To ask whether Glastonbury is worth it?

Friends asked us to try and get them Glastonbury tickets, I managed to get through and purchased tickets for myself and husband as well as I got a bit over excited at getting through! (Previously registered pre children!)
We’ve got a camper van ticket as well as really not keen on camping. Quotes for a camper van are £1300 so plus the tickets it’s £1800 before drink/food etc.
Thinking of returning the tickets and booking a nice weekend away for less money. Am I being old and boring? Is it really that amazing? Friends not going with us as they know others but I’m sure we will meet up with them if we go. We would be leaving DC with grandparents.
AIBU to return the tickets?

I went pre kids. It was amazing and I would go again in a heartbeat though I'm told it's very different now, (it's 25 years since I've been). I would just camp though, I have a decent tent and thermorest.

Crunchymum · 07/01/2020 16:12

£1800 to see Taylor fecking Swift... not a chance in Hell.

loobyloo1234 · 07/01/2020 16:16
Hmm

I've never had piss thrown at me at Glastonbury - and i've never paid £1800 to see one artist there. Has anyone been on here saying don't go that has actually been to Glastonbury yet?

welshweasel · 07/01/2020 16:21

Do it!! It’s the most amazing week. I took my 55 year old husband for the first time last year and he thought it was amazing. Agree campervan is the best option though.

ChilliandLemon · 07/01/2020 16:22

Glastonbury certainly isn’t just for young people, they have a family field! All sorts of age ranges go.

Everythingnotsaved · 07/01/2020 16:22

@loobyloo1234 my thoughts exactly. Lots of assumptions about what it’s like Hmm

1moresurvey · 07/01/2020 16:23

Please stop saying it's the 50th Glastonbury! It's 50 years since the first very different gathering at worthy farm but it's NOT the 50th Glastonbury it's actually been held less than 40!

Boom45 · 07/01/2020 16:24

I wouldn't go now, I don't fancy it anymore at all, but I loved it in my teens and 20s. If it's your sort of thing it's amazing, if its not your sort of thing it could be a really miserable weekend - especially if it rains all weekend.
If you'd got regular (none camper) tickets I'd probably say go and you'll enjoy it but as you've got expensive tickets and you're unsure I'd probably return them and do something you're more excited about instead.

loobyloo1234 · 07/01/2020 16:25

@Everythingnotsaved

Granted its not for everyone Grin But at least talk facts if you're trying to dissuade the OP from going Smile

Basecamp65 · 07/01/2020 16:28

Im a season festival goer and been to Glastonbury numerous times - I guess do I think £500 for tickets is worth it? - absolutely

Do I think £1300 is worth it to avoid camping? No No no

I would ditch the camper van ticket and go for far less and have a blast.

£1300 could get the whole family a great time at another festival - in the campervan.

FizzyIce · 07/01/2020 16:29

@loobyloo1234 yep ,few years back and the guys next to us did have a cup of piss thrown at them .

FizzyIce · 07/01/2020 16:30

Oh I don’t need to “dissuade” anyone . She asked opinions and that’s what she’s getting ..

CluelessNewMama · 07/01/2020 16:31

I’ve been three times and have loved every one, and I’m definitely not someone who would ever choose to go camping otherwise.

There are plenty of people of all age groups and walks of life and there really is something for everyone. But you need to explore, it’s definitely not just about the main stages.

I didn’t realise the camper van tickets were so expensive though. I honestly think you might be better investing in a good tent and air mattress instead and saving the money on the camper van parking. The camper van park is also quite far away so you’ll spend ages walking backwards and forwards each day.

Hope you enjoy it if you do decide to go. The 50th is bound to be a great one!

Theroigne · 07/01/2020 16:34

Been there seen it done it several times now. I wouldn’t go near it nowadays unless I had access to my own loo and a bed tucked away from all the drunken twats tripping over my guy ropes. In other words I will only do it if I have access to a van / glamping tent. However I really can’t bring myself to pay thousands for it. So I don’t go anymore.

If you’ve never been op it is a good experience.

Theroigne · 07/01/2020 16:35

Clueless I think she’s referring to hire of the camper van. The ticket to the camper field is less than £100 IIRC.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/01/2020 16:36

Has anyone been on here saying don't go that has actually been to Glastonbury yet?

Not only have I been there, I've stood on the pyramid stage. I still think it's overpriced and I wouldn't go.

Theroigne · 07/01/2020 16:36

.... but yes both camper van fields are a long trek from the site and one is up a MASSIVELY steep hill. Plus you have to keep checking in and out of the gates which is a faff.

PineappleDanish · 07/01/2020 16:37

It has no appeal to me and I'd be spending the whole weekend moaning about the toilets, the camping and the showers, and imagining just how much of a better holiday I could have had elsewhere on the same cash.

Theroigne · 07/01/2020 16:37

Agree it’s overpriced.

EachandEveryone · 07/01/2020 16:39

I deffo would get rid of the campervan hire and see if theres any tents left at Worthy View or Tangerine Fields. The campervan fields are too far out.

VeniVidiVoxi · 07/01/2020 16:40

If you are fit and able to walk then I would go. You walk a squillion miles (approx) to see all the good bits. I don't mean it's not suitable for people with disabilities, they do quite well in providing paths and platforms, but my mum went at 58 just before a hip replacement op and it was tough on her. She did love it though.

Don't just go for the weekend, make the most of the ticket and go for as long as it allows. I've worked every time I've been and some of the most enjoyable times have been before everyone else descends. You can fill the excitement build (man). OK drugs and booze have helped in the past but I think I'd still enjoy it now that my tastes have mellowed. One massive caveat - friends make it! It's fine as a couple, but with the right people it's the best place on earth. There is glastonbury magic and you will be talking about it for the rest of your lives.

pigdogridesagain · 07/01/2020 16:46

I couldn't think of anything worse. But as you have paid just think of it as an experience, you never know you might love it .

SimonJT · 07/01/2020 16:50

I would go, I have been to the last four, last year I only managed to attend a half day and I was really gutted that I couldn’t do the whole weekend.

Bluewavescrashing · 07/01/2020 16:51

I went aged 19 when I was at uni. Loved it, had a great time but wouldn't go back now. Crowds, queues, dick heads everywhere.

If it's in your bucket list go for it. If it's not your thing avoid.

CoffeeConnoiseur · 07/01/2020 16:55

Went in 2014/15 - whichever the year was that the foo fighters had to cancel because Dave broke his leg.

I hated it.

It's massive, you can walk miles in a day. Unless you're at the front of the main stage all you can see is a sea of flags. You end up watching the band or artist on the big screens. And yes there is piss being thrown around, lots of it.

It's filthy, I mean like really filthy and I'm not talking mud, I'm taking lazy fuckers who will be standing one meter from a bin but drop their rubbish on the floor and walk away. Don't even get me started on the toilets.

Security, that's a joke. DH had to step in and forcibly remove an almost comatose drunk woman from two men who were carrying her back to their tent. Long story but security didn't give a crap. We got her to the nearest medical facility. Heard of loads of people's tents being rifled through while they were out.

The only thing that made it bearable for me was that we stayed in the yurt hotel village. Eye watering expensive. Oh and the food was good, we're not vegan but ate from the vegan food stalls every day. Really lovely fresh tasty food.

You couldn't pay me to go back.
