To feel depressed after taking down the Christmas decs

Place looks so bare and empty. Can’t help thinking back to the warm fuzzy feeling of putting them up.

Yes ours came down a couple of day ago, for a few mins I thought it looked empty, but I soon got over it.

I feel like it marks the end of the festive period. I had a great time, but it's back to normal when the decorations come down, healthy eating and the gym, you can get too much of a good thing,

However I do have fairy lights throughout the year. I have large plants in the corners of some rooms, like over five foot, and I have fairy lights wrapped round the central trunks, and branches, which are on in the evenings, one friend joked I basically have Xmas trees all year round.🤣

NewPapaGuinea · 05/01/2020 16:23

I think they should be “winter lights” and keep them up right until Spring. Brightens the cold, dark streets up.

SerenDippitty · 05/01/2020 16:23

I did have a lovely Christmas yes. Hope all did. I’ve lit some LED tea lights in non festive holders which has made things a bit cosier.

We’re going to take the tree down tomorrow, and any overtly Christmassy decorations. But I’m keeping all the candleholders out and also a few decorations that are wintery rather than Christmassy. I’m going to buy a ceramic tealight candle village to sit on the window sill for some extra cosiness throughout winter. Have you got a tall vase or a big glass jar/lantern to fill with pine cones and Christmas lights? It can stand where the tree was to add some cheer.

IHateBlueLights · 05/01/2020 16:24

Can't wait to see the back of them.

Aderyn19 · 05/01/2020 16:26

I think the trick is to keep some (not overtly Christmas) fairy lights up all year. You get the soft, glowy lighting without the clutter.

Dailydup · 05/01/2020 16:26

Mine were down by 1st Jan. Cant say I felt too sad about it! Enjoy having all the space back again and if marks the start of a new year and all the exciting things to come (hopefully!) Grin

Pieceofpurplesky · 05/01/2020 16:27

I keep my fairy lights twinkling too. All year.

We took ours down a couple of hours ago and yes I feel very low, I remember the lovely feeling putting them up with mulled wine and Christmas tunes on. It does nt help that I detest my job and feel physically sick at the thought of having to go back to it tomorrow! Planning my escape however as I have something else I am building on, aiming to drop a day each half term so by September to be doing it full time and not my hated job! I am determined not to be feeling like this next Christmas, life is way too short.

Piccalino3 · 05/01/2020 16:27

I've been feeling very sad about this and we just started taking them down today and are currently in the chaotic middle of it.

I actually bought two beautiful micro light twig trees to go in the kitchen and some glitter twigs for a nice vase in the living room. I'm going to put some non Christmassy fairy lights on the mantelpiece to give a bit of glow until the spring.

I let Christmas go reluctantly as it's my favourite time of year but looking out of the window now and it's 4.30 and not dark so lots of things to look forward to. In 7 months I'll start planning Christmas again and next year I AM going to be more organised and please myself more so that I get to enjoy it all
more without being a stressed mess!

Sparklingbrook · 05/01/2020 16:28

@ilovesooty I am glad you said that about the lighter nights, I though it was me imagining things.

Myheadisamess31 · 05/01/2020 16:29

I agree OP i was really sad taking mine down. Christmas has come and gone tooooooo fast 😭

Honeyroar · 05/01/2020 16:29

I always get a nice big bunch of flowers, a couple of candles and then light the fire. I hate this bleak midwinter. It’s worse here as we’ve no street lights!

Myheadisamess31 · 05/01/2020 16:30

I did put mine up 1st week in November though 😬 house looks so naked. I actually started to forget what it was like without the decs

alittleprivacy · 05/01/2020 16:30

I’m always so sad taking them down and gutted to go back to work tomorrow. But once I’m back in the routine of normal life I’ll be fine. Thankfully I have a hobby I absolutely love that I get to practice more in spring/summer so that’s something to cheer me up.

ForestYeti · 05/01/2020 16:31

I was dreading it but actually loving how clean & uncluttered the space looks and bought a new chair to put where Christmas tree was so enjoying the newness of that

RaininSummer · 05/01/2020 16:32

I always feel a bit sad about the loss of lights and colour so try to bring cosiness back as much as possible . It's fine once Feb is done as Spring feels in its way.

Yetanotherwinter · 05/01/2020 16:46

It has the complete opposite effect on me. I love putting them up but always take them down Boxing Day or the day after. I love how clean and tidy the place feels when the tree is down. I also love it when the piles of presents are put away. To me it symbolises the oncoming warmer weather with holidays and trips to look forward to.

BillieEilish · 05/01/2020 16:53

Just took mine down! 3 Kings coming tonight so I left a few fairy lights up.

Sad

Hate taking them down.

maddiemookins16mum · 05/01/2020 17:00

This is exactly why I’m looking forward to £1 bunches of daffs in the supermarkets over the next few weeks. January is such a colourless month.

itwaseverthus · 05/01/2020 17:10

Just took mine down a minute ago, felt rather sad for the first time ever Sad I think as I get older, I feel more sentimental about all the family gatherings and closeness of the season so to mark that ending for the year is kind of hard. I only put them up on the 23rd so maybe next year will buy a tree earlier to enjoy it for longer.

Still, the fire is ablaze and it's still cosy. Pity we're doing dry January or I could have a large red and carry on the festive feeling.

DrivingMsCrazy · 05/01/2020 17:10

Yes I did ours today and have a bare tree sitting waiting for DH to humpf it out of the way. It is bloody depressing to see bare walls after such a lovely lazy time off. I'm lucky that I do have a job I love tho so no Sunday Terrors to add to it.

Also that I'm Scottish and have the ceilidh chaos madness of a fab Burns Night party to look forward to on the 25th! Very kind of our national poet to be born in Jan and give us a reason to keep partying!

BillieEilish · 05/01/2020 17:13

itwaseverthus I am 48, I feel exactly the same as you! I just get more and more sentimental as each year passes.

Also just put up for the 12 days of Christmas and think I may start earlier next year too!

Dry Jan start for me tomorrow Hmm

itwaseverthus · 05/01/2020 17:13

Oh good point @DrivingMsCrazy! We live right next to Burn's cottage and I just realised the celebrations mean dry Jan ends on the 27th by necessity - feel quite cheered now Grin
