Does this sound like I’m being fired?

In a new job (hospitality). Manager has asked me to come in in an hour to speak to him. My hours were cancelled this week from 35 hours to 7 (!!!!) and when I asked why (in my interview I was promised a 35 hour contract but my online contract says this can be more or less depending on their needs which I hadn’t realised), he said head office said they were over staffed too often.

So if you got a message saying come into work in an hour for a talk would you assume you’re being cut? I’m not the last in, which is why I’m confused because hospitality seems to be last in first out. Only been there a month though.

Hope it is not what you fear

TheRealShatParp · 09/01/2020 17:34

Sorry, just realised it’s a new job.

Patroclus · 09/01/2020 17:39

I dont think so, more like they want to rearrange hours and do some training/signing stuff.

Brenna24 · 09/01/2020 17:39

Yikes too late for advice but good luck

latheritup · 09/01/2020 17:39

Good luck OP

AlwaysThinkingOfNames · 09/01/2020 17:39

Unfortunately, if the other people have been in the job for a longer time, they are harder to sack, so if you are the newest, and still in the probation period, it's much simpler. it's not much to do with your job performance, but the chances of them committing r being accused of unfair dismissal.

IncrediblySadToo · 09/01/2020 17:39

They sound so Mickey Mouse - they might be offering you a managers job 🤞🏼

If not I hope you can find something to replace it quickly!

& good luck with TTC - don’t forget to enjoy the trying!

EstuaryBird · 09/01/2020 17:40

Good luck. Waiting to hear when you get back.

Sparkle2020 · 09/01/2020 17:40

Yeah I’ve been cut off. “It’s January and we don’t need you” grand thanks :/ fucked now

How did the meeting go? Hope you haven't lost your job. If you have, then don't take it to heart, use the experience in a positive way and don't accept a job from now on, where they can't guarantee you a fixed number of hours per week. Good luck whatever happened Flowers

Lordfrontpaw · 09/01/2020 17:41

Classy... well it sounds as if they are in the merde so just as well you won’t be around.

Toothypegg · 09/01/2020 17:41

I'm sorry Flowers

You poor thing. I'm so sorry.

WheresMyChocolate · 09/01/2020 17:44

Clearly they don't have a clue what they're doing so try to console yourself with the fact you're too good for them. I hope you find a decent employer soon.

Inliverpool1 · 09/01/2020 17:44

I hope they paid you for the hour

LouLouLoupee · 09/01/2020 17:45

Having worked in hospitality if your not drunk or hungover they probably don’t think you work well with the rest of the team.
I’ve worked in places where it’s practically expected to drink while working. If you are planning on children I’d advise on getting out that industry ASAP. This practice of hiring in busy periods and firing in quieter one is incredibly common.

forgivemeimnew · 09/01/2020 17:45

I’m sorry sparkle Flowers

Butchyrestingface · 09/01/2020 17:45

When did you start? And did you leave another 35 hour job to go to that one? Flowers

Awful behaviour from them.

CassidyStone · 09/01/2020 17:47

Oops, cross-posted. Shit, that's rough. Pick yourself up and dust yourself down and get yourself back out there.

My DD had to go through a gruelling set of interviews, including an online intelligence test, and a group interview with various role-play scenarios, to be offered a job in a high street fashion store. She was taken on in the last week of November and told she was surplus to requirements the first week of January. It seemed like a colossal waste of time and she was so upset. She wasn't told at any time it was only a seasonal job. Since then, she's insisted on knowing whether any position she has applied for is a permanent one. She's been working for the same company now for almost 5 years.

Hold your head high and don't take it personally. There are better places to work.

UnexpectedItemInTheShaggingAre · 09/01/2020 17:47

They sound like wankers

livefornaps · 09/01/2020 17:48

So so sorry. Bunch of arseholes. Don't let the bastards get you down

Allthecandles · 09/01/2020 17:49

Ah sorry about that, that sucks. Did they also get rid of the people you said were often late? Did you ask why you instead of them?
Do you have an idea of other companies you can apply for positions in?

AllergicToAMop · 09/01/2020 17:49

I’m not the last in, which is why I’m confused because hospitality seems to be last in first out.

It's usually the one who they don't want for any given reason. Too slow when serving, can't get the menu right, not as good with customers as they think. And these are usually the things people don't realise about themselves but others see. Or simply they just don't like the person as much as others.

AllergicToAMop · 09/01/2020 17:50

Oh I haven't seen the update. Sorry. You will find better. If you are looking now you will at least know there are hours and extra when it gets busy. Good luck!
