To ask for help with sitting room decor

I am very untalented when it comes to decor . So I need input! We have a chocolate brown sofa and a red sofa (red/burnt orange color). Blinds are brown and red stripes. Throws are beige/cream/brown. Cushions beige/red sofa material/tartan brown.

I want to buy a rug but can't find a nice one.
Would IBU to buy say a brown/mustard colour rug and add more cushions to the sofas in mustard or is that just too busy?

Or should I just keep looking for a brown/cream/red rug.

I probably should but maybe another colour would look nice instead of looking awful???

What colour are the walls? Painted or paper and is that plain or with a pattern?
Also, what is the rug lying on ?

Have you looked at Wayfair ? I got some nice rugs there and they have a sale on. 😁

Sorry, one other thing - can you get samples from a nearby shop? Or your local John Lewis to try or return?
That way you could try the brown/ mustard before you commit?

So you already have stripes and tartan in the room, right? I would go for a plain rug, probably, and stick to the same kinds of colours you already have. But it's hard to say whether it's too busy, because that will depend a LOT on the size of the room, the amount of furniture, the proportions of each colour and the amount of other stuff (pictures, TVs, plants etc etc) in there. Can you post some pictures of the room?

JaneDarcy · 05/01/2020 17:10

Sorry. Walls are painted light brown/cream. Floor is oak (?) Light wood.
I didn't mean to enable voting Blush

Thanks dreamers I'll check out Wayfair. And will check shops with return policies

Hard to visualise without a picture but I personally really like to have two main colours in a room with a pop of something vibrant as an accent colour. Have you tried searching pinterest to see rooms with that pallette? That may help you decide. You can always buy and take back if you dont love it in situ.

Could you Google image red/brown living room and take some inspiration from the results?

JaneDarcy · 05/01/2020 21:23

I don't want to put up a photo as I didn't NC first.
But having typed it all out I realize adding another random color would be too much. Thank you all for your advice and suggestions

Mustard rug?
Or

Turquoise?

Def not brown... Sounds like you've got brown everywhere

JaneDarcy · 05/01/2020 23:30

It's quite brown alright but I like to think of it as elegant and cosy rather than muddy. It's actually the red sofa that I like less but it came with the house (rental) along with the blinds
