To get a Sholley

DecomposingRat · 07/01/2020 20:38

I keep seeing these and think how handy they look, I live five minutes from a supermarket and could pick up a decent amount of shopping without a car with one. But I am early 40s and all the sholley owners appear to be 70+ and the sholleys are tartan. Would it be strange to get one and has anyone relatively young got experience of one?

I have a folding pull along one from habitat - had it 15 years already so i was just about 30 when i got it... lived 15 minutes from a supermarket - no car no buses...

love it

hussandchips56 · 08/01/2020 08:29

I first got one when I was pregnant, lived 2 miles from the nearest bus stop and no car. It got put in the cupboard for a few years. It came out again when the DC no longer needed prams or buggies. So useful to take to the beach or park with all the picnic and kids paraphernalia. Also brilliant for a walk to the library with all our books.

I then just carried on using one. Have been teased and laughed at by colleagues over the years but I don't care. I'm now early 60s so I suppose it's ok for me to use it now.

My latest one I got while on holiday in France, it's got zips down the sides so can make it bigger if I get carried away when shopping. They do seem to have nicer ones in Europe, but then again more people, of all ages, seem to use them there.

I have a pull along one. Fabulous on holiday for putting everything in to go to the pool or beach. Everyone mocked me when I got it but they love it now that they don't have to carry all their things.

Damntheman · 08/01/2020 08:46

I've had a pull along once since I was 22 :) Go for it! It makes shopping without a car so much easier.

Quite common here in London to see all sorts of people including the young and hip with one given fewer people have cars.

Mine is metallic leopard print.

Carrying stuff keeps you strong and fit

GloriaMumsnet · 08/01/2020 10:09

Hi everyone, we'd really like this to get back on track so if the personal attacks could stop, that would be great! Flowers

GertiMJN · 08/01/2020 10:48

I'd hazard a guess that carrying awkward, heavy stuff could cause more back problems than add to fitness Vulpine

I am really baffled by the "wouldn't be seen dead with one" brigade.

It makes no sense for it to be "ok" to wheel a laptop case, brief case or hand luggage case but not something to carry shopping in Confused

How odd to be at the mercy of image.

VaguelySensible · 08/01/2020 16:00

Walking keeps you strong and fit, too. So if it's a choice between driving and walking with your funky Heel Porsche, which is better? 🤔

I've seen these in Paris. Very popular among the yummy mamans there I believe. If I still lived in a city I think I'd be tempted.

maggienolia · 08/01/2020 16:23

My DM has two - they're called Dotty and Henry.
Go for it - why not?

The80sweregreat · 08/01/2020 16:24

When my mum had one people hated them , but my parents didn't have a car and she couldn't lug , so it was a god send for her to cart back things from the shops! They held loads of food and made life easier ; only came in tartan back then. They were very sturdy.

I'm glad they have found a trendy niche market now as I was fond of my mums old one and they are practical. Better than plastic carriers too , so they were doing their bit long before the 5 p charges come in ( and didn't own a car)

littlepaddypaws · 08/01/2020 16:25

i have a pull along ds calls it my pensioner trolley Grin i told him when he can carry the amount of shopping that the trolley does then he can take the piss ! he's not accepted the challenge yet Smile

IrmaFayLear · 08/01/2020 16:30

I would be delighted to use a sholley-type item if it were manoeuverable (sp?).

I have had bags on wheels, but where I live it is quite hilly and they are a bit useless, as they pull you down the hill or drag behind and get scuffed. And sholleys seem quite heavy and difficult to lift up steps (especially when full).

Does anyone know of a (modern-looking) wheeled shopping conveyance that fits the bill?

Want2beme · 08/01/2020 16:34

Clevererthanyou Grin, that's very good!

The80sweregreat · 08/01/2020 16:34

I can imagine they are a bit heavy to lift onto train carriages or buses if your not fully fit , but still easier then heavy bags / carrier bags.
I work in a primary school and see teachers with them for all the books / laptops etc.
They are a good invention.

stripeypillowcase · 08/01/2020 16:36

irma would this fit the bill?

ptumbi · 08/01/2020 16:50

I’m sorry OP. In your early 40s I think it’s too soon. - well aren't you the good little sheep Hmm?

My fabulous friend has a shocking-pink, cow-print one; I'd love to know where she got it!

I got one for my DP - I thought it would help him with his Lidl shop, so he didn't have to take the car, shopping for 1. So Eco as well as useful.

IrmaFayLear · 08/01/2020 16:53

Oh, yes, stripeypillowcase, I like those! In fact my dn has one of those to carry her books in at school in Europe. You have to carry all your books backwards and forwards every day there, even in primary school, and trolleys have taken over from the backpack.

IrmaFayLear · 08/01/2020 16:55

Hmmmph, just seen that the carrying apparatus is 99e on top of the price of the bag. Do they do knock-off ones?!

inwood · 08/01/2020 17:13

I want one. I'm 35. Will save on all the plastic bags that I'm sending to landfill atm,

Sewrainbow · 08/01/2020 17:18

I was on about getting one these the other day but dh took the p as I'm only in my 40s

WeirdCatLady · 08/01/2020 17:22

I’ve had one for a few years, don’t use it very often as I’ve got a car though. Mine is blue with big white polka dots 😍

Buyitinbamboo · 08/01/2020 18:47

I'm 27 and contemplated getting one last year but had another baby so I can use the pram for now, I'll definitely get one when DS is out of a pram now I've seen you can get ones that go upstairs
