I'm talking about Jacks and aces etc. in case some of you don't know!

When I was a kid, usually my Grannies would play cards with us kids, but sometimes we'd play it as a family and some of my happiest memories are of playing cards.

I know of no-one now who plays really - particularly in England anyway.

Did any of you play cards?

The game we loved was a game called 25 - it's tactical as well as down to luck a bit. We'd often go to visit my aunt and uncle for a night of playing cards and we'd be allowed to play - but EATEN ALIVE for not playing for the table.

I'm also a pretty mean poker player.

This is making me want to play again.

When we were kids we played a game called Rickety Kate- I’ve no idea what it entailed but did have some tactics involved.

Any suggestions for two person games that don’t get boring too quickly?

Blacksackunderthetreesfreeze · 10/01/2020 17:15

I like cards but NOT poker, to which the cards always seem incidental. I like games where you play the cards, not bluffing / betting etc.

I like a Neapolitan card game called Scoppa. It’s very skillful and enjoyable.

Blacksackunderthetreesfreeze · 10/01/2020 17:17

I liked Bridge when I played it though. Contract Whist is good as PPs have said - it’s like an easier bridge.

Pjsandbaileys · 10/01/2020 17:22

My kids and I all play cards but we are keen campers so have to entertain ourselves (cheaply 😂) on the many, many rainy days

AraGrand · 10/01/2020 17:22

DD now plays team sports and doesn't take losing as badly. But holy hell, she would actually become inconsolable over losing a game of fucking Frustration! Snakes and ladders had to be dumped too! I'm not terribly competitive, so it was outside my area of expertise on how to console her! My dbro was similarly competitive and is now a consultant doctor, but fucking hell, it's no fun when it results in an absolute melt-down of epic proportions!

There's a game called 4 Kings corners. It's enjoyable with just two. I'll see if I can find the rules online.

I’ve spent the last 7 weeks chaperoning panto babes, and having said I don’t like them bringing in electronics, one of the girls brought in cards. She plays 21 (I call that Pontoon, but they stick at 18 and we used to stick from 16)

I’m surprised that no-one so far has mentioned Go Fish or cheat. Played those a lot with the kids (aged 6-12)

FruityWidow · 10/01/2020 17:26

I LOVE playing cards. Grew up playing gin rummy with my nan and spent hours in the pub skiving playing shithead, spit, chase the queen with all my college friends. I also used to hold a poker tournament in my pub every sunday night. I barely get chance to play anymore and DH isn't interested.

MENAGERIE

forgot that one

DGRossetti · 10/01/2020 17:29

I like a Neapolitan card game called Scoppa. It’s very skillful and enjoyable.

My DGF loved that and we played it when we visited. He become like a kid and really excited when he won Grin.

We played with Sicilian playing cards, which are similar to tarot cards. Freaked the teachers at school out.

Marnie76 · 10/01/2020 17:30

As a family we play cards. I see lots of people playing cards on holiday. My 18 DS played cards on holiday with his mates. Lots of my friends also play. I’m not sure where you’re drawing your evidence from but it’s certainly not my experience that no one plays cards.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 10/01/2020 17:30

My teenage son spends a lot of time in hospital, we waste the hours away by playing 'Rummy World Championships' with full commentary from yours truly.
We also play Trash, Shit Head (we call it Shed) and usually try and learn a new game while we're in but Rummy is our go to.

DGRossetti · 10/01/2020 17:31

I’m surprised that no-one so far has mentioned Go Fish or cheat.

(miffed Grin) er, I mentioned "cheat"

Best played with multiple decks - the more the merrier. And one of the games you can genuinely claim "suits all ages" ....

AraGrand · 10/01/2020 17:34

My evidence is just from personal interactions. Even if reading MN, I've never once seen anyone say that they play cards with their children (maybe they have dc like mine). But a lot of people literally have never played so even if you try to teach them (ex DP), they simply can't seem to pick it up.

Probability and statistics was a walk in the park for me, as you're naturally calculating probability when playing cards. Dd incidentally struggles with this part of Maths at school.

Oh - I did learn how to play the 52 card pick up when I was about 7. Bastard of an uncle lol.

LemonPrism · 10/01/2020 17:36

I played cards looooads as a kid, last card, blackjack, pontoon.

I'm very good at it but yes people rarely play. All of my friends can play at least pontoon though.

We're 24-30

2018SoFarSoGreat · 10/01/2020 17:38

I love to play cards! DH not quite so much but will socially.

We played three out of five Saturday nights with best friend couple for about 30 years. HOURS of cards - interspersed with eating, drinking, cooking, chatting. Quite competitive Spades play, mostly women again men because these bastards cheated! Well, we think they did. However, it was never proven. My friend hated to lose. Didn't drink much, and did not quite approve of me getting more and more tipsy and making rash plays that resulted in the men getting points. So much fun.

Also had a women's evening once a month playing Kentucky Rummy (Bastard Rummy we called it) for several years. That was lots of fun.

Nobody to play with now since most card loving friend died. Am hoping to rear fiends in the DGS's, but so far board games or dominoes are preferred. We'll see.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 10/01/2020 17:39

My Mum taught us card games and my grandfather taught her, she always had a pack with her because we were dirt poor and couldn't afford the latest games and exciting gadgets so we played cards.

My kids love cards mainly because I am an excellent commentator and can make a game for a chocolate coin seem like the World Cup 😂

TheMemoryLingers · 10/01/2020 17:40

Card games used to be a good way to interact with elderly family members when my sister and I were in our early teens and too old for children's games (there wasn't the wealth of 'family' board games back then that there are now) but too young for adult social chit-chat.

LemonPrism · 10/01/2020 17:44

Oh and we used to play Bullshit in school!

woooooo · 10/01/2020 17:45

I remember playing Newmarket when I was little (late 70s/early 80s) with the whole family. We'd all go across the road to my GPS and I remember there'd be a big pile of pennies in the middle. Can't remember how to play it though!

My dad has taught my youngest a few card games. She is now an official cards shark at aged 8 🤣 I only know Blackjack and Chase The Ace.

chocolateteapot20 · 10/01/2020 17:45

I agree with you; I love a good game of cards. Dad taught us all to play for pennies when we were little, and though I didn't realise it at the time it taught me how to read people very, very well, especially when they were lying...helped with memory skills too.

My favourites were Rummy, Domino Whist, Knockout Whist (proved very useful when people later taught me Canasta and Bridge) and especially, Cheat and Chase the Ace....

AraGrand · 10/01/2020 17:47

Yes, you can really learn to read people and also how to bluff. Excellent life skills lol!

I know when playing jackass, my Dad would always wink at me when he had a hand so that I wouldn't end up jackass, so we were in cahoots. I've always been close to him. I think everyone should play cards and regret I didn't teach dd how to play. She'd have picked it up quickly I think. The younger you start teaching/playing, I guess it's easier to pick up.
