Car costs are astronomical

Been looking into the costs of buying a new car (not brand new) and it all just seems so unrealistic and out of reach!
Aibu or is there some secret I'm missing? Lol

I've been offered 0% finance but you do need a substantial deposit

I bought a skoda fabia on finance when they were offering 0% interest and a dealer contribution of £1000. I chopped in a car valued at £500 and it costs me £166 a month. I love it.

I agree with you OP! Recently had a broken car and repair would cost more than value of car. Looked around for finance or new/nearly new and realised that there is nothing much under £10k and that is for a small engine so harder driving on motorway. Ended up paying over £1k on repair as I weighed up the car has another 5 yrs in it and ultimately it was still the cheapest option. In other European countries cars hold their value much more but in UK seems that after 5-7 years ours are only worth scrap :-(. Couldn't bring myself to pay a finance deal after experience with debt in my past. Think the finance thing inflates the costs of new cars artificially and also HATE HATE HATE the actual process of car purchase - it's worse than double glazing. Am not going to trawl around random houses visit selling page cars on my own and dont wasn't to listen to the nonsense patter of dealership salesmen. A business who just had the actual real price advertised and you could just go in and buy would surely appeal to loads of people - especially women. The whole thing is just annoying.

I'm having similar thoughts as I contemplate a nearly new car having only driven cars that cost under £1k bought off eBay for the past ten years. I'm shocked at how the cost of cars have risen since everyone seems to have finance for them! My budget is only about £150 a month with no deposit other than my £200 piece of scrap.
