Regarding fully reclined seat at mealtime on a flight?

What exactly is seat reclining etiquette on long haul flights? I was on a long haul flight last weekend (on the way home from visiting my parents for Christmas), and just as meals and drinks had been handed out, the woman in front of me abruptly fully reclined her seat and decided to sleep, nearly spilling my meal and drinks into my lap in the process. I had to sit like a pretzel during the entire meal with her chair digging into my knees and my tray shoved right up next to my body about an inch below my boobs, awkwardly trying to cut up food without elbowing the person next to me in the face. It wasn’t late at night, maybe 7pm. She stayed that way for the remainder of the flight, even after she had been told to put her seat upright for landing 7 hours later.

Now, I realise that some discomfort is to be expected in steerage class on flights, and I understand someone wanting to recline a bit to sleep once food has been cleared away and cabin lights are down (though even then I try not to recline all the way as I know how uncomfortable it is for the person behind me). But casually shoving your seat all the way down right at meal time when space is obviously already tight just felt... well... rude.

AIBU to have been irked?

Which airline has seats that recline more than 1/2 of an inch and would make any difference at all to the person behind?

Singapore Airlines recline more than that. I've flown with them a lot and it isn't a problem other than at mealtimes. Actually, it's not a problem then either because you will get asked to pull your seat upright if they are serving the person behind you.

VenusOfWillendorf · 09/01/2020 16:28

I fly a fair bit, and usually the flight attendant asks the person in front to put up their seat when they are handing out the trays. If they don't, or if they recline after the food has been handed out, I ring the bell and ask the flight attendant. Just ask - it's rarely an issue.
Get an exit row/bulk head seat if possible, or failing that, at least an aisle seat makes it easier for the cabin people to see your predicament. Outside of meal times, reclining is pretty much fair game on long flights.

One of the few good things about Ryanair - no seat recline feature!

britinnyc · 09/01/2020 16:37

Part of the issue sometimes is the ridiculous times they seem to think people want to eat. On the later overnights from NYC to London the flight leaves at 11 and you have about 6 hours to sleep. People recline and go to sleep after takeoff but the airlines seem to think people want a meal at 1am which is ridiculous and it becomes annoying for people to have to wake up and unrecline when it is basically the middle of the night.

victoriashleigh I might agree with you for a 7 hour flight, but for an 11 or 12 hr flight you definitely need to be able to recline, but do it politely and never at mealtimes. The last time I flew to Singapore (with BA) the seat only did full recline or fully upright, no part way option, and then you needed to physically pull the seat back up because the spring had gone. Just another reason not to fly with BA (no longer the worlds favourite airline, but possibly the least favourite one).

Whatsitthingy · 09/01/2020 16:44

Cabin crew will politely request that a recliner sits the seat up during the meal if you can't/won;t for some reason.

FreshOrangeClementine · 09/01/2020 16:44

Of course you should have asked a steward to help you and get her seat in an upright position again.
Or you should haVe damn well kicked that seat, gently of course, until she took the hint.
You could have been soaked/ burnt/ covered in food
I would have exclaimed very loudly

NailsNeedDoing · 09/01/2020 16:45

Obviously seats should be upright for meal times, and take off and landing of course, but any time around that, it’s fine to recline seats. They are made to recline for a reason.

I never understand why people get so worked up about people in front of them reclining seats when they have no reason to. It doesn’t bother me at all if the person in front reclines, I’m happy they’re more comfortable. The PP that expected the person in front not to recline because they were travelling with a baby, I find that very selfish. One persons choice to fly with a baby on their lap shouldn’t impact anyone else’s comfort or right to recline at the appropriate times.

Start to gag and frantically mutter that you cant find the sick bag. They're up like a Jack in the Box, every time.

tillytrotter1 · 09/01/2020 16:52

The crew should ask for reclined seats to be moved to upright during meals service. If the person in front of me is reclined all the way back I do find it necessary to get up and down a lot, using their seatback to get out wedge-shaped.

MiniCooperLover · 09/01/2020 16:55

We were flying back from Orlando on an overnight flight in Oct and at the the start of the dinner a mum came out of 1st and reclined both her kids and then went back to 1st! The food on the tray of guy next to me and me nearly went flying! The cabin crew came straight over and put them back into upright and said no not during meals. She was v put out when she eventually came back and saw them upright.

2020newme · 09/01/2020 17:00

KILL THEM!!!

StarlightLady · 09/01/2020 17:05

Another time ask the cabin crew to intervene, they may decline to do so but it’s worth a go. It worked for me when travelling to Singapore recently.

Mlou32 · 09/01/2020 17:06

I used to be cabin crew and I would have asked the passenger in front to put their seat in the fully upright position during mealtime. It is airline regulation to have the seats upright during take off and landing.

On a personal note, I always turn around and ask the person behind if they would mind if I reclined. Yes, my seat may have the recline feature however for some people ie my 6ft 5inch partner, it can cause a lot of discomfort if they seat is fully reclined.

I think in general, society would be a much happier place if a there was a little more consideration for others.

maddy68 · 09/01/2020 17:16

You can still eat even if the seat in front is reclined. They are designed that way ! She's as entitled to sleep as you are to eat.

maddy68 · 09/01/2020 17:19

I fly long haul regular for work, they always book me in cattle class and I jump time zones and need to be alert when I land as I'm whisked straight off to meetings I need my sleep (I'm sorry but my seat is reclined asap)

DishingOutDone · 09/01/2020 17:23

She's as entitled to sleep as you are to eat - she's definitely entitled .... Hmm

Pinkyyy · 09/01/2020 17:25

YABU to just sit there and say nothing.

NoCleanClothes · 09/01/2020 17:25

She actually isn't if sleeping requires her to make it impossible for OP to eat (most airlines specifically ask you to put your seat upright during meals).

I think this depends on the plane. The last time I tried to eat behind a reclined person the drinks on my tray were too tall to allow the tray to be properly on the table. Other times I’m sure I’ve had no problem.

If you’re using your reclined seat to sleep I would have no problem with that, even during a meal really. It’s the people who recline while eating that are really being inconsiderate.

My dd couldn't last year on a crappy Virgin airbus. Her tray kept sliding off the table. Maybe some planes are better than others.

ptumbi · 09/01/2020 17:42

It’s the people who recline while eating that are really being inconsiderate. - I had someone in front of me who reclined as soon as he could, and KEPT IT THERE even during his own meal! He just leaned forward (off the seatback) to eat his meal, leaving me with his headrest in my face as I ate. The cabin crew could do nothing.

I made sure I trapped his hair every time I hauled on his seatback to get up. I couldn't get out otherwise, of course Grin

DickDewy · 09/01/2020 17:55

I hate people. I’d have asked her to wait until after the meal, selfish twit.

Notthetoothfairy · 09/01/2020 18:13

@AlwaysThinkingOfNames BA economy seats recline 5 inches.

Starlink · 09/01/2020 18:15

That's why I always fly first or business away from the plebs.
