This will be solved in a few days but indulge me...

I am a British National but lived in another country years ago. I have been back in the UK for nearly 21 years.

I was a SAHM in the other country but had two casual PT jobs (cash in hand I think?).

The Inland Revenue from the other country have sent a letter for me to my parents address which my mother is forwarding to me.

Why on earth are they writing to me?! Grin

Did you pay into a national insurance type scheme? Hmrc occasionally contact my dh to say he's still on file, I had to contact them recently to check my details still exist. We haven't lived in the UK for 25 years.

MrsBrentford · 05/01/2020 15:17

I am unsure 😂😂

Could you ask her to open and read it first so you know?

MrsBrentford · 05/01/2020 15:25

I don’t want to in case it’s something that might worry her .. like a huge bill Grin

It seems that we have overcharged you a substantial amount of monies and we would like to pay the monies back. But, in order to do this we need to obtain your bank account details so that we can pay the monies directly into your bank account.

Why does the tax man has your permanent abode as out of the country?
Do you have rental income or pension in that country?

TheReluctantCountess · 05/01/2020 15:33

Get it opened and find out.

MrsBrentford · 05/01/2020 15:36

I have no income that I know of from that country.

It’s been sent to my parents address and is in my maiden name which is two marriages ago 😂😂

If you think you may have had casual cash in hand employment (not sure why you wouldn't know) then there is no reason for you to have any kind of tax bill - assuming this is coming from US, Canada, NZ or similar. It could be that your husband/partner at that time now owes you pension credits or similar. OR government agency has discovered an old bank account with $23.79 in it that they want to get back to you (quite legitimately of course - I got something once from Canada years back.)

MrsBrentford · 05/01/2020 15:54

Ooh pension credits from my ex husband would be amazing and would infuriate his new wife Grin

MrsBrentford · 05/01/2020 15:55

I don’t think I closed my bank account actually....

OP posts:
eggandonion · 05/01/2020 16:39

It may be a dormant bank account letter?

MrsBrentford · 05/01/2020 16:42

I can’t remember if I had my own or if I just shared my ex husband’s.

Jellykat · 05/01/2020 16:48

If the other country was the US, i watched a programme recently basically saying a lot of UK residents were getting letters from the US Tax office, apparently once in their system its difficult to get out..
Ignore me if it wasn't the USA!

MrsBrentford · 05/01/2020 16:49

It’s NZ.

OP posts:
sashh · 06/01/2020 05:53

Are you anywhere near pension age? Over 50? You may have credits towards a pension. I know NZ was always ahead on women's rights so you may have the NZ equivalent of NI or stamp for being a SAHP.

JustACog · 10/01/2020 22:33

@MrsBrentford

Well? Did you forget about that hidden bank vault of gold bars?

MrsBrentford · 11/01/2020 15:36

It was a tax return ... $5.88 Grin

GrumpySausage · 11/01/2020 17:04

Oh quids in! Spoil yourself!

eggandonion · 11/01/2020 17:10

You should check out any pension payments you might have, and update your address! You never know what might be on file from ex husband having been taxed as married.

MrsBrentford · 11/01/2020 18:48

I think that I will lose the £3 in the exchange 🤣🤣
