Extra holiday - would you be honest?

I probably will be honest because I’m superstitious about these things, but just interested in views Smile

The company I work for has switched to a new holiday booking system as of 1 January. I went to book a holiday yesterday and the system is showing I have my full annual allowance, plus five days carried over. I did indeed carry five days over, but I booked off the first two working days of January (using the old system). This hasn’t been tracked to the new system.

Should I be honest and retroactively book off those two days, or do I enjoy an extra two days off? Grin

I would be honest. Karma.

Scarsthelot · 11/01/2020 11:08

I would be tempted too.

However, theres a chance it could be discovered late in the year. If you dont mind that, go for it

Thehop · 11/01/2020 11:09

Keep quiet and see what happens.

Fleetheart · 11/01/2020 11:09

Personally I would take them. I know that is not really honest but it really pisses me off when companies put in these systems to save money and then they are very inefficient.
In my last company of a manager did not approve a holiday in time the request got cancelled off the system. Even if you had taken it. It was more trouble to try and reinstate it. So I never bothered.

Bloke23 · 11/01/2020 11:11

Enjoy the extra 2 days holiday, if anything comes back from it just play dumb

pumpkinpie01 · 11/01/2020 11:13

I would keep quiet and act surprised if it gets mentioned later in the year.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 11/01/2020 11:15

I'd keep quiet

sonjadog · 11/01/2020 11:19

I would leave it for a bit and see if the system updates later, but if they aren´t there in a couple of months´ time, then I would book a couple more days holiday.

Ishotmrburns · 11/01/2020 11:21

Say nothing

4amWitchingHour · 11/01/2020 11:22

Be honest

gabsdot45 · 11/01/2020 11:23

I look after the holidays in my job and I think you will eventually be found out.
Definitely tell someone.

Newname1978 · 11/01/2020 11:23

Keep quiet

JasonPollack · 11/01/2020 11:23

Keep schtum. Surely if they didn't notice you also have plausible deniability for not noticing?

Spitsandspots · 11/01/2020 11:24

I had a similar situation. I was honest.
I couldn’t have enjoyed an extra day off for the guilt of stealing a paid day away from work.
It could get discovered and your colleagues could lose all trust in you. Is it worth it?

SerenDippitty · 11/01/2020 11:28

Be honest. If this is a new system teething problem, the chances are you’re not the only one affected, and HR will become aware of the issue and it could come back to bite you.

IsAnybodyListening · 11/01/2020 11:34

I would take the extra holiday in a heartbeat. Especially when I think of all the extra unpaid hours I have given my company.

tunnocksreturns2019 · 11/01/2020 11:36

Strongly suspect the system will update, or that the problem is spotted as it’s really unlikely to be just you affected

runwithme · 11/01/2020 11:38

Chances are you wont be the only one as it's new. Someone is bound to say something.

thecatsthecats · 11/01/2020 11:39

I took over the holiday system in my company. January is still very much niggle-time. Quite possible it will be spotted.

I'd take them personally, haha. But give it some time.

1300cakes · 11/01/2020 11:41

It could get discovered and your colleagues could lose all trust in you.

Would that really happen though? Most people wouldn't have even noticed, it's just coincidence OP happened to be booking leave right now. Usually you don't keep track of your leave down to the day, and you rarely log on to check it unless you need to for a specific reason. Just act like you don't keep track and haven't noticed, I would.

Chihaha · 11/01/2020 11:41

Be honest, this happened to me the opposite way round.

BrownStripePJ · 11/01/2020 11:42

I can't believe you're allowed to carry days over!!

I've never been allowed :(

Oysterbabe · 11/01/2020 11:43

As it's only 2 days I'd probably keep quiet but save them and carry them over into next year so you can be sure you're in the clear Grin

Thestrangestthing · 11/01/2020 11:43

Not a chance I would tell them

FlamingHistory · 11/01/2020 11:44

I'm a people manager and I've had to have similar discussion when people "forget" / play dump. Yes, you may get away without warning but your manager will know.
