Regarding fully reclined seat at mealtime on a flight?

What exactly is seat reclining etiquette on long haul flights? I was on a long haul flight last weekend (on the way home from visiting my parents for Christmas), and just as meals and drinks had been handed out, the woman in front of me abruptly fully reclined her seat and decided to sleep, nearly spilling my meal and drinks into my lap in the process. I had to sit like a pretzel during the entire meal with her chair digging into my knees and my tray shoved right up next to my body about an inch below my boobs, awkwardly trying to cut up food without elbowing the person next to me in the face. It wasn’t late at night, maybe 7pm. She stayed that way for the remainder of the flight, even after she had been told to put her seat upright for landing 7 hours later.

Now, I realise that some discomfort is to be expected in steerage class on flights, and I understand someone wanting to recline a bit to sleep once food has been cleared away and cabin lights are down (though even then I try not to recline all the way as I know how uncomfortable it is for the person behind me). But casually shoving your seat all the way down right at meal time when space is obviously already tight just felt... well... rude.

AIBU to have been irked?

She was being an inconsiderate tit.

MatildaTheCat · 09/01/2020 14:02

YANBU but can’t say much because she’s within her rights to recline her seat. Unfortunately long haul flights in economy are uncomfortable. You just have to focus on the destination ( hopefully pleasant).

She was being an idiot. None of the seats should recline in cattle, there isn't the space and as soon as one starts you get a domino effect.

Butchyrestingface · 09/01/2020 14:05

She was being a tit. I am pro-seat reclining in all situations except meal times and landing. Wait till the antis get a swatch of your thread though...

Did you say something to her? I'd have been tempted to start kicking the back of her seat.

Damntheman · 09/01/2020 14:05

Flights I've been on usually ask passengers to put their seats upright for the meal. She was inconsiderate AF!

Honestly I hate it when people recline anyway, airplanes are now so small that reclining could put the person behind you in considerable discomfort for the whole flight. But I do understand that some people do need to recline for their own physical comfort as well. It's a difficult one, the blame lies entirely with the airline.

I would have said something for the meal, but not outside of meal times. Poor you, what a shitty flight!

baubled · 09/01/2020 14:06

It gives me full rage, you should have sat with your feet pushed in to their back as soon as you put your tray up 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hoik · 09/01/2020 14:07

You should have rang for the flight attendant, they'd have told her to sit it up.

Owlypants · 09/01/2020 14:09

That sounds like an awkward position to eat in, I would have been sending bits of my meal flying in her direction. At meal times seats should not be reclined

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 09/01/2020 14:09

Seat should be upright for food service. She was BU.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 09/01/2020 14:12

YANBU. Everyone should behave with consideration for others.

I have my seat upright for meals, during day flights and when I am awake. I will ask the person in front if they would mind putting the seat back up during a meal. I recline to sleep on night flights.

I have no problem with the person in front of me reclining provided they put it up at mealtimes.

Never had any problem on a flight, apart from an idiot behind me on the way to Las Vegas stretching his legs so far under my seat that he kept kicking me.

ohprettybaby · 09/01/2020 14:12

She was totally inconsiderate and I would have told asked her to put it back up until the meal and drinks were over. If she didn't I would call a flight Attendant and ask her to sort it for me.

Drum2018 · 09/01/2020 14:12

Why didn't you call a flight attendant? Or simply tell the woman you were eating. Happened once to me and the flight attendant told the person to straighten up their seat.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 09/01/2020 14:12

Ideally seats should reclineby the bottom moving forwards, then you won't impede on someone else's space. Failing that, only being able to recline at a set time.

HairyFloppins · 09/01/2020 14:13

The flight attendant should have asked them to put the seat up. If not I would have woke her and asked her.

2Rebecca · 09/01/2020 14:14

I think the fault is with the design of airline seats. The seats should slide rather than recline so that the person behind has the same amount of space and the recliner gets to lie back at the expense of their legs being squished forward. Then fewer people would do it. Agree that I'd have contacted the flight attendant if this was the first meal and she'd just done it

2Rebecca · 09/01/2020 14:15

Just saw Aroundtheworld had the same idea.

SerenDippitty · 09/01/2020 14:18

Selfish. Same thing happened to me. The two women in front of DH and me - they were in the emergency exit seats - reclined their seats as soon as they sat down and kept them that way for the whole of the 7 hour flight.

Lulualla · 09/01/2020 14:22

Why didn't you do something at the time? Call an attendant or speak to her.

nornironrock · 09/01/2020 14:24

A simple tap on the shoulder, and a request to put the seat up whilst food and drink are consumed normally does the trick. I tend to find that anyone will put it back up once they realise how much of a knob they are being (and you've pointed it put politely).

Anyone reclining in front of me on a short haul flight gets continually kicked in the back though - no mercy.

Linguaphile · 09/01/2020 14:25

Genius idea about a sliding recline system!

I didn’t have the guts to complain Blush, though I should have. I did get in one swift kick to the back of her seat just after we landed, and she immediately put the seat up, so at least I have the satisfaction of having communicated a bit of my annoyance. Grin

last time I flew long haul (admittedly 15 years ago) all passengers were required to put their seats upright for mealtimes.

I definitely wouldn't have allowed her to land in the reclined position, as that would have created a danger for you, rather than just an irritation.

Next time (and there will be a next time), call in reinforcements.

atomicblonde30 · 09/01/2020 14:29

Can’t believe she didn’t put her seat up, that’s mega rude.

I’ve been woken up before to put mine up for meal times (which obviously I did straight away) that’s really frustrating that she didn’t consider her surroundings.

PhoneLock · 09/01/2020 14:30

It may depend on the airline, but it is still the case in my very recent experience. They can be quite insistent. I'm not sure what they would do if a passenger was asleep though.
