Opting out of organ donation

ringme · 10/01/2020 16:38

So the law has changed and this spring the NHS will consider you to be an organ donor automatically if you don’t opt out. I haven’t had a chance to really consider this all yet, WIBU to opt out at this stage until I have time to think about it or is that a selfish move given that 408 people died last year waiting for a donor?

What will you be doing?

Obviously the dead don’t need anything but organ donation can be very traumatic for families. The state already presumes to take personal items, now it’s body parts too. Charming.

Then the family won't give permission, will they?

BoneyBackJefferson · 10/01/2020 18:46

PurpleDaisies

How do you think unscrupulous people would abuse the system?

We can start with organ harvesting. (Alderhey as reference.)

anothernamejeeves · 10/01/2020 18:47

Ffs some utter balderdash on this thread. @formerbabe what the hell comparing using a dead persons organs you know to save the life of another actual human to someone shagging a corpse for no benefit to anyone else at all...I just give up

I am biased as I have worked with children who have died waiting for transplants. Watching them fade day by day. Being poisoned by their own failing body parts. I've also seen children who have left the ward when they have passed to have their organs harvested. It's the most surreal and emotional thing ever. The whole ward and the medical/transplant team honour the child on their final journey whilst they are very soon about to bring life to another child. The most pure unselfish thing anyone can ever do

GoodUsername · 10/01/2020 18:50

I won't be donating anything.
Imagine if you give away your eyes and then in the next life you are blind!
Or you are born without a vital organ because it was taken out.

I had the option of being sterilised after an ectopic pregnancy while I had the contraceptive coil in but refused as I didn't want to make myself infertile and find I couldn't have children if I came back.

I don't even know if I believe in reincarnation but it's the fact I don't know, no one knows!

I'm not comparing them. A pp described a dead body as 'dead meat'. It's a philosophical discussion...do dead bodies have rights? Or are they literally dead meat with no need for dignity to be afforded to them.

SinkGirl · 10/01/2020 18:51

I have opted out as I am donating my body to medical research. There isn't a section to explain your reasons for opting out though.

Very few people are actually able to do this, sadly. Massively depends on why you die, where you live, whether you die on a weekend.

My mum really wanted to donate her body. She died from a very rare cancer. Nowhere wanted her. It’s sad when you think how much could be learned from those who die from illnesses.

Unless you die on a weekday and are reasonably healthy with normal anatomy, it’s actually very difficult to donate your body to science.

She couldn’t donate any organs either - the only thing she was eligible for was donating her corneas but that was out because she’d had laser eye surgery.

anothernamejeeves · 10/01/2020 18:51

Shagging a corpse- benefits nobody
Organ donation- benefits many

Are you really this obtuse?

MGC31 · 10/01/2020 18:51

@BoneyBackJefferson

There’s already legislation in place to prevent that sort of scandal ever happening again. Human Tissue Act 2004.

Next!

AlexaAmbidextra · 10/01/2020 18:52

they only take the lens don't they?

They take the cornea. The clear layer on the front of your eyeball.

lynsey91 · 10/01/2020 18:52

About time it was opt out. I don't understand why it has taken so long. I do think too that family should not be allowed to over ride the dead person's wishes. If someone wants to donate their organs that should be it.

SinkGirl · 10/01/2020 18:53

GoodUsername Errr....

Well that’s certainly a unique take.

Personally if I could save someone’s sight i would do so even if I could hypothetically be blind in the next life.

anothernamejeeves · 10/01/2020 18:54

Well @Goodusername I can tell you something we DO know. Kids die waiting for a transplant. Young kids who have no say in what is happening to their body/future

I can assure you kids aren't born with no eyes because their past self gave them for donation

Also why isn't there a system that stops stupid people using internet

MGC31 · 10/01/2020 18:54

@GoodUsername

Your corneas are removed not your actual eyeball.

Your post is ridiculous.

2020bluegirl · 10/01/2020 18:56

@GoodUsername

Are you being serious? Confused

MGC31 · 10/01/2020 18:56

@lynsey91

Family have no legal right to over-rule if you’re a registered donor. They can offer their opinion on what your wishes are (yours, not theirs) and it will be taken into consideration but that’s it.

hazell42 · 10/01/2020 18:57

Why don't you just start thread saying,. Please don't opt out of organ donation
It's clearly what you mean
Sigh

CosmoK · 10/01/2020 18:57

I won't be donating anything.
Imagine if you give away your eyes and then in the next life you are blind!
Or you are born without a vital organ because it was taken out.

Oh dear....

Also why isn't there a system that stops stupid people using internet

This

2020bluegirl · 10/01/2020 18:57

If you ARE serious, then I better not cut my nails too much this year, or in my next life I may be born with no nails.

BoneyBackJefferson · 10/01/2020 18:58

@MGC31

There’s already legislation in place to prevent that sort of scandal ever happening again. Human Tissue Act 2004.

Next!

Robbery,
Fraud.
Assault.
Drink driving.
Rape.

I could continue the list but there is legislation in place to prevent them as well yet they still happen.

Try again.

ScarlettBlaize · 10/01/2020 18:59

@formerbabe ScarlettBlaize I can opt out for any reason I want or no reason. Do you think opting out should not be allowed?

Absolutely I think it should be allowed. I am also allowed to think that you are a bad person for doing it, that you shouldn't be allowed to receive a donor organ, and that your reasons are utter bullshit and not even internally consistent.

formerbabe · 10/01/2020 18:59

Shagging a corpse- benefits nobody
Organ donation- benefits many

Are you really this obtuse?

So the dignity afforded to dead bodies is based on what? Who benefits and in what way? Is it about the dead body or about how the living wish to use it?

VereeViolet · 10/01/2020 19:01

I won't be donating anything. Imagine if you give away your eyes and then in the next life you are blind! Or you are born without a vital organ because it was taken out.

Continuing to imagine... if you could have saved someone but refused to, maybe you’ll be born with bad karma in your next life and suffer because of it.

formerbabe · 10/01/2020 19:02

I am also allowed to think that you are a bad person for doing it, that you shouldn't be allowed to receive a donor organ

So you believe medical treatment should no longer be based on clinical need but be based on the morals of the patient?

ringme · 10/01/2020 19:03

Ah ok @MGC31

That’s good to know about the lens vs eyeball. Thank you.

OP posts:
ScarlettBlaize · 10/01/2020 19:04

I believe that in a system that is fundamentally reciprocal, you either participate or you don't.

It's the rule of law, the categorical imperative, the fundamental concept of being part of a society.

If you reject the concept on which organ donation is based, then you reject it no matter which particular position you occupy with regard to it.
