To the woman who, as I crossed the road in the rain in front of her car at a junction, took the time to shout out of her window 'This isn't a crossing you know!'

I just feel awful about the 1.5 seconds I delayed her massively massively important journey

Anyone else like to get a sincere apology off their chest?

I apologise for flipping the bird to the woman driver who slowed right down upon seeing me waiting on the pavement next to the kerb (I did NOT step out) to cross right opposite the bus stop with the bus coming and no cars coming on my side who proceeded to put her foot back down on the accelerator as soon as she saw me raise my hand in thanks and start to cross with my obviously injured heavily bandaged bad legs visible.

I further apologise for telling her to go fuck herself when, after nearly hitting me, she drove up the road, turned round at the island and came back to give me a mouthful of abuse in a tone you would not use on a dog for not walking the half a mile up the road to the nearest pedestrian crossing despite the fact I had visibly limited mobility at the time.

I forgot to thank her for her fake kind gesture.

Alwaysrainsonme · 07/01/2020 23:28

The OP was clearly determined to be dry or die, and I admire her spirt!

CatAndHisKit · 07/01/2020 23:30

I agree, OP. Drivers should be more generous to pedestrians, in bad weather especially, and e.g. if they were slowing down anyway before a junction. People are a lot more self-centred than they used to be.

SouthwarkSkaters · 07/01/2020 23:31

The carrier bag law is different in Wales. No one is exempt and all single use bags are charged, including paper bags.

NoCountry · 07/01/2020 23:31

Glad to hear you're thoroughly ashamed of yourself Bumpy Flowers

This woman was clearly just trying to advise you of the safest way to cross and if you couldn't walk to the nearest crossing you should have crawled there on your hands and knees.

THOU SHALT NOT IMPEDE THE TRAFFIC!

I apologise to the twat in the Corsa this evening for assuming they understood how “merge in turn” works. I also apologise for being able to stop quickly enough when they slammed on the brakes in front of me, I suspect they were disappointed...

Iamalltheyhavenow · 07/01/2020 23:41

I miss the old mumsnet

Me too, I was so looking forward to reading this thread......

bollocksybollocks · 07/01/2020 23:55

I'd like to apologise to the lovely men in the white van who approached my car under a narrow bridge when it was my right of way and then decided to just keep driving at me. I was of course more than happy to reverse up a narrow steep windy hill in the dark, then when I politely explained it was my right of way, it was such a joy to hear the passenger talk over me in order to make racist noises at my Chinese husband.

Topseyt · 07/01/2020 23:59

I faux-apologise to the arsewipe behind me approaching a roundabout this evening who seemed surprised when I paused to give way to traffic already on it and coming from my right.

You seemed to think I should just have pulled out regardless of them being very close and having right of way. It wouldn't have mattered if they had crashed into me, apparently.

Rosiesmydog · 08/01/2020 00:09

Well I’d like to offer sincere apologies to all the drivers that I’ve held up my hand to in a ‘please stop and let me cross because I’m getting soaked here‘ gesture.

This next apology is not traffic related. I apologise to all those who want to get angsty about traffic/pedestrian scenarios...

I sincerely apologise to the nice lady who shouted at my dog for sniffing her bush...

TinklyLittleLaugh · 08/01/2020 00:26

Highway Code rule 170: cars must give way to pedestrians who have started to cross at a junction.

PyongyangKipperbang · 08/01/2020 00:28

I would like to apologise to one of my customers for not understanding that Archimedes was wrong, wrong, wrong and that I should have taken the ice out of your ice bucket so that it wouldnt overflow when the ice melted.

GirlDownUnder · 08/01/2020 00:54

I sincerely apologise to the nice lady who shouted at my dog for sniffing her bush...

I see someone else has said it but just in case others have not read the full thread, pedestrians have the right of way as soon as they step on to the road.

If you are not ready for the odd pedestrian doing this you should not be driving.

CalishataFolkart · 08/01/2020 03:00

Dear @NoCountry

I am so, soooo sorry for existing when I should have remembered that you are soluble like a Berocca and I would cause you more damage than a ton of metal on wheels.

Lots of love,

The Rain

Daenerys77 · 08/01/2020 03:52

I am truly sorry for pointing out that rain is slightly dirty H2O, not hydrochloric acid.

I would also like to apologise for installing a rear-facing dash cam. It is clearly putting some motorists off their favourite sport of trying to drive up my exhaust.

HoppingPavlova · 08/01/2020 04:40

And how long does convention determine a person being soaked in the rain should wait oh wise one? While warm, dry drivers barge past, giving not a shit about the soaked person. If the road isn't going to be 'clear of traffic' any time soon because it's so busy?

The easy answer is until the road is clear of traffic at a distance close enough to hit you when doing the speed limit and without having to slow or stop to avoid hitting you. This is not a difficult concept, not sure what you fail to understand. The fact it’s raining doesn’t mean you get a priority pass to barge in front of moving vehicles so you don’t get wet. It doesn’t work on a wet/dry priority system. Rules don’t change with the weather. In fact in the rain you need to allow an even greater clearance distance as cars take longer to slow and stop.

A thing I encountered several years back was two school kids looking to cross a busy road. Half the road was clear and the driver on the other side, seeing their predicament slowed to a stop and gestured them across. Unfortunately the person behind that car did not realise what was happening, presumed the person must have been stopping to turn right into a driveway and raced up on the left - with 2 kids right in front of them. I was ‘lucky’ enough to be at the bus stop waiting for my own school kids for that oneSad. May not make complete sense to you as I’m on the other side of the world. The driver who came up on the left was in the wrong but so were the 2 kids and the driver who stopped and gestured them across ‘being nice’ now has to live with this. I understand kids will be kids but you claim to be a grown woman, albeit one that hasn’t caught into road and pedestrian rules as yet. Sometimes waiting 30mins (minimum) in pouring rain is ultimately worth it.

justcly · 08/01/2020 04:43

@Iamalltheyhavenow:

It could still be fun. We could take back control of the thread. #threadxit

And, since I am here, can I make the following apology on behalf of my DS who thoughtlessly put his face in the way of someone's massive backpack on a crowded train last week. When said individual did that swinging back and forth thing (why do backpack wearers do that?) they knocked DS's glasses off, which of course he could not retrieve, and which someone else then stood on. Apologies on behalf of our entire family, backpack wearer. I understand that you were berated by half the carriage. Maybe next time remember you have half a ton of crap on your back and stand the fuck still.

Walkaround · 08/01/2020 05:05

NoCountry - don’t you know it’s the law that when you are a pedestrian, you find all the car drivers to be selfish twats, but as soon as you get behind the wheel, you suddenly notice how obnoxious and dangerous all the pedestrians are? S.42 of the I’m Never In the Wrong and Have the Right to Lose My Temper Act 1963.

Walkaround · 08/01/2020 05:12

I also refer you to the I’m More Important than You Act of 2003.

Monty27 · 08/01/2020 05:18

I apologise to the the little fucker young guy who came out of a left hand street causing me to brake in busy traffic.
I can really not quite understand why you thought you should stop and reverse your bike using your legs to kick my wing mirror off. I hope it didn't delay your journey as clearly you were in a hurry

SantaHatHotTub · 08/01/2020 06:01

I apologise to all the dickheads on the roads nowadays who seem to resent the existence of other drivers. Especially the ones who are aggressive to me because I won’t race them and drive my sporty ish car safely.

@NoCountry I totally get why you feel the need to apologise for your terrible crime. Grin Your callous actions have clearly caused the poor driver considerable inconvenience and distress.....

Without trying to sound patronising though, please be careful doing this, there’s so many bad drivers out there nowadays that it’s possible they’d just run you over. Sad

NearlyOutedMyself · 08/01/2020 06:01

@HoppingPavlova, how awful.

Zeusthemoose · 08/01/2020 06:07

Why are people questioning why op had to walk across the road when cars were on it?? Confused Not all roads have pedestrian crossings so what on earth are you supposed to do....just stand there for hours waiting for a clear road? You go when there's a large enough and safe gap and cars should allow you to do so. That's perfectly normal.

Bl3ss3dm0m · 08/01/2020 06:48

I would like to sincerely apologise to all the people in supermarkets, department stores, and the large isles in shopping centres, who stop to chat to family and friends, then don't turn around and look, before backing into my powered wheelchair 😉
