I'm talking about Jacks and aces etc. in case some of you don't know!

When I was a kid, usually my Grannies would play cards with us kids, but sometimes we'd play it as a family and some of my happiest memories are of playing cards.

I know of no-one now who plays really - particularly in England anyway.

Did any of you play cards?

The game we loved was a game called 25 - it's tactical as well as down to luck a bit. We'd often go to visit my aunt and uncle for a night of playing cards and we'd be allowed to play - but EATEN ALIVE for not playing for the table.

I'm also a pretty mean poker player.

We play a card game called Newmarket at Christmas etc. I don’t think many people have heard of it but my grandmother taught it to me when we were children (in our mid 30s now). It’s a lot of fun and easy to play with younger children

AraGrand · 10/01/2020 15:27

We either gambled with matches or with coppers. If we won, we were allowed to spend the coppers on sweets lol. 2 gambling grannies I had.

I love playing cards, I always have a pack when travelling as it’s a good way to pass the time.

Ex’s family used to play Racing Demon, which I LOVED!

EBearhug · 10/01/2020 15:28

My mother was in a cribbage league till she died. My cousins go to whist drives, and another cousin pays bridge regularly.

I am most likely to play cards on my phone than other games. I play games I know like cribbage and rummy, but I have also learnt some which are new to me.

AraGrand · 10/01/2020 15:28

I think it's a good idea if you have children that you want to spend family time with actually. Sharpens the brain and involves the whole family.

Can't stand card games, and DH isn't bothered either, but both DC can play various games and DC2 often plays cards at 6th form. I wouldn't say it's a dying art.

AraGrand · 10/01/2020 15:32

Has anyone heard of 25? It's popular in Ireland. The 5 of trumps is the top card, followed by the Jack of trumps, then the Ace of hearts. It's highest in reds and lowest in blacks. I suppose it sounds complicated, but I learned it very young so it's easy to me.

We play canasta and misere...

I have to ask, what's Misere?

I only know it as a bid in Solo Whist and Mr Google isn't being helpful.

InOtterNews · 10/01/2020 15:32

Not so much these days, but I always take a pack of cards when I'm travelling. It's a good way to make friends or meet locals and learn their games.

In our house, it was always Black Jack, Chase the Ace (AKA Old Maid), Rummy. Poker and Shithead were played with friends

SaintGarbo · 10/01/2020 15:32

I'm in London. We all love playing cards. I will often take cards over devices to hospital appointments (or anywhere we might be sitting around for a while).

We play cards with extended family but not really with friends. I might suggest it.

AraGrand · 10/01/2020 15:33

I think what you're all calling Shithead is what we called Jackass? Is it the one where the last one to notice who has put their cards down is the jackass?

We didn't but we played Mah Jong all the time

Oh I love Mah Jong, haven't played in ages. My mum has the most beautiful set.

AraGrand when we were little we used to play Poker for Monopoly money with our grandparents.

fussychica · 10/01/2020 15:34

Canasta, Rummie and Nomination Whist here but really only play when we are on holiday with particular people who also play. We like a good board game too Sequence, Trionimos, Rummikub and that sort of thing.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 10/01/2020 15:35

We always play on holiday but not usually any other time of the year. We like strip jack naked, Texas hold 'em, rummy, pontoon and speed. We will occasionally play snap but it gets a bit feisty now the DC are teens 😁

fussychica · 10/01/2020 15:36

Ah Newmarket, not played that since I was a nipper though. My lovely dad used to play it with me.

What the hell is a trump?! Hearts, diamonds, spades and clubs....a trump is a dart here 😂

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 10/01/2020 15:37

Dart = fart Hmm

TheMobileSiteMadeMeSignup · 10/01/2020 15:37

DH and I play cribbage. DD (6) enjoys snap and I think my dad taught her pontoons the other week.

BonnyConnie · 10/01/2020 15:38

I used to play cards a great deal with my mothers family and friends as a child. My fathers family and my husbands family just aren’t into it.

Scbchl · 10/01/2020 15:38

Yes we play cards with friends if rounf for a drink, we play with the kids and they also play with their cousins when they come round. We play switch, go fish, poker, rummy, snap.

ConfidingFish · 10/01/2020 15:38

Ds1 played cards in secondary school with his mates. Not instigated by him, also Uno is completely universal for all ages.

But @FiveFarthings my Grandma taught us Newmarket and we taught our children.

My children play poker (they are 16 and 13) and we even bought chips so they can play it properly with us. They treat it very seriously. We play Rummie too.

Right now we got Settlers of Catan board game so we are loving that. But cards are so important.

Why don't you hold a games night? People can look on YouTube how to play certain card games.

AraGrand · 10/01/2020 15:38

The trump is when you deal the cards out, then you turn the next card face up on top of the remaining cards left in the deck. If it's a spade, then spades are trumps etc.

ConfidingFish - I would but nobody can play!

My Grandad taught me gin rummy and pontoon (blackjack). He also taught me to play dominoes. We used to gamble with the milk money.

CookieSue222 · 10/01/2020 15:41

Newmarket is a brilliant family game! We always played with our extended family at Christmas in 'the old days' - 60's and 70's. Sometimes there were so many playing you got about 3 cards each and it took longer to deal them out, than to play the actual game.
Another good one was Chase the Ace (or chase the ferret as I've also heard it called). My late Dad and I always played Cribbage whenever I visited him - he was a great tactical player and took it really quite seriously. I have really fond memories of family and card games.
