To ask whether Glastonbury is worth it?

Friends asked us to try and get them Glastonbury tickets, I managed to get through and purchased tickets for myself and husband as well as I got a bit over excited at getting through! (Previously registered pre children!)
We’ve got a camper van ticket as well as really not keen on camping. Quotes for a camper van are £1300 so plus the tickets it’s £1800 before drink/food etc.
Thinking of returning the tickets and booking a nice weekend away for less money. Am I being old and boring? Is it really that amazing? Friends not going with us as they know others but I’m sure we will meet up with them if we go. We would be leaving DC with grandparents.
AIBU to return the tickets?

I'd only go if it was an experience I really wanted or a band/singer was on my wish lists and playing.
Honesty you don't sound like this is top of your interests so I'd spend the money on a short break.

KC225 · 07/01/2020 15:04

I went in 1999 pre husband and kids. There were 10 of us sharing various tents. We had such a brilliant time - we all have proper war stories from THAT Weekend. Totally worth it

Everythingnotsaved · 07/01/2020 15:04

Honestly, it’s bloody great fun! It’s the 50th and it’ll be amazing!!

caringcarer · 07/01/2020 15:09

If you are a late teen/early twenties you would find it amazing. It is about sharing the experience with friends, almost like a right of passage. Going as an older person is not the same. I would sell the tickets and go somewhere relaxing for a break.

NameChangeNugget · 07/01/2020 15:10

Had the best time there. If you go, you’ll get it.

Go!

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/01/2020 15:11

In my 20s when I used to get in for free and hang out backstage, yes. Now? Not a hope in hell.

Everythingnotsaved · 07/01/2020 15:11

@caringcarer I don’t think that’s true. Glasto has a hugely varied demographic and has as many older people as young’uns! I’m 47, went last year & i’m going again this year as I had a blast!! It’s a unique happy place!

ChilliandLemon · 07/01/2020 15:12

Go! I absolutely loved it.

It’s also really not just about the main stages. The site itself is huge and has so much to see and do. You can quite easily spend all those days there and not go near the main stages.

SpoonBlender · 07/01/2020 15:19

You can't get that impressive a holiday for £1800 tbh. I'd go.

loobyloo1234 · 07/01/2020 15:24

You have to go. Even just once. It's amazing. And so much more than just a 'music' festival

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 07/01/2020 15:26

How much?! That is an insane amount of money for one weekend. There is no way I would pay that - you could have a week's holiday abroad for that.

Littleroundone · 07/01/2020 15:28

I would go but only I've never been able to get tickets or something else on.My DB goes every year and he's soon to be 49. He loves it as there is all ages there so not true about there being no older folks. Apparently the smaller stages are amazing too. He never really bothers with the headliners either.

soberfabulous · 07/01/2020 15:30

It's Diana Ross this year, YOU MUST GO!! She is incredible live.

FrankRattlesnake · 07/01/2020 15:33

If you’ve never been and have tickets for the 50th GO!

We volunteer and I have to make a decision about going in the next 2 weeks. We have a toddler so it changes the dynamic, but they have been tonfrstivals so it wouldn’t be a huge issue.

If our lo wasn’t coming there would be no question about attending!

Popuppippa · 07/01/2020 15:33

I know someone who works as part of the team setting up. He's been doing it for donkey's years and takes his whole family - his 3 kids have been going since they were babies. It's a really diverse gathering of people in every single way. I'd go.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/01/2020 15:33

Glasto has a hugely varied demographic of people that can afford the extortionate ticket prices.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 07/01/2020 15:34

It depends what you enjoy and what your outlook is. I absolutely adore Glastonbury and everything about it but then I’m a bit of an old hippy. You need to be able to go with the flow, enjoy yourself even if rains (because when it rains at Glastonbury it RAINS and even the driest ground turns to mud) and embrace all that’s alternative. It’s full on, it’s absolutely rammed in places and very different, IMO, even to other festivals. There will be some very strange people, quite a lot of drugs (no matter how much they say every year that drugs are as illegal at Glastonbury as anywhere else!) and pretty much an “anything goes” vibe.

If that sounds like your thing you’ll love it. I have known some who hated it so much they left after 2 days!

Everythingnotsaved · 07/01/2020 15:38

@MrsTerryPratchett it’s £250 for ticket and camping! I spent an extra £150 last year on food etc and took my own booze. Yes it’s expensive but doesn’t have to be extortionate if you camp & take your own booze

Everythingnotsaved · 07/01/2020 15:39

OP the other thing to think about is that it’s really hard to get tickets so this might be your only shot- it’s a good year to go for the 50th

Mockers2020Vision · 07/01/2020 15:43

It's on telly.

Camp in your living room.

MrsToothyBitch · 07/01/2020 15:49

I'd rather have the holiday. Doesn't have to be luxe but think you'd get more for your money.

DappledThings · 07/01/2020 16:01

I love festivals, going to a new one this year after 14 trips to 5 different ones. Kept going with small DC and still had a fab time.

Couldn't pay me to go to Glastonbury though. Just so massive. It must be a nightmare getting across the site and you must have to plan really carefully what you want to do so you have time to get there.

FizzyIce · 07/01/2020 16:06

How much?!
I’d be getting a refund but then standing in a muddy field getting piss thrown at me isn’t my idea of fun

EachandEveryone · 07/01/2020 16:06

Honestly as someone whos group failed miserably this year, I dont think I can face reading it.

Why didnt you pay to glamp it wouldve been half the price and much closer to the action.

You wont regret going. Theres nowhere quite like it. Take plenty of nice booze. The food is amazing. Pick out a couple of acts you really want to see but otherwise play in by ear.

We are in our fifties and have been at least ten times. Its fantasic.

Popuppippa · 07/01/2020 16:07

@MrsTerryPratchett the (older 40's/50's) people I know who go are not wealthy at all, they're actually on very low incomes. They just love Glasto and work in jobs aligned to the music industry.
