Everyone could do with some entertainment - in miserable January! I’ll go first:

For laughing: The Money pit
For a true story: three identical strangers
For watching with kids: Malificent x

YABU to start the thread here- there's a section for films Smile.

BitOfFun · 10/01/2020 16:33

Here it is- lots of interesting film stuff to read there too.

ShoeSnore · 10/01/2020 16:36

Three Identical Strangers was shocking and very well done I thought.

I like comedies or action. I would love some recommendations and I'm always looking for ones I haven't seen.

I've recently seen Long Shot and Yesterday, they were ok for comedy. Just watched the John Wick films and Shooter, good for action.

For a brilliant film, also a true story then if you haven't seen it I highly recommend Lion. It's incredible.

ParanoidGynodroid · 10/01/2020 16:38

There's probably a more suitable section for most AIBU or Chat posts, but they are common hubs that get a lot more attention and traffic. I for one am happy to see a film recommendation thread here.

I'll have a think about a few films to recommend now...

Horehound · 10/01/2020 16:41

The green book is hands down the best film I have seen in a lonnnggg time. It's a great all rounder.

Also liked the Guernsey literary and potato peel society

Horehound · 10/01/2020 16:42

And I just went to see little women at the cinema...fab!

Crazycrazylady · 10/01/2020 16:43

Also loved little woman even though saoirse Ronan annoys me .

Horehound · 10/01/2020 16:46

Oh I loved saoirse!

CheshireDing · 10/01/2020 16:49

I watched Identity Thief on Netflix the other day

It’s hilarious

Plumpplums · 10/01/2020 16:54

The gentleman was brilliant

YouTheCat · 10/01/2020 16:55

I'd recommend Jo Jo Rabbit. Amazing film.

Into the woods for older kids (as in 7+) , Frozen 2 and for adults Isn't It romantic for a chick flick and eye in the sky for something heavier

I'm really glad the OP did. I would have never seen it if she hadn't. I had no idea there was even a film topic.

Spy - with Melissa McCarthy - hilarious.

Knives Out - in cinemas now, crafty and funny.

Carol - beautiful film, just gorgeous

Marriage Story - thought it would be depressing but it's funny, and a fantastic acting from both leads. On Netflix

Booksmart - another comedy from this year and totally under rated. HAs the best, realistic depiction of female friendship I've seen. i.e. the girls really like it each, are totally on each others side and hilarious.

The Irishman - don't bother, save yourself 3 hours. You've seen it all before in every gangster movie ever and the de-ageing thing is weird and looks weird. Theyshould have used a younger actor to play 25 year old De Niro, not a 70 year old De Niro with CGI stuck on.

Portrait of A Lady on Fire - LUSH film. Amazing. Out in Feb in the UK, go see it.

Winter's Bone - with a 16 year old Jennifer Lawrence acting her socks off.

Get Out, Ladybird, The Florida Project, Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, Dunkirk, The Big Sick, Mudbound, The Post, I Tonya, Gods Own Country.

Wingedserpentfliesbynight · 10/01/2020 17:34

And
Moonlight - moving, and beautiful
Ghostbusters - the new one, kids loved it
MIB - the new one, kids loved it
HAcksaw Ridge - uplifting WW2 war film
Moana - Cannibal Coconuts!
KUbo + the 2 strings - workd for kids and grown ups
20th Century Women - great cast, funny
Arrival - aliens, ooooh. But smart too.
Spotlight- good old fashioned journos bring down the evil doers story
Silence
Toni Erman
Love & Friendship
Sicario - top notch thriller
Room - uplifting given the subject matter. Brie LArson is fab.
Bridge of Spies, - Tom Hanks saves the world
Brooklyn - really under rated movie, very good
Amy - Winehouse that is. very moving doc
Birdman - wacky and funny
Imitation Game - Geeks and Turing save the war
Calvary - trust me. just watch it. or if not this one then The Guard.

For comedy:

  • Tucker and Dale vs Evil (excellent re-spinning of old horror movie tropes and Alan Tudyk is fantastic in it).
  • Dogma (Alan Rickman in one of his best roles IMO).
  • Cabin in the Woods (definitely meant to be a comedy).
  • Keeping Mum
  • Clue
  • The Host (this one is a bit of everything but I found it pretty funny).
  • Kung Fu Hustle

Action/Martial Arts (if that's your thing):

  • Ong Bak (Thai)
  • The Raid/The Raid 2 (Indonesian)
  • John Wick
  • District 12 (French)
  • Enter the Dragon
  • Snow Piercer

Dystopian/Sci/Fi:

  • Battle Royale (Japanese)
  • Metropolis
  • Logans Run
  • The Cube
  • Old Boy (Korean) - this one is particularly bizarre with some rather dark themes so watch with care :)
