Does this sound like I’m being fired?

In a new job (hospitality). Manager has asked me to come in in an hour to speak to him. My hours were cancelled this week from 35 hours to 7 (!!!!) and when I asked why (in my interview I was promised a 35 hour contract but my online contract says this can be more or less depending on their needs which I hadn’t realised), he said head office said they were over staffed too often.

So if you got a message saying come into work in an hour for a talk would you assume you’re being cut? I’m not the last in, which is why I’m confused because hospitality seems to be last in first out. Only been there a month though.

So sorry @Sparkle2020 that sounds so very unfair. Hoping the next job treats you better.

Rhumatoidwarrior88 · 09/01/2020 17:52

It's January as a ex chef this conversation will be the discussion on need . Quieter month may mean less staff needed but will be needed Feb on wards . Good luck

ssd · 09/01/2020 17:53

Awful. I'm so sorry op.

Likethebattle · 09/01/2020 17:53

Unfortunately common. Happened to my friend when she was employed by a new Tesco superstore. They over staffed then looked to see what was actually needed once the store settled down. We all wrote letters saying how we’d been to the store and were impressed. One staff member particularly stood out (our friend) and she was a major asset to them yada yada...

I hope you find something else really quickly.

DrDreReturns · 09/01/2020 17:53

Good luck op

perfectstorm · 09/01/2020 17:59

Bastards, because it sounds like they wanted experienced, committed staff for Christmas, and not temps who had no investment in doing a professional job, even though they weren't planning to keep you on afterwards. So sorry, OP. Hope you find somewhere better soon.

ssd · 09/01/2020 18:01

If its any consolation op, when I worked in hospitality, the ones whose faces fitted were the drunks, the arse kissers, the lazy gets and the swearers. Hospitality seems to attract folk who can't get work elsewhere.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 09/01/2020 18:02

Sounds like you're better off without them.

annualleavepurchase · 09/01/2020 18:03

That's shit op.

They may be letting some of the others go as well.

Fr0g · 09/01/2020 18:05

Sorry to hear that; it sounds as if they increased staffing for the Christmas period - either because they were busier, or anticipating existing staff would be unreliable - or to give existing time more time off.

Any possibility of going back to your previous employer?
Even if just short term while you look around.

TheMustressMhor · 09/01/2020 18:09

Sorry OP. They sounds like complete bastards.

justasking111 · 09/01/2020 18:16

Oh god January a terrible month in hospitality. I think it is nothing personal just trimming the budget.

VenusTiger · 09/01/2020 18:17

More likely to be redundancy than being fired.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 09/01/2020 18:19

@VenusTiger she'd been there a month

Ferretyone · 09/01/2020 18:22

Although you are new there is a possibility that this could be construed as "wrongful dismissal" for which you can take action without any limit on time served in post.

If you can contact ACAS they may be able to advise. On the other hand it may be better to negotiate for a good reference and money!

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/01/2020 18:25

Why do they never fire the hungover/late ones?.

Justaboy · 09/01/2020 18:26

Good old bad old brit management strikes again:(

steff13 · 09/01/2020 18:28

I’m just so confused why they would pick me as I’m never late, I’m never hungover etc and 3 of my colleagues are either late every shift, hungover or drunk at work.

Could it just be a last in, first out thing? Were you the last one hired?

NearlyOutedMyself · 09/01/2020 18:29

Sorry to hear that but contact some agencies tomorrow to get the ball rolling on new work.

WitchesGlove · 09/01/2020 18:30

Can you name and shame the company?

I’d write them a terrible review on the indeed website, and then google reviews, and get all my family and friends to do the same.

Soon they won’t have a business!

justasking111 · 09/01/2020 18:32

My DS cannot understand why the hungover/skiving ones do not get fired he gets the whats app emergency message can you come in today. The head chef is boffing one waitress, that he says he can understand but the rest??

WitchesGlove · 09/01/2020 18:34

Justasking-

It will be either due to poor management or the hungover ones are massive arselickers

Drum2018 · 09/01/2020 18:37

@VenusTiger hardly if she's only been there a month.

hidinginthenightgarden · 09/01/2020 18:38

Sounds like you are too sensible OP. In the pub world, the fun, free and fancy ones are more attractive as they bring in the punters.

TabbyStar · 09/01/2020 18:42

Last in first out is dodgy on the basis of age discrimination so companies tend not to use it anymore.
