Why are MLMs still a thing in 2020?

Had a chance encounter with my local barista—I've been going to this coffee shop/juice bar for 3 years now so we're 'familiar'—at Boots earlier today. She saw me holding some paracetamol and told me that essential oils are not only 100% natural but that they were more effective at curing headaches as well! I told her I wasn't interested. Still, I received her business card and was told to just message her anyway so we could meet up for a demonstration of some sort.

I have no intention of changing coffee shops because part of my morning ritual consists of sitting there nearly everyday for about half an hour before work either people watching or chatting to my fellow regulars about everything and anything!

AIBU to be annoyed that I'm still being pitched this crap in 2020? Maybe I'm paranoid because I've had horrible experiences with MLM salespeople years ago, but AIBU to feel like this won't be the last time I'll hear of these essential oils?

Scary isn't it. The stepkids mum is currently selling diet pills as part of an MLM I despair I really do

I just don’t get how folk can’t see through this nonsense.
I suspect much of it is to do with certain folk peddling dreams on social media.

@1Morewineplease I’m always surprised people fall for it too, I can only summise that it’s a dangerous mix of desperation and wishful thinking.
