I'm talking about Jacks and aces etc. in case some of you don't know!

When I was a kid, usually my Grannies would play cards with us kids, but sometimes we'd play it as a family and some of my happiest memories are of playing cards.

I know of no-one now who plays really - particularly in England anyway.

Did any of you play cards?

The game we loved was a game called 25 - it's tactical as well as down to luck a bit. We'd often go to visit my aunt and uncle for a night of playing cards and we'd be allowed to play - but EATEN ALIVE for not playing for the table.

I'm also a pretty mean poker player.

Actually, missed the update, sorry. The rules of Jackass don't sound like Shithead, although the outcome of getting rid of your cards first and definitely not being last is the same.

AraGrand · 10/01/2020 16:05

I'm delighted to see so many still play. Can I ask whether you're all English? (I'm Irish).

ara

English

The hilarity of jackass is when everyone bar one notices that you've put your cards down and have put theirs down too and you'll have one jackass merrily oblivious, talking shite, focusing intently on their own hand lol. It's a really fun one to play with kids as they love to make a fool out of the adults.

One other poster I think @bibbabot or something mentioned playing 25 - are you Irish?

We play Shithead all the time. Our old local used to keep a pack of cards behind the bar for us to play on a night. We also play Dutch Blitz but you do need the specific cards for that. Spoons is great fun as well!

combatbarbie · 10/01/2020 16:13

Scottish and living in England, we play cards all the time, pontoon, rummie, chase the ace etc taught dd12 when she was about 8/9, DD7 can confidently play most games

minesagin37 · 10/01/2020 16:13

I don't know? I've made £1400 in two months on casino sites and a fair few hundred of that was playing Blackjack! I think I'm pretty damn good at playing cards!

TwoZeroTwoZero · 10/01/2020 16:14

My 7 y old dc2 loves playing cards - always bloody wins too, a right little cardsharp! We play Take 2. I like playing solitaire (or patience?).

Dumbledoresgirl · 10/01/2020 16:14

I've found my people! If only I knew any of you in real life. My dream of a perfect social event is playing cards for hours on end. Dh and I certainly play every Christmas, and often on holiday too. We have taught all our children cards and now they are adults, they can give us a decent game. Whist is my favourite game. Never played bridge as it seems far too serious. Rummy is acceptable too. But mainly we play variations on whist. Anyone in the south west who would like to make up a 4? Smile

AraGrand · 10/01/2020 16:15

I haven't heard of half of these games! Rummy and Pontoon I've played and obviously go fish and snap and poker. Bridge is one that is usually played by older wealthy women in clubs in Ireland. I've never learned how to play it. The MENZ in Ireland tend to have poker nights too where women are not invited Angry

No I don’t know how to play cards and I don’t want to learn either.

U2HasTheEdge · 10/01/2020 16:17

I play shithead/ power and Irish Snap.

I am wanting to learn more card games.

WeeSleekitTimerousMoosey · 10/01/2020 16:17

Our family play a godawful game at family gatherings similar to hearts on the computer

Amongst our friendship group our favourite is Black Mariah which is a variation on Hearts and can be played with any number of people, using two or more packs if need be.

I love that game.

AraGrand · 10/01/2020 16:17

Aw Dumble - I can host a night in London if you fancy a cheap night out when visiting!

You're definitely in the wrong thread misspiggy Smile

Bluebell878275 · 10/01/2020 16:18

As a family growing up we used to play a game called KENEDI on a Saturday night. It's basically a made-up variation of Chinese Rummy. My grand-parents 'invented' it so it was named after them - Ken & Edi. Good memories!

MirandaWest · 10/01/2020 16:18

We love playing cards. Was always a thing we did on holiday when I was little and I’ve carried it on with my two.

Favourites are Black Maria, High Low Jack and the Game, Rummy, Knock Out Whist.

DH tries hard but isn’t always successful Grin

MirandaWest · 10/01/2020 16:19

Also Racing Demon is excellent with lots of people but needs a few packs of cards. This is fine as we have many packs of cards Grin

TheNestedIf · 10/01/2020 16:20

We're all English.

Jackass seems like a game we urgently need to learn given the years of skill we put into distraction strategy around Yellow Car Punch.

Whist is my favourite game

Sadly I'm in Scotland or I'd join you. I love Whist.

MrsMonkeyBear · 10/01/2020 16:21

Most summers, all my sister and I had to do at my Grandmother's was play cards.

I'm a pretty mean Gin Rummy player, love a bit of cabbage and there were a few others we played too.

I've taught my 5 year old to play pairs and snap.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 10/01/2020 16:21

Need to learn shithead

Introducing a new card game will do wonders for my ‘just because mummy can’t remember the rules it doesnt make her stupid’ fightback

Haven’t played spoons for 2 years...I honestly though ds1 was going to punch his boyfriend last time we played

frankincenseandmur · 10/01/2020 16:22

I play cards with my family all the time
