cat sitter when we go on holiday.

Expensive spoilt cat here!

mrscatmad31 · 11/01/2020 16:16

I get food and litter from zooplus, two bags of golden grey odour a month (£20) Hills Science Plan (10kg every other month) £45 that's for three indoor cats. Then £45 a month on insurance
