Does this sound like I’m being fired?

In a new job (hospitality). Manager has asked me to come in in an hour to speak to him. My hours were cancelled this week from 35 hours to 7 (!!!!) and when I asked why (in my interview I was promised a 35 hour contract but my online contract says this can be more or less depending on their needs which I hadn’t realised), he said head office said they were over staffed too often.

So if you got a message saying come into work in an hour for a talk would you assume you’re being cut? I’m not the last in, which is why I’m confused because hospitality seems to be last in first out. Only been there a month though.

MrsAJ27 · 09/01/2020 19:09

Sorry about your update OP. Any chance you can go back to your old job?

justasking111 · 09/01/2020 19:25

Eye candy wins the waitressing every time in DS place the lads rarely get a waiting on job.

BlaueLagune · 09/01/2020 19:48

So sorry to hear this OP but hope you find something else very soon.

Biancadelrioisback · 09/01/2020 19:55

As a former hospitality manager, we were always encouraged to so this. Put out job ads before the busy season, say it's full time hours (as it usually is over Xmas) then let them go early doors next year, or just kill their hours to zero. I always refused to do this and would rather have a whole bunch of Xmas temps who know they're Xmas temps. There are good managers our there in hospitality OP. Not many, but some...

Sparkle2020 · 09/01/2020 20:56

Thanks everyone sorry for not replying, been a bit down and applying for jobs again.

I think maybe it’s just that I’m not the same as them? Like they all get drunk at work and sleep around with each other and I’m in a happy relationship and trying for a baby, I guess I’m just not fitted to them? Hence why it wasn’t last in first out kind of thing, as the last one in is sleeping with the manager atm so doubt he would fire him.

Just feel so down as I’ve had so much on my plate with ttc and stuff and now this, just feels like a slap really. Time to get out of hospitality I think, I just don’t really know where to go from here.

LouLouLoupee · 09/01/2020 21:30

Yeah, I’ve been there, I was the one turning up drunk, drinking through the shift and sleeping with the manager. I also worked 70+ hours a week and could rake in £1k a week in tips. Some of these restaurants/hotels are a completely different world to most people’s working experience.
I actually met DH there though, he was a chef. Funnily enough not long after we got together we left the industry altogether. He joined the army and it was a much more stable and family oriented environment 😅

Sparkle2020 · 09/01/2020 21:37

@loulouloupee yeah I get you, I used to happily have flings with colleagues etc and have a couple of drinks at work but it just feels like a shock because those were dives really. The place I’m at now is really quite posh and expensive etc and I just imagined it would be more professional?

OP posts:
LouLouLoupee · 09/01/2020 21:58

Nah, the last place I work was the fancied restaurant in the city, incorporated a private members club etc. The exact same arseholes as the dives, just with more money.

It’s not you at all, take this time to find something that’ll work better around a family.

Brenna24 · 09/01/2020 23:19

That sucks, but it sounds like you are better off out of there long term.

PentreBachCymraeg · 09/01/2020 23:45

Best of luck with new job search, onwards and upwards Flowers

IncrediblySadToo · 09/01/2020 23:56

Bummer.

Mind you, you’re probably better off out of there anyway and at least your partner has a job to keep you afloat for now.

It does seem like a good opportunity to get out of hospitality... you just need to think about what skills you have and what you think you’d like to do...

Best of luck!

EL2019 · 10/01/2020 00:03

Did you tell them you were ttc?

I know it shouldn’t be discriminated against, but sadly there are people that do just that.

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 10/01/2020 06:56

I’m sorry op Flowers

Are you going to stop ttc until you’re in a new job and qualify for maternity pay? Just something to think about.

Sparkle2020 · 10/01/2020 08:19

No never told them I was ttc as I thought it would be a bad idea!

Yes going to keep trying ttc anyway, might not be the smartest idea but it’s 16 cycles of trying now and it’s really getting me down atm. I should be able to get a new job fairly soon anyway, I just need to work out what kind of job I want if I’m leaving hospitality.

Can I suggest a learning support assistant at a school? Its low pay but I dont imagine any worse than hospitality. You dont need experience and I know of several schools who are crying out for people to apply for them. The hours also suit people who have kids.

VenusTiger · 10/01/2020 12:57

@GiveHerHellFromUs and @Drum2018 - and? Companies lose money/profits, get taken over, close offices etc. It happened to me many years ago after 4 months - it makes no difference how long you've been there, if a decision for redundancy comes from further up the chain and the local office takes on new staff, it's just one of those things.

whatisforteamum · 10/01/2020 13:24

Poor you.I work in hospitality and havent.seen anyone used for a month.I did check that killing myself with hours over xmas new year that I would get plenty in Jan.
I never understand why the late or hungover ones don't get told off.Even the ones that skip out early to attend social events of just to get to the bar!!.How I Hate zero hour contracts.😰

Sparkle2020 · 10/01/2020 21:31

@Geneshish ooh I’ll look into that, sounds like something I’d enjoy!

@whatisforteamum that’s why I’m annoyed really. It seems very preplanned and I’d left a decent place to join here as I was under the illusion that it was a full time contract! Guess that’s an easy lie to tell when it’s within a 3 month probation that they intend to make use of anyway :( just feels so thoughtless, these people don’t care about others at all imo

Sparkle2020 · 10/01/2020 21:38

Hey on the plus side I was working opposite shifts to partner next week which is my fertile week and now I’m obviously off so much better chances!! Plenty BD it is lol, hopefully it’s just fate 😂😂

OP posts:
Lifeisabeach09 · 10/01/2020 21:45

Sounds like they used for the Xmas rush.
OP, look on this as an opportunity to find a better job and/or try for your baby.
I'm a firm believer when one door closes, another soon opens.
Good luck!

Lifeisabeach09 · 10/01/2020 21:46

Oh, and check out the £10 a day money threads. Might be handy for whilst your jobsearching and when you have baby.

Sparkle2020 · 10/01/2020 21:56

@Lifeisabeach09 ooh good idea!! Thank you x
