I'm talking about Jacks and aces etc. in case some of you don't know!

When I was a kid, usually my Grannies would play cards with us kids, but sometimes we'd play it as a family and some of my happiest memories are of playing cards.

I know of no-one now who plays really - particularly in England anyway.

Did any of you play cards?

The game we loved was a game called 25 - it's tactical as well as down to luck a bit. We'd often go to visit my aunt and uncle for a night of playing cards and we'd be allowed to play - but EATEN ALIVE for not playing for the table.

I'm also a pretty mean poker player.

crib(bage), gin rummy, knockout whist (I guess Uno doesn't count?)

PooWillyBumBum · 13/01/2020 21:03

I haven’t heard of most of the games named!

We play canasta and rummy and that’s about it. But mostly with parents or at Christmas. I’m 29 and wouldn’t think to play cards with friends, I think we have only played drinking games. Have a friend who is on the pub cribbage team so there must be others playing for them to compete against!

Our favourite is Exploding Kittens which is a card game, but with a specific deck rather than the standard one.

Op...people wont admit to it in rl

midnightmisssuki · 13/01/2020 21:36

we as a family play cards - at every family meeting - we actively remind each other to bring change so we can gamble. My grandfather was a gambler... so was my father (not big money but liked blackjack). Ive started my daughter on UNO and when she's older will teach her the usual card deck. why do you think people dont play OP?

Graphista · 13/01/2020 23:50

“Can't speak for England but north of the border we know how to play cards.” Just about to say same.

My lot play cards all the time. A deck of cards in sticking at Christmas is one of our traditions we try to find fun designs for the kids.

From snap and happy families as littlies to patience (to keep us quiet I suspect) to chase the ace (hilariously manic if played with 30+ players - I’m from a BIG catholic family) to pontoon/blackjack, gin rummy and my parents and grandparents could all play whist, cribbage, pinochle and poker too which unfortunately they never taught us (I think we didn’t show enough interest at that point to be fair)

I’d LOVE to learn to play poker but would need to do so via app/online at the moment (housebound) and all the ones I’ve downloaded and tried assume you already know the hands etc. I need an idiots guide! So if anyone can recommend one I’d be grateful.

I have very fond memories of playing cards with my family and with friends - booze & blackjack is not a good idea if money is involved!

I’ve taught dd all the ones I know too.

But yes I think it’s gradually falling out of favour as a real life pastime which is sad but a LOT of people play online.

I think very few people have never played solitaire online/on a computer and the gambling sites make a lot of money from people playing poker and blackjack.

I’ve got solitaire, rummy and blackjack apps I play on phone.

@dappledthings is mah jong easy to learn? I’ve seen ads for apps but they seem to portray it as a simple match 2 guessing game when I thought there was more to it.

I'm a dab hand at 25, the best format is pairs as that's where tactics really come into play. I had to learn how to play well before I was allowed to sit in with the adults who'd rear up at you if you laid the wrong card. Grin

powershowerforanhour · 14/01/2020 00:23

Dad taught us 21 and Crazy Eights to begin with, so we played those, then my siblings and I played fast and furious games of Spit till we were exhausted and laughing or as per a PP We'd get in trouble because we'd play it so fast that we'd end up bending all the cards!

Dad also taught us to play Euker and Hearts (he lived in Canada for a good while- long dark winters make for good social card players). Mum taught us Old Maid which she had played with her siblings growing up and I think tried to teach us Whist but we were too Spit-obsessed to bother with it at the time.

Cheat with our cousins, then Shithead. Long happy drunken evenings in late teens with friends playing Shithead, it's the best!

I can't remember how to play any of them now.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 14/01/2020 01:28

We play Arsehole (I imagine is the same as Shithead?), 500, Uno, Skipbo, Snap, Gin, Baba Yaga, last card, Briscola and Scopa.

We have games night with the kids once a week.

This thread has actually inspired me to go buy a pack of cards. Thanks OP!

funmummy48 · 14/01/2020 06:41

We play cards a lot with our family and extended family. All the children play too. When we have family gatherings we'll play 3 pack Rummy or Find the Lady. We play lots of other types of games too and would never go on holiday without a pack of cards. We often play after dinner too if we have friends over.

Theworldisfullofgs · 14/01/2020 06:43

Yep. We all play, kids as well.
Crib, 7s, estimation, black Maria, cheat...

LizB62A · 14/01/2020 10:57

My Irish grandparents used to play card games called 45 and 110 - I wish I could remember how to play them!!
