To get a Sholley

DecomposingRat · 07/01/2020 20:38

I keep seeing these and think how handy they look, I live five minutes from a supermarket and could pick up a decent amount of shopping without a car with one. But I am early 40s and all the sholley owners appear to be 70+ and the sholleys are tartan. Would it be strange to get one and has anyone relatively young got experience of one?

Goddamn it now I want a sholley!!!

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 07/01/2020 21:47

They aren’t hugely unusual up here where I live in the Highlands. Most people drive but we are a large village with a thriving high street and a supermarket on the edge so often convenient to walk. Lots of people of a wide range of age groups pull them along regularly.

GertiMJN · 07/01/2020 21:50

ArchMemory I'd love to know your judging criteria for working out the appropriate age for wheeled items...

Wheeled laptop cases..?

Wheeled brief cases ...?

Wheeled luggage ...?

In my world, if it helps you transport what you need transporting, then use it!!

CruCru · 07/01/2020 21:54

This is mine. I’m 41 (but got it in my late thirties). It is super useful for things like sports day and the last day of term when the children bring all their art and exercise books home.

CarrotBarrot · 07/01/2020 21:59

Lots of 'trendy' ones available on our local market ; although I prefer a rucksack for handsfree.

For those objecting to the word, my grandma had one twenty years ago and Sholley is a brand name.

2020yeah · 07/01/2020 22:00

I'm 38 and was thinking just this week I might buy one. My DC go through milk like nobody's business, its heavy to carry and DC2 won't be in a pushchair for very much longer.

MissMoogle · 07/01/2020 22:08

I've loved trolleys on wheels (what my gran called it when I was a kid) since my very young gran had one. I have my own personal one sitting in my front hall, I use it when I'm forced to do a large shop in the local shop in inclement weather etc. I also have an old fashioned wicker shopping basket that I seriously need to use more! You are never too young to have one, and think of all the bags for life you will save on. In fact, I'm thinking about getting a second one, one for each hand

BlankTimes · 07/01/2020 22:10

@PigeonPie

Just wish it had a seat on!

This one has!

There are a few others with seats on that site too

Vulpine · 07/01/2020 22:33

I hate them. Get a back pack or a bike

PigeonPie · 07/01/2020 22:41

Thanks @BlankTimes Smile I don't tend to use it as much now the DSs are older, but I also needed one I could push and lean on as I'd fall over pulling one!

My Sholley will do me until it falls apart - which will probably be in front of lots of people I know when I'm doing a huge trip to the bottle bank Grin

HeresMe · 07/01/2020 23:01

Call it a shopping trolley ffs, use it if you want but sholley is beyond a wanky name.

Tomselleckhaskindeyes · 07/01/2020 23:06

I have one. I’ve had mine 20 years. I carry a lot of folders for my job. I also have a bad back so a necessity.
Think of all the carrier bags saved.

Fr0g · 07/01/2020 23:15

sholleys are the square one's with four wheels - they do look a bit frumpy! The two wheeled ones come in a lot more trendy styles than tartan - I bought my sister one for her 60th birthday, white with cartoon dogs on.
I think she was fuming at first but actually finds it really useful - she'd just moved to a small town, rather than being v rural, so was able to walk to the shops rather than drive.

tobee · 07/01/2020 23:19

I've got a beautiful one! It's very useful for walking home with the shopping when I don't want to drive.

Anyone who says they are for old people are being ridiculous!

Dementedmagpie · 07/01/2020 23:20

I've seen some funky design ones but I just can't bring myself to consider getting one (yet) I am scared by my DM having a really frumpy one when she was my age!! (40 ish)

Dementedmagpie · 07/01/2020 23:21

*scarred

LellyMcKelly · 07/01/2020 23:28

Very environmentally friendly. I have one and I’ve seen quite a few students use them too. I got mine in Ikea, though don’t use it as much as I should. They’re not as big as you’d think. Good for 2-3 bags worth of shopping. My 14yo is mortified but always wants a go when she knows she’s not going to meet anyone she knows.

friskybivalves · 07/01/2020 23:40

They are very popular in Paris. People here have ones with three little wheels on each side that help you kind of click clack up stairs without having to have it up the steps. All the rage in the markets and bakeries.

friskybivalves · 07/01/2020 23:43

Et voilà. Grin

To get a Sholley
ElizaCBennett · 07/01/2020 23:47

This is really weird. I have just been considering getting a shopping trolley! I plan to use it to walk to the supermarket instead of driving.

I am 65 tho so can probably justify it on age alone tbh

NewtonPulsifer · 07/01/2020 23:52

I was reading these and deciding I want one too, then I remembered I have one! It’s tucked away in the garage, funky patterned one from Ikea. I’m going to take it out for a whirl and nod sagely at anyone I suspect might be a Mumsnetter.

HomeEdRocks18 · 07/01/2020 23:52

I bought mine from IKEA for £7. Brilliant for doing the food shop. I only stopped using it because my daughter decided to climb inside it and broke the bottom of it :(

TheFoxAndTheMole · 07/01/2020 23:59

Sholley is a brand name. Much coverted by my mum and her mates (in their 70s). Mum's is blue btw not tartan.

The two wheeled shopping bags are used by younger people much more than the big square Sholleys, if you decided to get one of those in one of the bright funky designs you'd fit right in. But I'm a big believer in not giving a toss what oooft people think of you if you'e not harming them, so if you want a big ass sholley, then go for one!

MistyCloud · 08/01/2020 00:00

@DecomposingRat Go for it! Smile
