To get a Sholley

DecomposingRat · 07/01/2020 20:38

I keep seeing these and think how handy they look, I live five minutes from a supermarket and could pick up a decent amount of shopping without a car with one. But I am early 40s and all the sholley owners appear to be 70+ and the sholleys are tartan. Would it be strange to get one and has anyone relatively young got experience of one?

I bought one from a local shop, first day I used it a women passed me and said snap because she had the same one...she must have been at least 80Grin

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 08/01/2020 00:03

The real Shollies as opposed to just a shopping trolley are great. You can get them in different sizes ( the large is massive and I could get a months shop in it) different fabrics, with or without seats and they even do a pet carrier one.
See quite a few around my way with a diverse age group using them.

PumpkinP · 08/01/2020 00:04

They seem pretty common on MN which I find strange as I only ever see elderly people with them IRL and I live in London. I haven’t seen anyone young with them and if I got one I know I would be laughed at by people I know! My mum won’t even use one and she’s in her 60s , she uses a suit case instead.

BroomstickOfLove · 08/01/2020 00:06

I have a Rolser trolley and I love it. It's so convenient and practical and beautiful. It's my second trolley - I've had one since I was in my late twenties.

m00rfarm · 08/01/2020 00:10

A sholley is the one you push. Not the one you pull.

weehoo · 08/01/2020 00:16

I used to see an older lady locally who had one like this. I thought she was the epitome of cool.

Question is though, do you push or pull it?

Heel porsche 😂
I’m in early 40’s and have one. It’s bliss not to carry heavy bags around

GrimDamnFanjo · 08/01/2020 00:35

I have one with a nyc design on it. Very handy!

melj1213 · 08/01/2020 00:47

I just turned 30 and I love mine - I've had one since I lived in Madrid in my early 20s because nobody drives and it's so much handier to get shopping home on the bus/metro or just walking, when you just have to pull a trolley rather than wrangle 6 carrier bags.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 08/01/2020 00:58

God there’s nothing shameful about being disabled or getting older or simply not being strong enough to carry a big pile of shopping. Why on earth would you laugh at someone for using equipment that is helpful?

So many people are basically dickheads. Use your sholley and ignore them.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 08/01/2020 01:00

I need to replace mine, it’s in the midst of the death throes that come to all trollies. I think I may pick a replacement up in ikea next time I’m there.

ParanoidGynodroid · 08/01/2020 01:09

I love those wicker ones! I want one. I’m only 50 though... wonder if I’m old enough!

itstrue · 08/01/2020 01:16

I have one (mid 40's). I do get a bit of stick for it but I live down the road from a supermarket and plastic bags are illegal here (NZ). It's made my life easier!

Just make sure you get one with big wheels and a sturdy base otherwise it will tip over all the time. And my first one had silly little ties that fastened the bag to the frame. I overloaded it and it fell apart!

Newname1978 · 08/01/2020 02:38

I'm understanding from this thread
Hoppa - cool
Sholley - uncool
Is that right?

Newname1978 · 08/01/2020 02:41

Oh you can get them in ikea?

echt · 08/01/2020 06:02

A colleague who has for years pulled a sholley (no car) for shopping and work has fucked her hip and been told so by her doctor/physio. To be fair, its been years.

stripeypillowcase · 08/01/2020 06:29

They’re not as big as you’d think. Good for 2-3 bags worth of shopping.

the idea is to not use bags. if you stack carefully you can get a lot into a 30 l trolley.
plus one some styles you can easily stack bulky stuff on top.

Nodancingshoes · 08/01/2020 06:52

My nan has one - she is 94 and it helps her to walk along as well as carrying her shopping. I wouldn't get one - it would be a hard look to pull off 😂 but if you want one, go for it!

RhinestoneCowgirl · 08/01/2020 06:58

I've got a purple wheely bag, I'm 42. I've stopped driving so the trolley is really handy for shopping. I see quite a few people my age on the high street using them round here.

For longer journeys I also have bike panniers and a bike trailer.

I've been using one for donkeys years. I wouldn't be without it.
Why struggle.

Bluebobolink · 08/01/2020 07:08

The four wheeled ones are a bit strange, but the 2 wheelers are great, mine even folds. With my health issues I'd get too tired to carry more than a couple of bags but the trolley was great, could carry it folded up on the bus like a briefcase and then just unfold it when I had shopping to put in it. If it means you can walk to the shop rather than taking the car it makes perfect sense, go for it. I'm in my 40s but I'd not think amiss of anyone younger using one either. The only reason I've stopped using it as I'm not well enough to go out like that anymore.

Thank goodness for a common sense post @TinklyLittleLaugh Brew

I have a pull along one - I don't drive and it makes mad purchases from Aldi/Lidl so much easier Grin.

I never could figure out what you were meant to do with them while going around the shop though.

Then just this weekend I saw a woman going in to Lidl and she pulled down a little shelf on the bottom of the Lidl shopping trolley, and put her pull-along bag on that, with the handle on a hook at the top Shock .

I had no idea the little shelf even existed. It's like a child seat, but at the base of the trolly.

I won't have to worry about what anyone thinks of my pull-along shopper, because I'm going to get myself a reputation as the woman who goes around eyeing up the bottoms of supermarket trolleys from now on.

Maybe they all have the little shelf!?

VaguelySensible · 08/01/2020 07:21

'Heel Porsche' Grin

In my 40s I used to describe mine to sceptics as a 'top-loading Samsonite with all-terrain wheels'. And it most certainly is not tartan! It is cheerfully bright and spotty.
