Talking along with people

My mum and MIL and SIL all do this. They live in different places so it's not regional but is it A Thing?

Basically I will be talking to one of them and they will try to guess what I'm going to say and say it along with me. So they say the same words as me just a nanosecond behind, finishing off half my sentences with me.

I hate it! It makes me feel really stressed. And it's so weird.

Do other people do this? If you do can you tell me why?

And how can I stop it without being rude? Last time I asked my mum to stop it she was really hurt and said she didn't know she was doing it.

My mother does this and it drives me nuts. Pause for a nanosecond and she dives in (often getting it wrong too). If you pull her up on it she says ‘I just feel like I have to hurry you up!’ Just bloody LISTEN!!

I absolutely know what you mean haha! I also have an older neighbor who does this all the time but she is a gem and I love her so it's forgiven Grin

If you want them to stop I think you should do it back to them. That's what got me to realise I was doing it and that it was annoying people.

I agree with pp, I think it's a confidence thing. I started doing it when I had low self esteem and wanted to seem involved in conversations and get people to like me. Now I'm more comfortable in myself I let conversation flow and just speak when I have something to contribute.
