Is it just me, or is anyone else not good enough for posh toiletries?

Aibu in thinking posh toiletries are wasted on me, and re-gifting them or giving them to a raffle or charity shop so someone proper can enjoy them?

I was given a few sets for Christmas. I was having a bath the other day, without a small child for once, and I thought for a second about putting one of the bath bombs in for a bit of luxury. But then I thought no, that'd be wasting it! Someone could enjoy that!

I feel a bit like the opposite of the loreal ad. I'm not worth it! Is it just me?!

Yanbu: Give the stuff to someone else
Yabu: waste use them on myself

OP posts:
BringMeAGinandTonic · 11/01/2020 01:22

Pamper yourself OP, you deserve it. It's not wasting, you're using it on someone in need: yourself! :)

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 11/01/2020 05:37

Completely wasted on me too! I would be bored senseless lying in a dimly lit bathroom with wine and scented candles. I don't want to ruin my bath with smelly stuff. I like a deep hot bath in which I can wash my hair, a warm towel and if I can be bothered a quick moisturise with Palmers cocoa butter formula. Job done.

toomuchtooold · 11/01/2020 07:31

I think like for me, what it is is that there's a price I would pay for a slightly nicer smelling bath or whatever it is, and that's quite a low price. So if somebody buys me bath bombs for say 3 quid a pop, it feels like a waste of money to use them, even though it's not my money that was wasted.

CupoTeap · 11/01/2020 07:43

Yes I would have enjoyed it. I should have put the bath bomb in the bath, it just seems like a bit of a waste because I didn't need to and someone could have enjoyed it.

Why can't that person be you?

Betsy86 · 11/01/2020 07:58

Im like you op i will buy another cheap body wash to use even though i have posh bits on display dotted around as i dont feel my quick shower is worth opening them for.... but im enjoying this thread and realising that why am i saving this stuff for best!
Like most have said it ends up just going off or that special occasion never comes... im alive today this is my special occasion!!
I am on a major sort of the house this weekend and im going to start using things and enjoying them! Also things im never going to use and enjoy in general just need to go as it would make me happier not having them avalanche into my tidy space when i open a cupboard door lol.

This threads given me a kickstart... i am worth using nice things... ‘it’s better to wear out than rust out’ is my new motto thanks to pp who wrote that its great!x

Itstheprinciple · 11/01/2020 08:38

I stopped this last year and started working my way through the bottles of posh body wash etc rather than just reaching for the radix every day. Hardly had to buy shower gel all year which was nice and every morning I got a little moment of luxury but it was a mindset change as I'd gathered loads of stuff I was keeping for a special occasion and then I just suddenly thought what a waste.

RevealTheHiddenBeach · 11/01/2020 08:55

Use all the stuff!

Firstly you deserve it. Society works hard to make us think we don't deserve nice things. Society can fuck off.

Secondly, think about a reason even if it's a little one - "I'm using this bath bomb to celebrate the end of the first week back at work" or whatever. Or I'm lighting the posh candles because it's blowing a gale outside.

You deserve to enjoy a bath with the gifts that you have been given - they are yours to enjoy.

kjhkj · 11/01/2020 09:08

I used to be like this and as a result have stuff dating back decades in the bathroom. I am now on a mission to use it all up. Its good for me to feel a bit more pampered and its far better for the planet to use it up rather than waste it.

I've started with all the hotel toiletries even though they're not really posh, just to clear space. Then moving on to the older stuff. I suspect some stuff might need to be thrown out which is a shocking waste

cavabiensepasser · 11/01/2020 09:14

YABU.

I love posh smellies, I buy them with wild abandon, and use them all up with unadulterated pleasure. Saving stuff for best is a bit silly; you deserve alllll the luxury you can get, as often as possible. Grin

thejollyroger · 11/01/2020 09:20

But then I could have enjoyed it. But then it'd have been wasted.

You’ve lost me.

TheWernethWife · 11/01/2020 09:21

Lulu I'm a Clarins woman as well, Eau Dynamisante for me and their fabulous shower gel.

I wait for the sales after Christmas and hunt for bargains.

BarkandCheese · 11/01/2020 09:27

I’m another one whose had the experience of doing a house clearance and finding drawers and cupboards full of things kept for best. Most of them were too old to even pass on. Bin bags full of unused and now unusable gifts are very sad. It was even sadder that some of the things were ones I’d gifted, I’d chosen and bought those gifts hoping my relative would get pleasure out of them not feel unworthy of using them.

Weebitawks · 11/01/2020 09:31

Oh God I'm the exact opposite. Whenever I get nice toiletries I always tell myself I'll make them last but never do! I usually use them all within the first month.

I feel like I definitely deserve them!

SerenDippitty · 11/01/2020 09:39

I use them. DH usually gets me L’Occitane stuff for birthdays/Christmas etc.

SouthWestmom · 11/01/2020 09:48

I love posh toiletries but only Clarins, l'Occitane and a tiny bit of Clinique.

But I totally enjoy them.

I think you mean 'I don't value them' rather than 'I don't deserve them' ?

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 11/01/2020 10:07

I think the op does mean she doesn't deserve them, even though she would enjoy them. It's very sad, but a lot of woman have been conditioned to put themselves last.

OP - why would the person you re-gift them to be more deserving than you? Do you subconsciously think that other people are better than you?

You would enjoy using them. It would feel like a treat.

I dont know you, but I'm 100% certain that you are a person who is worthy of a little treat now and then. We all are.

Vulpine · 11/01/2020 10:11

I am not conditioned to put myself last but i dont need posh toiletries to make me feel good. I agree op

mrshoho · 11/01/2020 10:20

I'm like you too but trying to change. My husband is the complete opposite. As soon as he gets anything be it posh chocs, aftershave etc he tears open the packaging even he has not going to use it. I carefully put mine away intending to only open when ready to use. Quite often I then end up donating for raffles or gifts or letting my daughter have them. I'm slowly starting to allow me to feel spoiled but still there is guilt and don't know why.

Notso · 11/01/2020 10:20

I use a soap which costs about a fiver for 250g, I was given a Jo Malone soap for Christmas £16 for 100g and it doesn't smell as nice as my usual one. It's going to the next school raffle.
Same with my moisturiser, I like one which is about £6 or sometimes in TK Maxx for £2.99. I got a Clinique one for Christmas that was £30 odd, I'd rather have had several tubes of my usual one.
I like good quality but that doesn't always equate to expensive brands.

Sooverthemill · 11/01/2020 10:21

Of course you should use them if you want to!

WeeSleekitTimerousMoosey · 11/01/2020 10:24

Everyone is good enough for 'posh toiletries' but lots of people don't like them or like me are allergic to perfumes.

Anything scented given to me is passed on or binned. I can't take the risk of using unknown products.

PurpleFrames · 11/01/2020 10:27

You deserve to enjoy those products OP! You're not last in the pecking order of the world- so don't punish yourself by not allowing yourself to have nice things. X

Fr0g · 11/01/2020 10:33

I am worth more than bath bombs - aren't they basically bicarb or baking soda? I wear rubber gloves when I use that stuff for cleaning!!!

A good bath oil on the other hand,,,
If no posh stuff, olive oil and a drop or two of essential oil

CherryPavlova · 11/01/2020 10:45

Of course you should use it, if you want to. Someone else thought you were sufficiently special to buy it for.

Personally I dislike bath bombs but I am quite fussy about my toiletries. Nothing to do with price but I dislike any of the things that fill the bath or shower with assorted gravel.

Ericaceae · 11/01/2020 10:46

My granny had drawers of folded new jumpers and underskirts between drawer liners and lavender sachets when she died. Someone else who had lived through rationing, and Flowers to all the other OPs who've experienced the same clearing-out process x
I'll scoot fancy perfume and use expensive bath stuff, but I hoard fancy body lotion and oils for "good" since supermarket lotion's "fine". No idea why. But I might go and use some today.

Spend the weekend in your bath, OP Grin
