To feel depressed after taking down the Christmas decs

Place looks so bare and empty. Can’t help thinking back to the warm fuzzy feeling of putting them up.

Ah fat fingers, the 25th I mean. Even better.

Cherrysoup · 05/01/2020 17:18

It’s just a job that needs doing, although my dh said he’ll miss the lights going on automatically in the evening.

I think the trick is to keep some (not overtly Christmas) fairy lights up all year. You get the soft, glowy lighting without the clutter.

Any recommendations? I did say we should keep some lights up.

MarshaBradyo · 05/01/2020 17:18

I like putting the Christmas tree up with the presents underneath but prefer taking it down.

And I did notice walking back home at 4pm on Saturday it was lighter which was great.

Palavah · 05/01/2020 17:19

Me too!

I make a point of getting a nice fresh plant or cut flowers (hyacinth bulbs are lovely but they make me sneeze).

And some uplifting scented candles.

But I am also thinking of getting some not-Christmassy fairy lights for the evenings until they lighten up.

Rosebel · 05/01/2020 17:19

Just taken ours down and its so depressing. Could also be down to the I'm back at work tomorrow and the girls are back to school Tuesday. Love Christmas, hate when it's over.

nowaypose · 05/01/2020 17:20

I was glad to have the space back. We get a real tree so I’m also glad not to be cleaning needles up every day.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 05/01/2020 17:21

Ours came down today.
I have to admit my first feeling was gladness that we'd replaced our old artificial tree as the new one hardly dropped any needles. The old one used to coat the room in artificial green bits.
We got the kids to help by bribing them with the remaining candy canes on the tree.
I'm happy with the inside stuff coming down but I miss the outside lights, they made our front garden look very jolly.

MarshaBradyo · 05/01/2020 17:21

Although everyone clears back to school and work bar me and dd so I’d probably be in a different mindset if I was joining them.

MistyCloud · 05/01/2020 17:22

@SerenDippitty

I had to click YABU. Sorry.

I LOVE Christmas, and love putting the decos up, and the 100s of lights outside the house... They go up late November and are switched on 1st December.

But by 29th/30th, I have had enough of the house being cluttered, and dusty. It's quite hard to dust and polish with tinsel and Christmas decorations everywhere!!!

As soon as New Year's day is done, down they all come; lights and all!

It's so shiny and sparkly in my house right now. Clean and tidy and neat, and I love it. Best thing about taking them down, is getting the house back to normal.

dancingthroughthedark · 05/01/2020 17:29

I was really sad to take mine down this year. we have had a few difficult years but this Christmas was the best in a long time so it was harder I think to accept it was all over. I still have candles and fairy lights scattered around. I put strings of micro lights in glass jars around the room and decorate them with different coloured ribbons for the different seasons. I have also left the cosy fair isle fleece blankets and cushions on the sofas. if we get some snow they make the room feel cosy.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 05/01/2020 17:29

I have felt very blue all day.

Have been un-decorating the house for the past few days i go a bit mad with decorating the house but the final bit was the tree today.

I know it's a very Un-MN confession but have felt quite weepy.

We have had the loveliest, loveliest family Christmas but DS went back to Uni today and DD next week. It will probably be the Spring til he is back and I think the passing of time is hitting me-

It will be a long time til we are laying 5 places at the table again and yes-I am proud of raising wonderful, independent DC who are thriving in their lives but I admit to a pang of how very fast it is all going.

And to make matters worse I am doing Dry January so no wine to cheer me up Sad

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 05/01/2020 17:31

Mixed feelings here.

I really enjoy the build up to Christmas and we've all had a lovely couple of weeks off so I'm sad that's come to an end as we're back at school and work from tomorrow. On the other hand, I think it will do us all good to get back to being in a routine and trying to stop toddler DS from pulling the bloody tree over on himself every few minutes has been a pain so at least I don't have to worry about that now.

ParkheadParadise · 05/01/2020 17:35

Our came down last week.
I was glad to get rid of them.
I love cleaning my house when I take the decs down.

TSSDNCOP · 05/01/2020 17:37

But soon it will be Spring and Easter!!!

ifIwerenotanandroid · 05/01/2020 17:37

Our decs didn't take up any room this year (big real floral/ artificial foliage arrangements with pine cones, glitz & lights - but out of the way), so we're going to leave them for a while. They brighten up the house.

I was tempted but couldn't bear to buy a spring bulb bouquet today, so the fresh vase got re-jigged with some coppery alstro & it all looks wintry but not Christmassy.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 05/01/2020 17:40

Normally I am fine taking the decorations down, but this year has been a particularly lovely Christmas and I feel quite sad, I have got some fairy lights up in the hall which I have on all year round which helps, and candles as well but I’m going to get so non Christmassy fairy lights for the mantle as well, I’ve decided life is too short not to have fairy lights all year round.

Fraggot · 05/01/2020 17:40

Put them back up. Have a year long Christmas if you like. Mine won’t come down until end of jan and they went up on 06/11.

PineappleDanish · 05/01/2020 17:43

No, it's AWESOME. Fresh start. New year. Nights finally getting shorter as we head back into spring and the light. Won't be long before we're seeing snowdrops, crocuses and daffodils.

January is amazing.

Daisy62 · 05/01/2020 17:45

Leaving my tree up for a couple more days, then will do January decorations... bulbs, fairy lights, white candles, lots of cosy blankets. Just Christmas without red really!

MoonlightMistletoe · 05/01/2020 17:46

YANBU

But I couldn't wait to put mine back in the box!

MarshaBradyo · 05/01/2020 17:46

The only time of year that hits me a bit is passing the longest day. This part is good though as you notice it get lighter.

B0bbin · 05/01/2020 17:47

I'm totally ready now. Taking it all down tomorrow.

yogo · 05/01/2020 17:50

Mine come down tomorrow, can't take them down until 12 th night but before 13th in this family.

I'm gonna miss the tree. It's beaut.

speakout · 05/01/2020 17:51

I am guessing you are not actually depressed. Just sad.

weegiemum · 05/01/2020 18:00

Ours all came down yesterday but I've kept all the candles this year. So it's clean and relatively spacious but still twinkly and cozy. I like it both when they go up and like it again when they come down!
