To think this carpet company is having a laugh?

A major high street carpet firm has quoted me over £400 to carpet this single, straight staircase with a very average carpet and underlay. Wtf?

Where should I seek carpet?? Any good alternatives you’ve used, please?

We ordered ours online and paid a local carpet fitter. I can't remember how much it was for just the stairs as we had all of upstairs and the lounge done too but it was definitely much cheaper than going through a carpet store

Thanks! Outrageous prices...

Any recommendations for which online supplier to use, please?

Why don't you ask the question on 'next door' in your area? I always see people looking for tradies in their area on that website.

We have a local, independent carpet shop that always comes out cheaper than any of the chains. They give excellent service and are really helpful.

The only cheaper way of getting carpet that I know of is to buy it online.

Where in the country are you OP? People may be able to recommend someone for you.

We recently had our stairs carpeted and they are steep so a little longer than average. I bought a piece of off-cut for £40 and a local carpet fitter fitted it for £50. Took about half an hour/45 minutes. Didn't have underlay as bought felt backed carpet.

Did you ask for a breakdown on where they are getting the price?
Maybe the 'average' carpet you picked is more per square metre than you realised - especially if you picked a colour from a sample book - often there is one price for roll stock and another higher one for the same carpet if it had to be ordered in a different colour.
Fitters do usually charge a slight premium for fitting stairs, as there is more work pro-rata for the amount of yardage in the fitting.
My DH works for United Carpets and from your pic he guestimates about £200 for a £12.99 per sq metre 'average' carpet and reasonably good underlay. He's working on around 8 sq metres, but if you actually have a hall and or landing on top that he can't see that would obviously be more. An average with hall and landing would be about 12 sq metres.
So basically you need to check price per sq metre for both carpet and underlay, add on cost of any grippers or others extras, and check the fitting price. Some firms also add on delilvery.
Hope that helps.
